BACKGROUND: The global dissemination of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella poses a persistent and serious threat to food safety systems. As a leading poultry-exporting country, Thailand requires a comprehensive understanding of how resistance plasmids spread among Salmonella populations within its chicken production chain.
METHODS: Between March 2023 and February 2024, 223 Salmonella isolates were collected from chicken slaughterhouses and markets in northeastern Thailand. From these, 19 representative MDR Salmonella enterica isolates, selected based on distinct spatiotemporal distributions

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is currently recognized not only as a significant nosocomial pathogen but also is an emerging bacterial infection in food-producing animals, posing a critical threat to global health. However, this is a hindrance to detailed bioinformatic studies of MDR A. baumannii of chicken origin due to the lack of its complete genome sequence. Here, we report whole-genome sequencing analysis of MDR A. baumannii Y03 isolated from chickens. The Y03 genome consists of 1 circular chromosome and 4 circular plasmids, The Y03 chromosome harbors 41

Genomic sequencing of several dermatophyte species has revealed that they show small differences in genetic content and genome organization, although each fungus has adapted to specific niches. Thus, it seemed relevant to compare gene expression between species. Here, we examined the transcription modulation of three ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter genes (pdr1, mdr2 and mdr4), which code for membrane transporter proteins in four species of Trichophyton ; T. interdigitale, T. rubrum, T. tonsurans and T. equinum . These fungal species were challenged with sub-lethal doses of griseofulvin,

BACKGROUND: The concerning frequency of K. pneumoniae in various recreational settings, is noteworthy, especially regarding multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains. This superbug is linked to the rapid spread of plasmids carrying these resistance genes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatiotemporal prevalence of MDR-K. pneumoniae in the Kitagata hot spring, Southwestern Uganda.
METHODS: A laboratory-based descriptive longitudinal study was conducted between May and July 2023. During rainy and dry seasons, we collected eighty water samples in the morning and evening from the hot sp

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is associated with a high rate of treatment failure. Since the 9 to 11-month shorter oral regimen in MDR-TB treatment includes pyrazinamide (PZA), it is essential to assess the susceptibility of MDR-TB strains to PZA to guide effective therapy. The susceptibility of PZA is highly affected by drug pressure induced by rifampicin (RIF) and isoniazid (INH) resistant strains. This study examines the association between point mutations in the rpoB, katG, inhA, and pncA genes. Resistant patterns of MDR strains were detected through line probe assay. Phenotypi

β-Galactoside α2, 6-sialyltransferse gene (ST6GAL) family has two members, which encode corresponding enzymes ST6Gal I and ST6Gal II. The present atudy was to investigate whether and how ST6GAL family involved in multidrug resistance (MDR) in human leukemia cell lines and bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMC) of leukemia patients. Real-time PCR showed a high expression level of ST6GAL1 gene in both MDR cells and BMMCs (*P<0.05). Alternation of ST6GAL1 levels had a significant impact on drug-resistant phenotype changing of K562 and K562/ADR cells both in vitro and in vivo. However, no significan

This study aimed to detect the virulent Salmonella serovars (including ESBLs producing) isolated from broiler chickens and humans. Three hundred broilers and sixty human fecal samples were bacteriologically examined. Thirty (10%) and fourteen (23.4%) Salmonella isolates were recovered from broiler and human samples, respectively. The most predominant serovar was S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium. All Salmonella isolates were confirmed by conventional PCR-based invA and ompA genes. Multidrug resistant (MDR) isolates were screened for the detection of adrA and csgD biofilm-associated genes, whic

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a phenomenon through which tumor cells develop resistance against the cytotoxic effects of various structurally and mechanistically unrelated chemotherapeutic agents. The most consistent feature in MDR is overexpression and/or overactivity of ATP-dependent drug efflux transporters. Other mechanisms such as overexpression of drug-detoxifying enzymes and alterations in pro-survival or pro-death signaling pathways are also responsible for MDR. Inflammatory mediators including interleukin-6 (IL-6) play important roles in various events during inflammation and are also

INTRODUCTION: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens are being recognized as a critical threat to human health if they can form biofilm and, in this sense, biofilm-forming MDR-methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and -Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains are a worse concern. Hence, a growing body of documents has introduced antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as a substitute candidate for conventional antimicrobial agents against drug-resistant and biofilm-associated infections. We evaluated melittin's antibacterial and antibiofilm activity alone and/or in combination with gentamicin, ciproflox

The development of bedaquiline holds promise for treating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Still, the inflation in bedaquiline resistance has alarmed the global public health crisis, indicating the need for a new treatment strategy. Several scientific studies have reported a high incidence of resistance among MDR-TB patients who had prior exposure to bedaquiline for treating Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections. Disparate research findings indicate that individuals previously administered this drug exhibit a remarkable prevalence of resistance. Studies have further demonstrated that

We characterized Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi isolates from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Vietnam to investigate their genetic relatedness and antimicrobial resistance. The isolates from Bangladesh and Vietnam were genetically closely related but were distant from those from Indonesia and Taiwan. All but a few isolates from Indonesia and Taiwan were susceptible to all antimicrobials tested. The majority of isolates from Bangladesh and Vietnam were multidrug resistant (MDR) and belonged to the widespread haplotype H58 clone. IncHI1 plasmids were detected in all MDR S. Typhi isolates f

The persistent rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria represents a significant public health challenge, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapeutic options. The slow pace of approval for new anti-tuberculosis (TB) medications underscores the urgent need to identify potential alternative agents. Gallic acid (GA) possesses numerous biological properties, including antibacterial and antiseptic effects. In this study, both standard and MDR strains of M. tuberculosis were utilized to assess the antibacterial efficacy of GA and related mechanisms. GA achieved minimum inhibitory and

A high prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens has been reported in adult and pediatric populations of Pakistan. However, data describing the effect of MDR microbes on the gut microbiota is scarce. We designed a cross-sectional pediatric study to investigate the effect of MDR microbes' infection on the gut microbiome and its resistome of children using high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS). A cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary health care hospital in Peshawar Pakistan, between 5 September 2019 to 15 February 2020. Pediatric patients with acute gastroenteriti

Multi-drug resistance (MDR) transporters are known eponymously for their ability to confer resistance to various antimicrobial drugs. However, it is likely that this is not their primary function and that MDR transporters evolved originally to play additional roles in bacterial physiology. In Listeria monocytogenes a set of MDR transporters was identified to mediate activation of innate immune responses during mammalian cell infection. This phenotype was shown to be dependent on c-di-AMP secretion, but the physiological processes underlying this phenomenon were not completely resolved. Here we

ESBL-producing bacteria are a problem in patients with cancer. The emergence of XDR phenotypes with ESBLs increases mortality. We aimed to evaluate ESBL-producing bacteria, the prevalence of MDR and XDR phenotypes, ESBL genes, and mortality predictors in patients with cancer in the ICU. Different clinical cultures were collected from patients in oncology ICUs. We used the VITEK2 system to identify isolates and assess antibiotic sensitivity, and the combination disk method to detect ESBL phenotypes. β-lactamase, ESBL, and carbapenem genes were detected using PCR. 136 isolates were ESBL-producin

Living in high-endemic regions increases the risk of intestinal colonization by multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales (MDR-Ent). This study investigated Swiss expatriates residing abroad (≥ 3 months) to assess their colonization status upon returning to Switzerland. Selective culture-based methods were implemented to detect third-generation cephalosporins- (3GC-R), carbapenems- (CR), and colistin-resistant (COL-R) strains. Whole-genome sequencing was used to characterize antimicrobial resistance genes, sequence type (ST), and phylogroup of MDR-Ent. Epidemiological data were analyzed using uni-
