Ferrous iron phosphorus in sediments: development of a quantification method through 2,2'-bipyridine extraction.

The role of ferrous iron in the phosphorus cycle of an aquatic ecosystem is poorly understood because of a lack of suitable methods to quantitatively evaluate ferrous iron phosphorus (FIP) phases. Using sediments sampled from Fubao Bay of Dianchi Lake in China, a novel extraction method for FIP using 2,2'-bipyridine was explored. Total phosphorus and iron in the sediments ranged from 1.0 to 5.0 mg/g (dry weight) and 28.5 to 90.6 mg/g, respectively. Organic content (as indicated by loss on ignition or LOI) and iron(II) ranged from 3.1 to 27.0% and 26.5 to 64.9 mg/g, respectively. The dissolutio

Spatial distribution and source apportionment of PCBs in sediments around İzmit industrial complexes, Turkey.

The spatial distribution, degree of pollution and major sources of PCBs were evaluated in surficial sediments within the heavily urbanized and industrialized İzmit Bay and its main freshwater inputs. ΣPCB concentrations range from 2.90 to 85.4ngg(-1) in marine sediments and from ND to 47.7ngg(-1) in freshwater sediments. Results suggest that high concentrations of ΣPCBs were localized around a chlor-alkali plant and an industry that handles bulk liquid, dry and drummed chemicals, and petroleum products in the Bay. Using a chemical mass balance receptor model (CMB), major sources of PCBs in the

Uncertainties in data and models to describe event dynamics of agricultural sediment and phosphorus transfer.

Mathematical models help to quantify agricultural sediment and phosphorus transfers and to simulate mitigation of pollution. This paper develops empirical models of the dominant sediment and phosphorus event dynamics observed at high resolution in a drained and undrained, intensive grassland field-scale lysimeter (1 ha) experiment. The uncertainties in model development and simulation are addressed using Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation. A comparison of suspended solids (SS) and total phosphorus (TP) samples with a limited number of manual repeats indicates larger data variability

A meta-analysis comparing the toxicity of sediments in the laboratory and in situ.

Sediment toxicity tests in the laboratory are an important part of ecological risk assessments, yet how they relate to sediment toxicity in situ has rarely been explored. Using meta-analysis, we examined differences in the toxicity of sediment tested in the laboratory and in situ. Data from four published studies were subjected to rigorous statistical analyses. Overall, the toxicity of sediments in laboratory tests was substantially less than their toxicity in situ. Differences between laboratory and in situ toxicity, expressed using the log odds ratio effect size, varied significantly among p

Mercury in sediments and Nassarius reticulatus (Gastropoda Prosobranchia) in the southern Venice Lagoon.

The southern basin of the Venice Lagoon has been the focus of fewer studies concerning contamination from heavy metals than the northern and central basins. A recent increase in urban waste waters from Chioggia town, as well as dockyards, shipping and fishing activities, affect this part of the lagoon. The aim of this study was to investigate the total mercury (THg) incidence in sediments and Nassarius reticulatus gastropods in order to assess its distribution and evaluate the level of contamination. THg concentration measured in bottom sediments ranged between 0.1 and 3.4 mg/kg d. wt. The enr

Diphyllobothrium: Neolithic parasite?

During paleoparasitological analyses on several Neolithic sites in Switzerland (Arbon-Bleiche 3) and southwestern Germany (Hornstaad-Hörnle I, Torwiesen II, and Seekirch-Stockwiesen), numerous eggs of Diphyllobothrium sp. were recovered. This is one of the earliest occurrences of this parasite during the prehistoric period in the Old World. The prevalence of this helminth in the samples studied raises the question as to how important parasitic diseases were during the Neolithic period and what their actual consequences were.

Sediment and porewater profiles and fluxes of mercury and methylmercury in a small seepage lake in northern Minnesota.

Mercury (HgT) and methylmercury (MeHg) were measured at 1-2 cm resolution in sediment porewater and sediment cores from Spring Lake in the Marcell Experimental Forest of northern Minnesota. Recent sediment accumulation of HgT was 21.4 microg m(-2) yr(-1) (1990-2000), 2 orders of magnitude greater than the accumulation of MeHg (0.20 microg m(-2) yr(-1)). The highest solid phase concentrations of MeHg were observed persistently at the sediment surface and declined sharply with depth. Porewater profiles showed a small diffusive flux of MeHg from sediment to water (5 ng m(-2) month(-1)). Springtim

Hydrogen threshold concentrations in pure cultures of halorespiring bacteria and at a site polluted with chlorinated ethenes.

Halorespiring microorganisms are not only able to oxidize organic electron donors such as formate, acetate, pyruvate and lactate, but also H(2). Because these microorganisms have a high affinity for H(2), this may be the most important electron donor for halorespiration in the environment. We have studied the role of H(2)-threshold concentrations in pure halorespiring cultures and compared them with mixed cultures and field data. We have found H(2)-threshold values between 0.05 and 0.08 nM for Sulfurospirillum halorespirans, S. multivorans and Dehalobacter restrictus under PCE-reducing and nit

The effect of amount of crude oil on extent of its biodegradation in open water- and sandy beach-laboratory simulations.

We examined the biodegradation of varying amounts of artificially weathered Alaskan North Slope crude oil in laboratory microcosm test systems that use natural seawater and simulate spills in open water and on sandy beaches. The model bioremediation treatment consisted of periodic applications of marine bacteria, selected to degrade n-alkanes and a range of aromatic compounds, suspended in a salts solution that supplied inorganic nitrogen and phosphorous. Beach microcosms dosed with low and high oiling lost an average of 22.5% and 11.3% oil weight, respectively. Open-water microcosms dosed wit

Palaeoproteomic investigation of archaeological sediments associated with ochre use in the Middle Stone Age of southern Africa.

The African Middle Stone Age (MSA) represents the cultural and technological context associated with the emergence of Homo sapiens and the development of complex cognition. In this setting, ochre use is considered a multifaceted proxy for modern behaviour, allowing inferences about technical and symbolic aspects of Homo sapiens. Powdered ochre is reported in multiple southern African ethnographic and archaeological contexts alongside various organic materials, some of which are protein-based. Yet, the recovery of proteinaceous residues is rare in the MSA. Since proteins can offer insights into

Dual Nd isotopic archives in fossil teeth reveal bottom-current control of rare-earth element enrichment in deep-sea sediments.

The global emergence of deep-sea sediments enriched in rare-earth elements and yttrium (REY) after the Late Eocene cooling coincides spatiotemporally with Antarctic bottom water (AABW) expansion, yet the underlying mechanism remains unresolved. Here, we present in situ elemental and neodymium isotopic analyses of apatites extracted from Oligocene-Miocene sediments along the North Pacific AABW pathway. Results show ∼90% of the REY budget resides in inner dentin of fossil teeth. The dentin and coexisting authigenic fluorapatites display similar εNd values (∼-5) matching North Pacific seawater, w

Hierarchical physiological sensitivity of the coral, Orbicella faveolata, to suspended sediment and elevated temperature.

Coral reefs are increasingly exposed to multiple environmental stressors, including ocean warming and elevated turbidity from coastal development, dredging, and sediment resuspension. Understanding how these stressors affect coral physiology is essential for improving sediment management and protecting reef ecosystems. We investigated the short-term physiological responses of the Caribbean reef-building coral, Orbicella faveolata, to suspended sediment and elevated temperature during controlled 72-h laboratory experiments. Coral fragments were first exposed in independent chamber-sump systems

[Remineralization and burial of sedimentary organic carbon in filter-feeding bivalve aquaculture areas: Mechanisms and controversies.].

Filter-feeding bivalve aquaculture enhances the transport of particulate organic carbon (POC) to the seafloor through filtration, selective feeding, and biodeposition, thereby altering the sources, fluxes, and reactivity of sedimentary organic carbon (SOC). However, aquaculture-induced organic carbon inputs are characterized by "high input, high reactivity, and high uncertainty". After entering the sediment, a fraction is returned to the water column through microbial remineralization, resuspension, and lateral transport, whereas another fraction is stabilized through rapid burial, mineral pro

Water quality trends in river catchments draining to the Great Barrier Reef: an analysis of ∼40 years of data.

Analysis of water quality trends in river catchments provides critical insights into the influence of climate, landscape/land use change and management drivers thereby informing evidence-based policy interventions. Long-term water quality datasets from nine monitoring sites across the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchment of northeastern Australia were carefully curated and analysed using Generalised Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) to identify both long-term (∼linear) and episodic (non-linear) trends in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and suspended sediment (SS) concentrations. The GAMMs approac

Review of the eco-geomorphological impacts of vessel-generated wakes.

Vessel-generated wakes are an increasingly important source of physical and ecological disturbance in marine and freshwater environments, yet their impacts remain unevenly characterized and even contested across systems. This review synthesizes field, laboratory, and modeling studies to assess how wakes influence sediment resuspension, shoreline erosion, turbidity, nutrient and contaminant fluxes, aquatic habitats, and risks to infrastructure and navigation safety. The framework of this review is designed to help reconcile contrasting conclusions across rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal sy

Deep-sea tailing discharges as a legacy source of trace metals and metalloids in sediments from the Cassidaigne canyon (Mediterranean Sea).

The discharge of deep-sea tailings from the Gardanne alumina plant into the Cassidaigne Canyon (Mediterranean Sea) for nearly five decades generated extensive bauxite residue deposits. This study investigated whether these historical deposits act as a secondary source of dissolved trace metals to bottom waters following the cessation of solid discharge in 2015. Sediment cores collected at five stations in 2016 were analyzed for porewater and overlying-water concentrations of Al, trace elements and early diagenetic tracers (Mn, Fe, DOC). Stations located closest to the discharge area (U03, SR1)

Differential effects of sulfide-induced transformation of biodegradable and conventional microplastics on sedimentary CO2 and CH4 emissions: Underlying microbiome-mediated mechanisms.

The accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in sediments presents serious ecological risks. Although sulfidation is a key aging process in anoxic environments, its impact on sedimentary CO2 and CH4 emissions and underlying microbiome-mediated mechanisms remains unclear, particularly for biodegradable versus conventional MPs. Sediment incubation experiments with pristine and sulfidation-aged polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) revealed distinct carbon-related greenhouse gases patterns driven by material-specific microbial responses. Compared to controls, pristine PLA significantly enhanced

Substrate-driven microbial specialization and cooperative dechlorination of chlorinated pollutants in estuarine ecosystems.

Organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) are globally distributed, yet their ecological roles in marine environments remain poorly understood, with few isolates characterized from these systems. Here, we describe a stable anaerobic consortium from estuarine sediments that performs sustained dechlorination of 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA) to vinyl chloride (VC) at a rate of 126.3 ± 0.9 µM d-1. This activity was associated with the stable co-enrichment of two key populations, Dehalogenimonas and Desulfitobacterium, which increased to dominate the community at 49.7% and 32.5%, respectively. Thallium Isotopes Across the Smithian-Spathian Boundary: Evidence for Anoxia Throughout Most of the Early Triassic.

Following the largest known Phanerozoic extinction, the end-Permian mass extinction, the Early Triassic is often considered an interval of slow biotic recovery. During this time, the minor Smithian-Spathian extinction occurred, further delaying the biotic recovery of this epoch. One mechanism linked to the slow recovery is widespread marine anoxic conditions, but the spatiotemporal changes to anoxia following the mass extinction remain poorly constrained. Here, we utilized local and global redox-sensitive metal proxies to track variations in (de-)oxygenation at Wallenbergfjellet, a section in
