Pedagogical Function of Referees in Youth Sport: Assessment of the Quality of Referee-Player Interactions in Youth Soccer.

We assume that all institutions and individuals involved in the organization of sport for children and young people should utilize the educational potential of sport. We assessed the quality of referee interactions with children during sports competitions in soccer. Based on the developmental theory and research suggesting that interactions between kids and adults are the primary mechanism of their development and learning, we focused on the quality of the referee-player interactions in terms of (1) emotional support, (2) game organization, and (3) instructional support. Twenty-five soccer ref

Impaired decision making under ambiguity but not under risk in individuals with pathological buying-behavioral and psychophysiological evidence.

Pathological buying (PB) is described as dysfunctional buying behavior, associated with harmful consequences. It is discussed whether decision-making deficits are related to PB, because affected individuals often choose the short-term rewarding option of buying despite persistent negative long-term consequences. We investigated 30 patients suffering from PB and 30 matched control participants with two different decision-making tasks: the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) measures decisions under ambiguity and involves emotional feedback processing, whereas the Game of Dice Task (GDT) measures decisions

From Gestalt boundary to psychological border: Perceptual structure constrains strategic planning and intention inference.

Why do humans so often become trapped in protracted conflicts even when peaceful settlement would be mutually beneficial? Across a series of experiments using a temporally extended territorial conflict game, we show that failures of intention inference play a central role in sustaining conflict and that payoff-irrelevant perceptual structure can substantially facilitate settlement. When conflict unfolds in a perceptually unstructured environment, participants' ability to distinguish defensive from offensive actions remains near chance, accompanied by a systematic bias toward inferring hostile

Feasibility and Efficacy of a Virtual Reality Social Prediction Training in Children and Young Adults with Congenital Cerebellar Malformations.

This study tested the feasibility and efficacy of a Virtual Reality (VR) social prediction training (VR-Spirit) specifically designed for patients with congenital cerebellar malformation. The study is a randomised controlled trial in which 28 cerebellar patients aged 7-25 yo were randomly allocated to the VR-Spirit or to a control intervention in VR. The VR-Spirit required participants to compete with different avatars in scenarios that prompted them to form predictions about avatars' intentions. The control intervention consisted of games currently adopted for motor rehabilitation. Social pre

Understanding the psychology of mobile gambling: A behavioural synthesis.

This manuscript reviews the extant literature on key issues related to mobile gambling and considers whether the potential risks of harm emerging from this platform are driven by pre-existing comorbidities or by psychological processes unique to mobile gambling. We propose an account based on associative learning that suggests this form of gambling is likely to show distinctive features compared with other gambling technologies. Smartphones are a rapidly growing platform on which individuals can gamble using specifically designed applications, adapted websites or text messaging. This review co

Robotic March Madness: A Gamified Approach to Enhancing Resident Engagement in Robotic Surgical Simulation.

INTRODUCTION: Modern robotic surgical education typically incorporates simulation-an instructional strategy that provides residents a low-risk environment to learn specific robot skills, receive immediate feedback, and engage in deliberate, metric-guided practice. Despite these benefits, limited trainee engagement is a barrier to robotic simulation achieving its full potential. Gamification, the application of game design principles, has been shown to increase motivation and voluntary practice in medical education, prompting consideration of how it might be deployed to increase engagement with

Neural investigations of a digital-game based intervention for young Learners with mathematical developmental variability.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD), a significant mathematics learning difficulty, remains under-researched in terms of its neural mechanisms and effective interventions. Few studies have examined neural changes after math interventions in young children. This study investigated these changes in thirty-two dyscalculia-at-risk (DR) and non-dyscalculia-at-risk (NDR) children following a digital game-based intervention, focusing on brain activation and network changes using graph theory metrics. NDR children were randomized into intervention and control groups. Results indicated increased activation

Personality impressions predict intergroup trust behaviour of Southern Chinese.

This research aimed to investigate whether the personality impressions Southern Chinese formed on people who were from South China or North China predicted intergroup trust. Study 1 adopted the one-shot trust game to measure intergroup trust, in which the participant decided the amounts of money they would like to invest with the members of the ingroup and the members of the outgroup. After that, they assessed the personality traits of the two groups with a set of trait words. Results suggested that participants invested more average amounts of money with the outgroup than with the ingroup, an

Why are immoral choices more immersive? The effect of moral decision-making on narrative immersion via moral emotions and the moderating role of autonomy - Evidence from Chinese gamers.

Moral choice systems are widely implemented in role-playing games (RPGs) to enhance players' narrative immersion. However, existing research has yielded inconsistent findings regarding whether different types of moral choices (i.e., high-morality vs. low-morality choices) produce different levels of immersion. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the present study incorporates autonomy and moral emotions into a model of narrative immersion and proposes an integrated model that includes both moderation and parallel mediation, examining whether moral choice influences narrative immersion

Brain, emotion and decision making: the paradigmatic example of regret.

Human decisions cannot be explained solely by rational imperatives but are strongly influenced by emotion. Theoretical and behavioral studies provide a sound empirical basis to the impact of the emotion of regret in guiding choice behavior. Recent neuropsychological and neuroimaging data have stressed the fundamental role of the orbitofrontal cortex in mediating the experience of regret. Functional magnetic resonance imaging data indicate that reactivation of activity within the orbitofrontal cortex and amygdala occurring during the phase of choice, when the brain is anticipating possible futu

The Language Games of Pain in Nursing: A Wittgensteinian Analysis of NANDA-I Diagnoses.

Despite technical and regulatory advances in pain assessment, persistent challenges in recognizing, interpreting, and documenting the experience of pain continue to reveal a structural gap in nursing practice. Traditionally, these difficulties have been addressed from biomedical approaches focused on nociception and objective measurement, without questioning the linguistic and normative conditions that shape what counts as pain in clinical contexts. This article argues that the problem is not primarily technical or instrumental, but conceptual and linguistic. Drawing on the philosophy of langu

Gender-related differences in involvement of addiction brain networks in internet gaming disorder: Relationships with craving and emotional regulation.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal interactions among addiction brain networks associated with intoxication, negative affect, and anticipation may have relevance for internet gaming disorder (IGD). Despite prior studies having identified gender-related differences in the neural correlates of IGD, gender-related differences in the involvement of brain networks remain unclear. METHODS: One-hundred-and-nine individuals with IGD (54 males) and 111 with recreational game use (RGU; 58 males) provided resting-state fMRI data. We examined gender-related differences in involvement of addiction brain networks in IGD

To Pause With a Cliffhanger or a Temporary Closure? The Differential Impact of Serial Versus Episodic Narratives on Children's Physical Activity Behaviors.

Research has supported the effectiveness of narratives for promoting health behavior, but different narrative presentation formats (serial vs. episodic) have seldom been compared. Suspense theories suggest that serial narratives, which do not provide a full resolution at the end of an episode, may create higher motivation for continued engagement with a story. Forty-four 8 to 12-year-old children were randomly assigned to watch an animation series designed for an existing active video game in which the plot was delivered either continuously across multiple episodes (serial) or in multiple yet

Neural substrates of male parochial altruism are modulated by testosterone and behavioral strategy.

Parochial altruism refers to ingroup favoritism and outgroup hostility and has recently been linked to testosterone. Here, we investigated the neurobiological mechanism of parochial altruism in male soccer fans playing the ultimatum game (UG) against ingroup and outgroup members (i.e., fans of the favorite or of a rivalling team) using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Our results suggest that individual differences in altruistic tendency influence the tendency for parochialism. While altruistic subjects rejected unfair offers independent of team membership, the more self-oriented 'pro-se
