What's new about old drugs.

Every month new clinical trials are published that provide relevant insight into medical care. Health care professionals are expected to review the results of these trials to update their knowledge and clinical practice. Although it is impossible to review every clinical trial, it is important to evaluate study findings in one's area of interest or practice. For nurses and other practitioners in the field of geriatrics, clinical trials involving drug therapy can be particularly valuable. This article is a review of clinical trials published in the past year that provide new information about d

Effects of Dementia on Adverse Outcomes in Geriatric Patients Undergoing Elective Total Hip Arthroplasty: Analysis of the US Nationwide Inpatient Sample.

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) significantly improves the quality of life of patients with end-stage osteoarthritis. Dementia, which is prevalent in geriatric THA recipients, is correlated with several adverse outcomes. This study further investigated the impact of dementia on perioperative outcomes (complications, mortality, skilled nursing facilities [SNFs] transfer, total cost, and length of hospital stay [LOS]) in geriatric patients undergoing elective THA. METHODS: This study retrospectively analysed data from patients aged 65 years and older who underwent elective THA in the N

[Mobile geriatric rehabilitation in functionally severely impaired patients. Investigations on effectiveness].

INTRODUCTION: Mobile geriatric rehabilitation is an outpatient rehabilitative treatment in which a multidisciplinary team treats elderly patients at home. This kind of treatment has been performed in rare cases in Germany but there are no data available on the effectiveness in patients with severe cognitive and functional impairment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a retrospective study design the data of all patients who had participated in mobile geriatric rehabilitation between 1 September 2009 and 23 May 2011 were evaluated. Before treatment a comprehensive geriatric assessment was performed and

Spirituality, culture, and family resilience in Alzheimer's care: A qualitative descriptive study in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease face escalating practical and emotional demands. In collectivist settings, caregiving is also shaped by cultural values and spiritual meaning, yet these dimensions remain underexamined in psychiatric nursing contexts. OBJECTIVE: To describe how spirituality, cultural norms, and personal meaning-making contribute to family resilience among Turkish female caregivers of relatives with Alzheimer's disease, and to outline implications for psychiatric and geriatric nursing practice. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive stu

Health dimensions and sex differences in frailty among nursing home residents: a cross-sectional study in Bilbao, Spain.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterized by increased vulnerability to stressors. Evidence on sex-specific determinants of frailty in cognitively intact nursing home residents remains limited. This study aimed to identify health dimensions associated with frailty in older women and men in nursing homes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 11 nursing homes in Bilbao, Spain. 147 residents aged ≥ 60 years without cognitive impairment were assessed using the Tilburg Frailty Indicator, together with validated measures of functional status, physical performance, emoti

A Family-Focused Delirium Educational Initiative With Practice and Research Implications.

Delirium is burdensome and psychologically distressing for formal and informal caregivers, yet family caregivers often have very little understanding or knowledge about delirium. As part of a large multisite intervention study, the Early Nurse Detection of Delirium Superimposed on Dementia (END-DSD), the authors identified a need for family educational materials. This educational initiative's purpose was to develop a delirium admission brochure for family members to aid in the prevention and earlier identification of delirium during hospitalization. A brochure was developed using an iterative

Effect of a dementia friends information session on health professional students' attitudes and knowledge related to dementia.

Despite the growing prevalence of dementia, few models of training for health professional students on this topic have been formally evaluated or widely disseminated. The Dementia Friends (DF) initiative is part of a global movement to improve the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. The impact of these sessions on the dementia-related knowledge and attitudes of health professional trainees has not been adequately assessed. Health professional students (medicine n = 70, physical therapy n = 30, pharmacy n = 28) participated in one-hour DF information sessions, offered in-person or v

From Warkworth House to the 21st century care homes: progress marked by persistent challenges.

Long-term care homes play an essential role within health and social care. Successful measures to support older people at home for longer have led to increased prevalence of disability, frailty and cognitive impairment in those who live in care homes over the last two decades. The need for care home places is projected to increase for the next two decades. Modern care homes provide care for people who are predominantly over 80, have multiple long-term conditions, take multiple medicines, are physically dependent and live with cognitive impairment. Residents do better when services recognise th

Oral Care in Hospital Settings: Breaking the Vicious Circle of Older Adult Deconditioning.

Hospitalized older adults frequently develop aspiration pneumonia, swallowing dys-function (dysphagia), and sarcopenia. In the current study, we propose a framework that incorporates these three factors into a vicious circle that leads to deconditioning, a condition frequently experienced by this vulnerable population. Viewing aspiration pneumonia, dysphagia, and sarcopenia, along with their interrelationships through the lens of this vicious circle, illuminates the critical role that oral health plays in deconditioning. Moreover, this framework highlights oral care as a key nursing interventi

Implementing Nurse-Facilitated Person-Centered Care Approaches for Patients With Delirium Superimposed on Dementia in the Acute Care Setting.

Little is understood about the use of person-centered care (PCC) for individuals with delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD), especially in the acute care setting. As part of a larger clinical trial, the purpose of the current exploratory study was to describe examples and qualitatively derived themes of nurse-facilitated PCC for hospitalized older adults with dementia and delirium. A total of 750 delirium rounds were analyzed across three diverse acute care sites. Qualitative derived themes of PCC included: (a) Knowing the Patient's Baseline; (b) Knowing the Patient's Interests and Values; (

Analyzing the Effect of Nurse-Led Follow-Up Calls to Reduce Emergency Department Readmissions in Older Adults.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether nurse-led follow-up calls after emergency department (ED) discharge were associated with decreased 30-day ED revisits and hospital admissions among older adults in two geriatric practices. METHOD: The current retrospective quality improvement evaluation was conducted from April 2023 to March 2025. RNs called individuals aged ≥65 years within 5 business days of ED discharge to review instructions, assess symptoms, and support primary care provider (PCP) follow up. Outcomes were 30-day ED revisits and hospital admissions. Logistic regression assessed associations be

Psychiatric assessment of a nursing home population using audiovisual telecommunication.

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that psychiatric assessment of nursing home residents could be reliably carried out remotely via telecommunications. Twenty-seven nursing home residents each had two interviews consisting of the following three rating scales: the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). The interviews were conducted by three trained psychiatrists, each of whom interviewed two-thirds of the subjects. Subjects were sequentially assigned to have either two in-person interviews (in-person

[Cost-benefit analysis of a new treatment concept in patients with indwelling catheters].

An earlier and a new treatment concept for patients equipped with long-term indwelling bladder catheters were compared with regard to cost, expenditure of time, and equipment in a retrospective study involving 58 patients treated by the earlier concept and 60 treated by the new one. The new concept dispensed with the need for bladder irrigation and routine replacement of the indwelling catheters. Under the earlier concept, 18 indwelling catheter replacements and 53 bladder irrigations were required per patient and year during the years 1979/80. This compares with 6 indwelling catheter replacem
