A xenogeneic collagen matrix recently has been suggested as an alternative to connective tissue graft for the treatment of gingival recession. The matrix avoids the second surgical site, and as a consequence could decrease surgical morbidity. The goal of this report is to present a novel treatment strategy for mucogingival defects. The use of platelet concentrate gel in a collagen sponge carrier, combined with a coronally positioned flap procedure, is presented in two cases. Complete root coverage was achieved in both cases. Optimal esthetic results, with excellent soft tissue contour and texture, were observed. The patients were satisfied with the appearance. This technique warrants further investigation.

A connective tissue graft technique described by Langer and Langer for treating gingival recession was attempted in 22 clinical cases using connective tissue above. 100% root coverage was obtained where only 3 mm of recession existed, 94% when recession was 3 to 5 mm and 58% root coverage occurred where recession was greater than 6 mm. This technique was compared with the classical technique of free gingival grafts and the connective tissue graft technique for covering exposed root surfaces proposed by Nelson.
