Endemic goitre in adult females, cretinism, and anthropometry in children were examined in a goitrous area of Bangladesh. An area survey showed total goitre varying from 62.0 to 93.0%, visible goitre from 9.0 to 54.8% between areas. The prevalence of endemic cretinism was measured in a village belonging to the Bwa ethnic group in Mali liable to iodine deficiency and suffering from endemic goitre. In this village according to mental and motor handicaps found in cretinism, we used two psychometric tests: the Raven's Progressive Matrice (PM 47) and a "peg test". Using the fiduciary inference method on the two tests associated with a clinical and qualitative approach, we obtained a prevalence of myxedematous cretinism close to 1.2%.

In a survey of 3841 rural dwellers in Chinamora, Zimbabwe, goitre was found in 29%. There was associated moderate iodine deficiency, and 8 people out of a subgroup of 229 had biochemical myxoedema; 2 others had biochemical thyrotoxicosis. Thyrotropin levels were not raised in 100 children aged less than one year. There did not seem to be a role for goitrogens in the pathogenesis of the goitres. A nationwide iodinisation programme should be introduced in Zimbabwe.

In order to assess neonatal thyroid function in the endemic goitre areas of Greece, T4 and TSH have been measured. Previous studies had shown that in these endemic areas, adults had low T4 but normal TSH values, probably because of an increase in the serum T3 level. In this study, T4 and TSH were measured in dried blood spots from 259 neonates.
