OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to estimate the lifetime prevalence of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) in adolescents aged 16 to 17 years.
DESIGN: Population-based epidemiologic study.
SUBJECTS: Eighteen thousand three hundred sixty-four males and 9673 females aged 16 to 17 years screened for induction into the Israel Defense Force.
RESULTS: Of the 28,037 individuals screened, 12 met diagnostic criteria for GTS. The point prevalence in this population was 4.3 +/- 1.2 (mean +/- SE) per 10,000. The 95% confidence interval for this estimate is 1.9 to 6.7 per 10,000. The point pre

The Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) may measure arousal and attention, and is affected by various dopaminergic disorders. We recorded CNVs in 12 patients fulfilling diagnostic criteria of Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS). Ten of 12 patients were male, 10 had attention deficit disorder (ADD), and 3 also had obsessions and compulsions (OCD). Medication had been stopped or TS treatment not yet started. TS patients had higher CNV amplitude and more frequent postimperative negative variation than controls. CNV2 was enhanced in all TS patients, while CNV1 was attenuated in TS patients with AD

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) has been increasingly studied neurophysiologically as well as clinically. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD) have been recognized to be part of the continuum of TS. We recorded brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and long-latency auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) in 20 patients with TS, 10 of whom had ADD and 6 OCD. TS patients with and without OCD and ADD did not differ in BAEP latencies, and no differences were found from normal controls. AEP latencies did not differ between TS patients and controls. TS

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome, a familial neurologic disorder with onset in early life, is characterized by chronic intermittent motor and vocal tics. Many of the orofacial tics and compulsive behaviors seen in this disorder may cause destructive oral lesions. The medications used in treating the syndrome may adversely interact with dental therapeutic agents, frequently cause hyposalivation associated with the development of dental caries and periodontal disease, and may produce tardive dyskinesia with buccolingual choreiform movements. The oral signs and symptoms associated with the syndro

Two cases of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome from India are presented. The symptomatology of Tourette syndrome is the same as that documented in western populations which suggests biological factors in the aetiology of the syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Our study was conducted to characterize sensory phenomena experienced by Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) sufferers. Specific foci of the study were premonitory urges associated with motor and phonic tics, site sensitization, and disinhibition behaviors.
METHOD: Twenty-eight subjects were recruited for participation in the study from the Tourette's Syndrome Association and from neurologists' patient lists. All had been diagnosed as having TS at least 2 years prior to the study. Patients were contacted by telephone and questioned in an attempt to screen for participants who ex

A 29-year old patient with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome exhibited severe compulsive self-mutilation and hostility leading to long-term hospitalisation. A history of refractory self-mutilation increases the risk for suicidal acts, which represent a rare complication in the course of the Tourette disorder.

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) is a genetic disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and attention-deficit disorder. Family studies support the presence of an autosomal dominant gene; however, to date, an assignment for the GTS locus has not been made. We present the case of a boy with GTS and a deletion of the terminal portion of the short arm of chromosome 9, del(9)(qter----p2304:).

One hundred and fourteen patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome have been reviewed. Sixty-three were managed using sulpiride, and worthwhile beneficial effects occurred in 59%. Our experience with sulpiride compared to other drug treatments is discussed. The main adverse side effects of sulpiride treatment were sustained drowsiness and, possibly, depression. Tardive dyskinesia was not reported in our cohort.

Eight children with the syndrome of Gilles de la Tourette underwent a neuropsychological assessment. The results were compared with those of eight children with proven lesions of the right cerebral hemisphere and with eight children with learning disabilities without neurological disturbances. Our findings do not support organicity or dysfunctions of the right hemisphere in children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

We report a patient in whom Tourette's syndrome (TS) and Type I schizophrenia coincided, and suggest, based on clinical features and pharmacological responses, that both conditions in this patient could have a common pathophysiological basis.

A 36 year-old female patient with schizophrenia and Tourette syndrome is described. Clinical course, present neurological and psychopathological state, results of psychological testing, computed tomography and MR tomography of the skull, EEG and evoked potentials are reported. Results of neurochemical analysis of CSF and plasma are presented. Possible relationships between Tourette syndrome and schizophrenia are discussed with particular reference to neurochemical findings.

Ninety patients with the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome were studied. A high incidence of depression, hostility, and obsessionality was found. Depression was not related to administered medication, while aggression, hostility, and obsessionality were significantly associated with some important features of the syndrome, namely copro- and echo-phenomena and a family history of tics or the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. Links between psychopathology and neurological and electroencephalographic abnormalities were minimal.

Twenty-three patients with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) underwent noninvasive investigation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, as did 23 age-matched controls. ANS function in GTS patients was no different from that of controls, and patients receiving neuroleptic drugs had the same ANS function as untreated patients. All 23 patients later received clonidine and were retested. The ANS values before administration of clonidine were compared with those while patients were taking clonidine. The only significant change (p less than 0.01) with clonidine was a reduced resting pulse

An occurrence of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome in a 13-year-old Saudi female patient is documented, and treatment is described. It is thought that the improvement noted may be attributed to the hospital environment and reduced contact with the family.

Preliminary studies with PET-scanner and nuclear magnetic resonnance have shown no abnormalities in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. Estimation of homovanillic acid, the main metabolic of dopamine, in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Gilles de la Tourette disease suggests that brain dopaminergic receptors are hypersensitive. Such an hypersensitivity of dopamine receptors is in agreement with the clinical improvement of patients treated with neuroleptic drugs. The study with PET-scanner presented here suggests the existence of a neuronal hypofunction in some striatal and corticolimbic ar

Two pairs of monozygotic twins with tic hyperkinesis are described. One pair manifested a clinical picture of generalized tic (Gilles de la Tourette's disease), the other generalized and local tic. These observations may point to an involvement of hereditary factors in the genesis of generalized tic and to the similarity of the pathogenetic mechanisms of local and generalized tics.

The families of 250 consecutive, unselected patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) were analyzed. If the parents had either motor or vocal tics, but not both, there was an increased risk of both TS and tics in the offspring. The mode of inheritance of the combined tic-Tourette trait was evaluated in both nuclear families and extended pedigrees. Complex segregation analysis was carried out allowing for possible contributions from both a major autosomal locus and multifactorial inheritance of variation in the background of each genotype. The most likely mode of inheritance was a major semidominant
