Morphological and phylogenetic characterization of a new microsporidium, Triwangia gracilipes n. sp. From the freshwater shrimp Caridina gracilipes (Decapoda: Atyidae) in China.

A new microsporidian species was described from the freshwater shrimp Caridina gracilipes collected from Lake Luoma located in Northern Jiangsu province, East China. The infected shrimps appeared generally opaque due to the presence of white cysts located in the connective tissues of the surface of the hepatopancreas. The earliest developmental stages observed were diplokaryotic meronts which were in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm. Multinucleate sporogonial plasmodia developed into uninucleate sporoblasts which were enclosed in sporophorous vesicles. The parasite developed synchro

Morphology of the digestive system in carnivorous freshwater dourado Salminus brasiliensis.

The digestive system of teleost shows remarkable functional and morphological diversity. In this study, the digestive tract and accessory organs of dourado Salminus brasiliensis are characterized using anatomical, histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses. The existence of taste buds bordered by microridges in the oesophagus of dourado was recorded for the first time, thus showing that the species drives food intake by either swallowing or rejecting the food item. The Y-shaped stomach of dourado consisted of cardiac, cecal and pyloric regions with tubular gastric glands regi

On a collection of freshwater and estuarine crabs (Crustacea: Brachyura) from Mindanao Island, the Philippines.

The brachyuran fauna of the large southern Philippine island of Mindanao is poorly known, with only a few freshwater and estuarine crab species described or recorded in the last 30 years. Renewed interest in crab biodiversity has led to recent, small-scale surveys (2016-2019) of freshwater and estuarine habitats in various localities in Mindanao, which have yielded a good diversity of brachyuran crabs. As a result, a total of 26 species of brachyuran crab, representing 6 families (Hymenosomatidae, Oziidae, Gecarcinidae, Sesarmidae, Varunidae, and Ocypodidae), are reported here. Of these, 15 sp

The freshwater crab genera Ghatiana Pati Sharma, Gubernatoriana Bott, and Inglethelphusa Bott (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae) revisited, with descriptions of a new genus and eleven new species.

The taxonomy of three morphologically related and endemic genera of the northern Western Ghats (Ghatiana Pati Sharma, 2014, Gubernatoriana Bott, 1970, and Inglethelphusa Bott, 1970) is re-assessed to accommodate several new taxa. We describe a new genus, Sahyadriana gen. nov. and its five new species [S. billyarjani sp. nov., S. pachyphallus sp. nov., S. sahyadriensis sp. nov. (type species), S. tenuiphallus sp. nov., and S. woodmasoni sp. nov.]. Additionally, three new species each of Ghatiana (Gh. botti sp. nov., Gh. pulchra sp. nov., and Gh. rathbunae sp. nov.) and Gubernatoriana (Gu. longi

Estuarization increases functional diversity of demersal fish assemblages in tropical coastal ecosystems.

This study assessed the influence of the seasonal fluctuation of abiotic conditions (wet v. dry season) on the functional diversity (FD) of … the coexistence of species with low functional redundancy in sites subject to seasonal flushing of fresh water. Deeper sites had lower FD than shallower sites, although this difference was less pronounced for region 3, which is strongly affected by its proximity to the São Francisco estuary. The results broadly support the hypothesis that alterations in abio …

Parasitic infection manipulates sodium regulation in the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex (L.).

The acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus induces both physiological and behavioural effects in its intermediate host, Gammarus pulex. The net effect of parasite infection is to increase the likelihood of transmission to the definitive host. Osmoregulation is an energetically expensive mechanism that allows G. pulex to survive in dilute media. Any factor influencing osmoregulation is thus likely to affect the allocation of resources to other areas. This study investigated whether P. minutus infection alters sodium regulation in G. pulex. Haemolymph sodium concentration, water permeabili

Use of numerical models for determination of best sampling locations for monitoring of large lakes.

The implementation of the European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD) that requires all surface waters to achieve at least good status by year 2015 presents a challenge to local authorities responsible for the monitoring programmes. Obtaining a single representative value for each water quality parameter may be extremely difficult to achieve in the case of large lakes, which may be characterised by significant spatial and temporal variation of water quality parameters. The aim of this paper is to present a methodology, which can support the decision making as to the best locations for water

A new nematode species (Seuratoidea, Cucullanidae) parasitizing Parauchenipterus striatulus (Steindachner, 1876) (Pisces, Auchenipteridae) in Brazil.

A new species of a cucullanid nematode is described, illustrated and compared with Cucullanus brevispiculus Moravec, Kohn & Fernandes, 1993 and C. rhamphichthydis Moravec, Kohn & Fernandes, 1997, two species previously reported as parasitizing freshwater fish in South America. The new species is characterized mainly by markedly short spicules, deirids and excretory pore situated posterior to the oesophago-intestinal junction, presence of strongly sclerotized plates in the oesophastome and oesophagus divided into two distinct portions.

PFAS and Precursor Bioaccumulation in Freshwater Recreational Fish: Implications for Fish Advisories.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse class of fluorinated anthropogenic chemicals that include perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA), which are widely used in modern commerce. Many products and environmental samples contain abundant precursors that can degrade into terminal PFAA associated with adverse health effects. Fish consumption is an important dietary exposure source for PFAS that bioaccumulate in food webs. However, little is known about bioaccumulation of PFAA precursors. Here, we identify and quantify PFAS in recreational fish species collected from surface waters across Ne

The first report of selected herbicides and fungicides in water and fish from a highly utilized and polluted freshwater urban impoundment.

Many of South Africa's freshwater impoundments are compromised by pesticide pollution, and the Roodeplaat Dam, near Pretoria, is no exception. This paper is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report of the herbicides Dacthal, metribuzin, simazine, tebuthiuron, terbuthylazine, and the fungicides azoxystrobin, carbendazim, epoxiconazole, metalaxyl (Ridomil), propiconazole, pyrimethanil and thiabendazole in a South African freshwater impoundment. This short note reports on the screening results of water and muscle tissue samples against a comprehensive library of pesticides, herbicides and

Waterborne protozoan pathogens in environmental aquatic biofilms: Implications for water quality assessment strategies.

Biofilms containing pathogenic organisms from the water supply are a potential source of protozoan parasite outbreaks and a significant public health concern. The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the simultaneous and multi-spatial occurrence of waterborne protozoan pathogens (WBPP) in substrate-associated biofilms (SAB) and compare it to surface water (SW) and sediments with bottom water (BW) counterparts using manual filtration and elution from low-volume samples. For scenario purposes, simulated environmental biofilm contamination was created from in-situ grown one-month-old SAB (

Extended persistence of general and cattle-associated fecal indicators in marine and freshwater environment.

Fecal contamination of recreational waters with cattle manure can pose a risk to public health due to the potential presence of various zoonotic pathogens. Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) have a long history of use in the assessment of recreational water quality, but FIB quantification provides no information about pollution sources. Microbial source tracking (MST) markers have been developed in response to a need to identify pollution sources, yet factors that influence their decay in ambient waters are often poorly understood. We investigated the influence of water type (freshwater versus mar

Seasonal variation of antibiotics concentration in the aquatic environment: a case study at Jianghan Plain, central China.

25 antibiotics (macrolides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides) were detected in swine wastewater, river water, rivulet water and in groundwater samples from multi-level monitoring boreholes (with sampling ports, respectively, at 10, 25 and 50 m below the land surface) at Jianghan Plain, central China. Except swine wastewater, the antibiotic concentrations in groundwater, river and rivulet water were higher in spring than those in winter. Nineteen antibiotics were detected at 100% frequencies in all kinds of water samples. In groundwater, fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines were t
