Gender disparity in access to care across the continuum of chronic kidney disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: 'Gender' as a social construct is increasingly recognized as a determinant of care inequity in chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, a systematic analysis of gender-based disparity in access to care across the continuum of CKD care is lacking. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the global evidence on gender-based disparities in access observed across sequential steps of CKD care. METHODS: The review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251091356) and conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Four databases (PubMed, Cochrane, HINARI, Embase) were searched for publications from 2

HIV and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections in Rhode Island: Trends, Disparities, and Health Equity.

Over the past 10 years, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have seen a significant resurgence in the United States despite the availability of effective treatments and reliable prevention methods. Rhode Island has experienced a similar uptick in the incidence of syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, with many cases occurring among gay, bisexual, men who have sex with men (GBMSM), which coincides with a recent concerning rise in congenital syphilis cases. We reviewed the most recent STI trends for the state of Rhode Island in 2022. During this year, 6,883 cases of STIs were reported to the Dep

The triple burden: achieving sexual and reproductive health equity for young women with albinism in Rwanda.

Young women with albinism in Rwanda face a triple burden of intersecting stigma related to gender, disability, and albinism-specific myths, yet their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs remain largely invisible in research, policy, and practice. Despite Rwanda´s progress toward universal health coverage and disability inclusion, no published studies specifically examine SRH access, outcomes, or barriers among this population. Drawing on intersectionality theory and evidence from separate bodies of literature on gender, disability, and albinism in East Africa, this perspective article ar

Women in interventional neuroradiology: a survey from the European society of neuroradiology (ESNR).

PURPOSE: Interventional neuroradiology remains a male-dominated specialty despite increasing gender parity in medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the professional experiences, workplace environment, and perceived barriers faced by women in interventional neuroradiology across Europe. The primary research question was whether gender disparities persist within the European context and how these findings compare with previously published data from the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) in North America. METHODS: The European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR) conducted a 44-item anonymou

Predicting postoperative chronic opioid use with fair machine learning models integrating multi-modal data sources: a demonstration of ethical machine learning in healthcare.

OBJECTIVE: Building upon our previous work on predicting chronic opioid use using electronic health records (EHR) and wearable data, this study leveraged the Health Equity Across the AI Lifecycle (HEAAL) framework to (a) fine tune the previously built model with genomic data and evaluate model performance in predicting chronic opioid use and (b) apply IBM's AIF360 pre-processing toolkit to mitigate bias related to gender and race and evaluate the model performance using various fairness metrics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants included approximately 271 All of Us Research Program subjects

Exploring the importance of clinical and sociodemographic factors on self-rated health in midlife: A cross-sectional study using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Self-rated health (SRH) is influenced by various factors, including clinical and sociodemographic characteristics. However, in the context of Brazil, we still lack a clear understanding of the relative importance of these factors and how they differ between men and women in midlife. Given the significance of gender equity in health, it is crucial to explore these differences to meet the specific needs of each group. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the importance of clinical and sociodemographic factors of SRH among middle-aged Brazilian adults and analyzes how they vary between men…

Amplified stigma: a conceptual synthesis of embodied intersections of menstruation and homelessness in Western urban contexts.

Menstruation and homelessness are each highly stigmatised experiences, yet their intersection remains critically understudied. This paper introduces the concept of amplified stigma to describe the compounded psychosocial, material and structural harms faced by individuals who menstruate without stable housing in high-income Western cities. Drawing from a conceptual synthesis of over 70 interdisciplinary sources, including public health, feminist theory, medical sociology, anthropology and gender studies, we employ three core analytical frameworks: embodiment, objectification and intersectional

Understanding Onset, Dynamic Transitions, and Associated Inequality Risk Factors for Adverse Posttraumatic Neuropsychiatric Sequelae After Trauma Exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Several gaps remain in the understanding of the onset, dynamic transitions, and associated risk factors of adverse posttraumatic neuropsychiatric sequelae (APNS) in the acute post-trauma window. Based on serial assessments of symptoms from a large cohort study, we identified homogeneous statuses across multiple APNS symptom domains and investigated the dynamic transitions among these statuses during the first 2 months after trauma exposure. Furthermore, we studied how symptom onset and transitions are affected by equity-relevant characteristics. METHODS: The analysis was based on 2

From period poverty to policy change: advancing menstrual health as a public health priority in Nigeria.

Period poverty, the lack of access to menstrual products, adequate sanitation, and reliable health information, continues to undermine the health, dignity, and opportunities of millions of girls and women in Nigeria. Closely linked to gender inequality, the problem is compounded by stigma, inadequate infrastructure, and economic barriers, especially for low-income and marginalized groups. While civil society initiatives and isolated government gestures exist, Nigeria still lacks a comprehensive national menstrual health policy. In contrast, countries such as Scotland, Kenya, and Colombia have

Using person-centred approaches to improve access to comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation.

Cardiac rehabilitation has significant benefits for patients with cardiovascular disease in terms of physical health and psychosocial well-being. Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation programmes comprise graduated exercise, health education, psychological support, advice on preventive medicines, and stress management. However, service provision in the UK is inconsistent. Not all eligible patients are referred to cardiac rehabilitation programmes, and there are inequities in patient access linked to socio-economic status, gender, ethnic background, mental health issues, age and frailty. A person

Influence of sex and gender on depression-related healthcare utilisation following traumatic brain injury sustained during childhood and adolescence: protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is a prevalent mental health condition often occurring after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in both children and adults. Sex, gender and other social determinants of health (SDoH) (e.g., race/ethnicity or socio-economic status) play an important role in depression-related and TBI-related healthcare utilisation (e.g., diagnosis, treatment and management of the conditions). Despite this, no reviews have examined how sex and gender, along with other SDoH, influence depression-related healthcare utilisation among individuals who sustained a TBI ≤19 years of age. The review's
