PURPOSE: To report an outbreak of Fusarium keratitis in contact lens (CL) wearers in the northeastern United States.
METHODS: Over a 41-month period, all cases with culture-proven corneal ulceration secondary to Fusarium at 2 tertiary care eye centers were identified through the microbiology departments of each institution, and a retrospective review of charts was performed. During the winter of 2003-2004, dieback symptoms were observed on Pinus radiata and P. pinaster in pine nurseries in Asturias (northern Spain). In a retrospective study performed over 6 years in Brazil, Fusarium solani was found to be the most common species causing mycotic keratitis. The genetic diversity of 44 isolates from 39 patients was assessed by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR (ERIC-PCR) and PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) fingerprinting. ERIC-PCR was more discriminatory than PCR-RFLP for differentiating the strains. By combining of the results of both techniques, we identified 40 genotypes. Molecular typing revealed a high genomic heterogeneity of the strains of F. solani studied.

The individual and combined effects of feeding fumonisin B1 (FB1; 0, 100, 200 mg FB1/kg) and moniliformin (M; 0, 100, 200 mg M/kg) were evaluated using a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement of treatments. Wilted and rotted plants of Vicia faba were received from different localities in the Sudan. Among several Fusarium spp., Fusarium nygamai was recovered. Conspicuous symptoms were among others black root rot, associated with rot and death of the lateral root system. Severely infected plants showed black neck canker at soil level. The fungus Fusarium moniliforme causes fusariosis, which can be invasive and fatal in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of oral Fusarium infection in a granulocytopenic patient with acute myelogenous leukemia who developed necrotic ulceration of the gingiva, extending to the alveolar bone, but was otherwise free of any active systemic lesions. Fusarium moniliforme was identified, by histopathology and culture, to be present in the lesion and was deduced to be the causative organism for this invasive oral infection.

We recently succeeded in eradicating a Fusarium infection by treatment with liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB). The patient, a 22-year-old man with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), developed fever and diffuse cutaneous maculopapular necrotising nodules during post-chemotherapy neutropenia.
