Impact of COVID-19 on Ethnically Minoritised Carers in UK's Care Home Settings: a Systematic Scoping Review.

COVID-19 has impacted disproportionately two groups in the UK: healthcare workers and people from ethnically minoritised groups. However, there is a lack of evidence on how COVID-19 affected ethnically minoritised carers in care homes. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the available evidence regarding the impact of COVID-19 on ethnically minoritised carers in UK. The relevant records were systematically searched in Cochrane COVID-19 Study Register and WHO COVID-19 global literature. A total of 3164 records were retrieved. Following duplicate elimination and abstract, title, and ful

Indoor exposure to perchloroethylene (PCE) in individuals living with dry-cleaning workers.

Perchloroethylene (PCE) is the most widely used solvent in dry-cleaning; it is toxic to the liver, kidney and central nervous system and may be a human carcinogen. PCE levels in the ambient air of dry-cleaners' homes were measured, and samples of end-exhaled air (alveolar air) from subjects who were not themselves occupationally exposed, but who were members of the household of dry-cleaners were compared with samples from the general population. Thirty apartments were visited housing dry-cleaners and their families, and located well away from the dry-cleaning premises. Indoor air samples and a

Does proactive care in care homes improve survival? A quality improvement project.

BACKGROUND: NHS England's 'Enhanced Health in Care Homes' specification aims to make the healthcare of care home residents more proactive. Primary care networks (PCNs) are contracted to provide this, but approaches vary widely: challenges include frailty identification, multidisciplinary team (MDT) capability/capacity and how the process is structured and delivered. AIM: To determine whether a proactive healthcare model could improve healthcare outcomes for care home residents. DESIGN AND SETTING: Quality improvement project involving 429 residents in 40 care homes in a non-randomised crosso

What's on the menu? A qualitative study on the views of care home staff and residents on nutritional practices and implications for oral health.

INTRODUCTION: People living in nursing or residential homes are at an increased risk of having or developing oral and dental diseases. This is due to contributing factors such as comorbidities and polypharmacy coupled with poor manual dexterity and lack of disease prevention and access to care. These risk factors combined with frequent and high sugar consumption increases risk of developing dental decay. Care home residents are a diverse population from different backgrounds. Little is known about decision making around nutrition in care settings and nutritional practices of older people in ca

One-year concurrent training improves physical performance and handgrip strength in nursing home residents.

This parallel two-arm pragmatic controlled trial aimed to examine the effectiveness of a 12-month exercise intervention on physical performance, handgrip strength, independence in basic activities of daily living (BADL), and falls in real-world settings. Ninety-five older residents of nursing homes (mean age 81.9 ± 8.0 years) were allocated to either an exercise (n = 43) or usual care only (n = 52) group. The 12-month exercise training consisted of resistance and aerobic exercises (2 days/week), while the usual care consisted of everyday routine and standard care. The primary endpoint was the

The effect of social isolation on the cognitive ability of the oldest old in Chinese nursing homes in post-COVID-19: a moderated chain mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Both pre-or post-COVID-19, older adults residing in nursing homes are at significant risk for social isolation, which is negatively associated with cognitive ability. Currently, the elderly aged 80 years and older are the fastest-growing age group globally. The extent of social isolation within this group post-COVID-19 and its impact on cognitive abilities remain inadequately explored. OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to evaluate the prevalence of social isolation among the oldest old in Chinese nursing homes post-COVID-19 and to investigate the mediating and moderating roles of bas

Motivated by identity: A social identity analysis of why people become foster carers.

Understanding why individuals are motivated to take on new identities, particularly why people choose to become foster carers, is critical to addressing persistent shortages in foster care systems. Despite policy consensus that foster care is the preferred alternative when children cannot remain with birth families, shortages persist across many countries. Research has traditionally emphasised individualistic motivations, such as altruism, neglecting broader social and identity-based factors. This study applies a Social Identity Approach, drawing on the Social Identity Model of Identity Change

Barriers, challenges, and facilitators in oral health care for older adults in home-based care: stakeholder perspectives from germany.

BACKGROUND: With the growing number of people requiring long-term care in Germany, not only is the prevalence of chronic diseases increasing, but oral health is also deteriorating. Many older adults with functional impairments who live at home can no longer maintain their oral hygiene independently and therefore rely on caregivers. Consequently, the quality of oral care often depends these caregivers. However, as oral health care in the outpatient setting involves multiple stakeholders - including dentists, dental assistants, general practitioners, professional and family caregivers- the fragm

Development of a casemix classification to predict costs of home care in the Netherlands: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Compared with fee-for-service systems, prospective payment based on casemix classification is thought to promote more efficient, needs-based care provision. We aim to develop a casemix classification to predict the costs of home care in the Netherlands. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The research is designed as a multicentre, cross-sectional cohort study using quantitative methods to identify the relative cost predictors of home care and combine these into a casemix classification, based on individual episodes of care. The dependent variable in the analyses is the cost of home care utili

Co-Occurrence of and Recovery from Substance Abuse and Lifespan Victimization: A Qualitative Study of Female Residents in Trauma-Informed Sober Living Homes.

Despite the co-occurrence of substance use disorders (SUDs) and domestic and/or sexual violence (DSV) in the lives of women, there remains a dearth of research on how and why these phenomena intersect as well as the role that trauma-informed sober living homes (SLHs) may play in promoting recovery. Following a detailed description of a unique trauma-informed SLH (Support, Education, Empowerment, and Directions [SEEDs]), we present findings from a qualitative study that documented the perceptions and lived experiences of 28 female current or former residents of a trauma-informed SLH; all women
