Grief and Economic Stressors by Sex, Gender, and Education: Associations With Alzheimer Disease-Related Outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The prevalence and impact of stressful life events (SLEs) on age-related and Alzheimer disease (AD)-related pathways may depend on social determinants including gender and education. We investigated whether specific SLEs are associated with AD pathology and neurodegeneration and how these associations differ by gender and education. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included cognitively unimpaired participants, most with a family history of sporadic AD, from the ALzheimer's and FAmilies (ALFA) cohort, based in Barcelona, Spain. Participants had available assessmen

Resilience as a mediator between empathy and professional grief among nurses in high-mortality services.

BACKGROUND: Nurses working in high-mortality clinical services, such as intensive care, oncology, and palliative care units, frequently witness patient deaths. This repeated exposure places them at a high risk of bereavement reactions; however, limited research has explored how individual emotional traits, particularly empathy and resilience, shape this experience. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of resilience in the relationship between empathy and bereavement reactions-both short-term emotional reactions and long-term cumulative effects-among nurses working in high-

Virtual Mourning in a Collectivist Culture: A Hermeneutic Phenomenology of Filipino Grief and Continuing Bonds on Facebook.

This study is among the first to examine Filipino digital mourning through a theory-driven hermeneutic phenomenological lens, illuminating grief as a culturally grounded and relationally embedded experience. It investigates how bereaved Filipinos utilize Facebook to ritualize grief and sustain enduring bonds with the deceased. Anchored in Continuing Bonds Theory and enriched by Narrative Identity, Relational Models, and Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Theories, the analysis focuses on grief expressions manifested in the digital platform. Ten anonymized interviews were reanalyzed through interpr

Experiences of child abuse and prolonged grief in adulthood - results from a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, various risk factors for the development of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) have been discussed. While it is well established that child abuse increases the risk of various mental disorders in later life, the relationship between child abuse, including its subtypes, and PGD is barely examined. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of child abuse and distinct abuse patterns on PGD symptoms in a population-based German sample. METHODS: We used self-reported data from 911 individuals (54.3 ± 17.9 years, 59.2% women) who had experienced the loss of

A Walk With Grief: A Personal Narrative of Coping With the Death of a Same Sex Partner in Late Life.

Grief is a complex and multifaceted process. While there is no reason to think that the grieving process would be dissimilar if an LGBTQ+ individual loses a partner than the grief of a heterosexual individual, they often receive and perceive less practical and emotional support, empathy and are treated unequally legally post loss. To date no studies have investigated whether this experience (disenfranchised loss) more likely leads to prolonged grief disorder or other mental health sequelae. This article describes aspects of disenfranchised grief, loneliness, and artificial intelligence for emo

Psychometric Properties of the Korean Version of the Revised Prolonged Grief Disorder Scale for Bereaved Adults.

This study aims to validate the Korean version of the Revised Prolonged Grief Disorder scale (PG-13-R-K) by exploring the psychometric properties of the revised Prolonged Grief Disorder scale in bereaved South Korean adults. A total of 694 bereaved individuals who had experienced the loss of a close person for a duration ranging from 12 to 24 months were included in this study and randomly divided into two separate datasets to conduct factor analyses. The results of both EFA and CFA revealed a single-factor structure for the PG-13-R-K. Moreover, the results of reliability and validity tests sh

Parents' descriptions of labouring with an antepartum fetal death: Findings from the Birthing in Grief study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence to guide intrapartum care when an unborn baby has died is limited. AIMS: To explore parents' experiences of care during labour of an antepartum stillbirth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 18 bereaved parents from across Australia. Content analysis was conducted. FINDINGS: Two broad themes were identified: 'explaining every step' and 'helping us feel like parents.' Sub-themes under the first broad theme, 'explaining every step', were 'how and when information was given' and 'what happens next.' 'Like any other parent', 'feeling the pain' and 'every

Interpretative Phenomenology of Grief following Reproductive Loss: A Narrative Review and Considerations on Improving Support.

The loss of pregnancy through miscarriage or stillbirth is typically an unexpected and highly distressing event for parents. While death in any form may be overwhelming to those bereaved, pregnancy and newborn loss are unique in several ways because they involve the added loss of parental identity and the idealized baby and family. In this study, the authors performed a narrative review of the literature regarding the phenomenon of grief following reproductive loss in bereaved parents, focusing on heteronormative mothers and fathers and on nontraditional families. One of the main highlighted a

A qualitative study of early career Australian midwives' encounters with perinatal grief, loss and trauma.

PROBLEM: The health of women is dependent on midwifery workforce stability. Retaining new midwives is paramount, however without support, the early career can be a vulnerable time for midwives. BACKGROUND: Midwives care for women who experience poor perinatal outcomes like stillbirth and neonatal death. Midwifery care in these sentinel events is complex. There is limited understanding of early career midwives' experiences within these encounters. AIM: To understand the experiences of Australian early career midwives' clinical encounters with perinatal grief, loss and trauma. METHODS: A qual

Uncovering Prolonged Grief Reactions Subsequent to a Reproductive Loss: Implications for the Primary Care Provider.

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of clinical guidelines for the routine assessment of maladaptive reproductive grief reactions in outpatient primary care and OB-GYN settings in the United States. Because of the disenfranchised nature of perinatal grief reactions, many clinicians may be apt to miss or dismiss a grief reaction that was not identified in the perinatal period. A significant number of those experiencing a reproductive loss exhibit signs of anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Reproductive losses are typically screened for and recorded numerically as part of a wom

Unravelling the grief of involuntary pregnancy loss: A meta-ethnography of midwives' and nurses' emotional experiences.

BACKGROUND: Parents who experience involuntary pregnancy loss encounter nurses and midwives when requiring care. But the environment in which this attention is provided turns it into a stressful and challenging event that favours the concealment of emotions. Literature supports the development of compassion in nurses and midwives who tend to parents who experience pregnancy losses. AIM: To synthesise the emotional experiences of midwives and nurses when caring for parents who have suffered an involuntary pregnancy loss. METHOD: This is a synthesis of qualitative studies following Noblit and

Distinctiveness of symptoms of prolonged grief, depression, and post-traumatic stress in bereaved children and adolescents.

Studies among adults have shown that symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) are distinct from those of bereavement-related depression and post-traumatic stress-disorder (PTSD). This study was an attempt to replicate this finding in two distinct samples of bereaved children (N = 197; aged 8-12 years) and adolescents (N = 135; 13-18 years), confronted with the death of a parent, sibling or other close relative. Using confirmatory factor analyses, we compared the fit of a one-factor model with the fit of a three-factor model in which symptoms formed three distinct, correlated factors. In both

Similarities and differences in couples' grief reactions following a miscarriage: results from a longitudinal study.

Recent studies have documented grief and depressive reactions in women after a miscarriage. However, the men's reactions to their partner's experience have been neglected. In a controlled follow-up study, 56 couples were studied shortly after the miscarriage, and 6 (N = 47) and 12 months later (N = 45). The participants completed standardized questionnaires for depression, physical complaints, anxiety, and grief. Contrary to commonly held beliefs, men do grieve, but less intensely and enduringly than their partners. The manner in which they experience their grief is similar to that of the wome

Embodied Grief in the Shadow of Violence: An Integrative Conceptual Review of Widowhood, Trauma, and Social Constraint.

Violent widowhood remains among the least theorized forms of bereavement. While dominant Western psychological models have advanced grief theory, they do not adequately explain grief following intentional spousal loss amid violence, ongoing threat, and gendered social regulation. This integrative conceptual review synthesizes interdisciplinary and cross-cultural scholarship on violent widowhood, traumatic bereavement, embodiment, structural violence, and social constraint to develop a context-sensitive framework for grief after intentional spousal loss. Four interrelated dimensions are identif

Nurses' Experiences of Grief Care for Terminally Ill Cancer Patients and Their Families: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Grief care is a vital yet emotionally demanding component of end-of-life nursing for patients with terminal cancer, with significant implications for family and community well-being. In Jordanian private hospitals, cultural sensitivities surrounding death and limited formal grief-care education may challenge nurses' ability to support patients and families effectively, with implications for sustainable healthcare practice. PURPOSE: This study explored nurses' experiences of grief care work with dying patients and their families from a community health nursing perspective in a Jord
