Association of dental health parameters with oral lesion prevalence in human immunodeficency virus-infected Romanian children.

PURPOSE: This study assessed the association of caries, plaque accumulation, gingival health, and antiretroviral therapy (AT) with oral lesion prevalence in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected Romanian children. METHODS: A convenience sample of HIV-infected children who received dental care in 2 hospitals were evaluated for oral lesions, caries (dfs+DFS/total teeth present), plaque (PI, Silness and Löe), and gingival indices (GI, Löe and Silness). Oral lesions were grouped as: (1) extraoral herpetic infections; (2) parotid gland swelling; (3) oral ulcerative lesions; and (4) fungal in

Oral ulcer in SARS-CoV-2 infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) at the end of 2019 caused the global pandemic. Oral and dermatological manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) such as xerostomia, aphthous-like lesions, ulcers, tongue depapillation, necrotizing gingivitis, and taste disorders, including the loss of taste and salivary gland infections are being reported. This study aims to describe a case of oral ulcers following COVID-19 infection. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 95-year-old male patient hospitalized in follow-up care and rehab

Erythema multiforme and epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma in the oral cavity of dogs: 1989 to 2009.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical signs, major laboratory findings, diagnostic procedures and outcome in dogs with erythema multiforme or epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma of the oral cavity. METHODS: Retrospective analysis identified 14 client-owned dogs with erythema multiforme or epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma of the oral cavity. Histological changes were combined with immunohistochemistry and clonality testing data in selected cases, and a clinical follow-up was acquired. RESULTS: Ulcerative stomatitis with no significant or only minor abnormalities on haematology and serum biochemistr

Is there a role for antibiotics in periodontal treatment?

UNLABELLED: Plaque-induced inflammatory periodontal disease affects a significant number of the population, and raises the question as to why antibiotics are not universally used to treat a disease in which bacteria are the main aetiological agent. This article describes the reasons why antibiotics may not be effective in treating periodontitis, and why their use is not more widespread. However, antibiotics have been shown to be helpful in periodontal treatment in some cases, and evidence for this is presented and suggestions where their use may be indicated are made. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: To r

[Clinical aspects and etiology of prosthesis-induced changes in the oral mucosa].

The clinical picture and the aetiology of prosthesis-induced alterations of the oral mucosa are presented. In the light of personal gerontological observations, the authors deal with the mechanical irritation produced by the prosthesis as the main aetiological factor and discuss its effects on prophylaxis, diagnosis and therapy.

The clinical spectrum of desquamative gingivitis.

Desquamative gingivitis is a fairly common complaint. Typically seen in females who are middle-aged or older, it is predominantly a manifestation of a range of vesiculobullous disorders. The main complaint is of persistent soreness of the gingiva. Most cases are related to lichen planus or pemphigoid, but it is also important to exclude pemphigus, dermatitis herpetiformis, linear IgA disease, chronic ulcerative stomatitis, and other conditions. Biopsy is invariably required to confirm the diagnosis after a full history, general, and oral examination. Apart from improving the oral hygiene, immu

Use of differential reinforcement to treat medical non-compliance in a paediatric patient with leukocyte adhesion deficiency.

Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency (LAD) is a rare immuno-deficiency disorder which results in chronic infections, such as gingivitis, necrotic skin infections and gastrointestinal ulcers. This case describes an 18-year-old male who was non-compliant during an inpatient hospitalization with several aspects of his complex medical regimen, particularly his wound care, physical therapy and use of his crutches. The patient's dressing change protocol was task analysed in order to create a structured, predictable routine by having the subject complete small, discrete steps. A differential reinforcement p

Covid-19 and oral diseases: Crosstalk, synergy or association?

The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) is a viral infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that clinically affects multiple organs of the human body. Cells in the oral cavity express viral entry receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 that allows viral replication and may cause tissue inflammation and destruction. Recent studies have reported that Covid-19 patients present oral manifestations with multiple clinical aspects. In this review, we aim to summarise main signs and symptoms of Covid-19 in the oral cavity, its possible association with oral dis

Tp63 in oral development, neoplasia, and autoimmunity.

The Tp63 gene encodes for multiple isoforms of the p63 transcription factor, a member of the p53 family of proteins. Much like its more famous sibling, the biological role of p63 is quite complex, with wide-ranging effects on development, differentiation, and cellular lineage choices. The crucial function of p63 is epitomized by the striking phenotype of p63 knockout mice. These animals have a profound block in the development of stratified epithelia and aplasia of multiple ectodermal appendages, as well as orofacial clefting and limb defects. Remarkably, a similar spectrum of phenotypic alter

Treatment approaches to common symptomatic oral lesions in children.

A variety of oral mucosal lesions can be symptomatic in children. This article describes the classic clinical appearance of the most common oral diseases and provides treatment recommendations that are tailored to the pediatric age group. When possible, more than one drug alternative is given for each of the different oral conditions for an improved success rate. It is essential for the clinician to understand that this article should be used as a guide for managing oral and perioral lesions in children and adolescents. Specific dosages and formularies of drugs may require modification in the

[Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS): a new disease entity with specific immunological marker (SES-ANA)].

A review of recently described cases with oral chronic erosive or ulcerative lesions associated with stratified epithelium specific antinuclear antibodies (SES-ANA) is presented. The lesions are refractory to local and systemic corticosteroids but may be responsive to hydroxychloroquine.

Oral manifestations in 100 Zimbabwean HIV/AIDS patients referred to a specialist centre.

OBJECTIVE: To document the prevalence, age, sex ratio and clinical features of oral lesions associated with HIV/AIDS among patients referred to the two largest specialist centres in Zimbabwe. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: University Hospital. SUBJECTS: 100 consecutive patients with oral manifestations of HIV/AIDS were interviewed and examined by Dental Surgeons and Physicians. METHODS: Inspection and palpation of head and neck was done in all cases. Examination of the oral cavity and oropharynx with torchlight and wooden spatula was performed and lesions recorded according to WHO rec

Using immunofluorescence in the diagnosis of chronic ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa.

Chronic ulcerative diseases of the oral mucosa are commonly seen in clinical practice. On clinical and histological appearance, the lesions may be hard to differentiate from each other. The establishment of definite diagnosis is essential because the patient may require different management and have widely varying prognosis. Immunofluorescence studies aid greatly in the process of determining the diagnosis of a number of chronic ulcerative diseases. This article reviews these chronic ulcerative diseases, describing their clinical, microscopic, and immunofluorescence characteristics. Methods of
