Serum biomarkers have potential to help predict prognosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between serum acylcarnitine levels and functional outcomes at 1 month/6 months after injury for TBI patients with intracranial hemorrhage or diffuse axonal injury. This study is a multi-center prospective cohort study in which adult TBI patients with intracranial injury visiting the emergency departments (EDs) from December 2018 to June 2020 were enrolled. Serum acylcarnitine levels at the time of ED arrival were categorized into four groups: lo

BACKGROUND: In patients with severe brain injury, withdrawal of life-sustaining measures (WLSM) is common in intensive care units (ICU). WLSM constitutes a dilemma: instituting WLSM too early could result in death despite the possibility of an acceptable functional outcome, whereas delaying WLSM could unnecessarily burden patients, families, clinicians, and hospital resources. We aimed to describe the occurrence and timing of WLSM, and factors associated with timing of WLSM in European ICUs in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
METHODS: The CENTER-TBI Study is a prospective multi-cen

METHODS: In this prospective cohort study of 149 sTBI patients, we determined the relationship between serum calprotectin levels and 90-day overall survival plus poor outcome (Glasgow outcome scale score of 1-3) after sTBI, and analyzed its associations with Rotterdam computerized tomography (CT) scores, Glasgow coma scale (GCS) scores and two markers of inflammatory reaction including serum C-reac…

We describe a case of giant cell glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) that presented with a non-traumatic acute subdural haematoma (NASDH). A 57-year-old male had a sudden onset headache and rapid deterioration in conscious level with Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 5 and dilated unreactive left pupil. CT of the head revealed a left acute subdural haematoma with mass effect and a left parietal lesion. Our literature review revealed that glioblastoma presenting as an acute subdural haematoma is extremely unusual. To our knowledge, we report the second case. We propose an invasion of the arachnoid and cort…

CT scan reveals traumatic intracranial abnormalities in fewer than 10% of patients following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Management policy in these patients is not clear. Clinical or radiological deterioration occurs in 10-20% of this risk group, usually within 24 hours and often without neurosurgical consequences. Patients with mTBI and subarachnoid blood or small foci of contusion do not need to be admitted to medium/high care or to the ICU. This is warranted in patients fulfilling the following criteria: age > 65 years; a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score < 15; anticoagulant use; or mu…

This case report reveals the implementation of sensorimotor adaptation and learning process for rehabilitation in a patient with traumatic brain injury to achieve optimum recovery which is permanent in nature in compliance to the disability rating scale. A twenty two year old gentleman who had a history of fall was diagnosed as having subarachnoid hemorrhage along with diffuse axonal injury of the brain and bilateral lung contusion with pneumothorax. He underwent a total of ten months of sensorimotor adaptation and learning process for rehabilitation, which achieved functional mobility with a

Ranolazine is a new anti-anginal medication that was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006 for patients with symptomatic chronic angina despite optimized therapy. This paper presents a case report of a fifteen year old male patient admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit after ranolazine overdose ingestion. He had recurrent new onset seizures that are most likely due to ranolazine overdose. Seizures have never been reported with ranolazine use or abuse.
