MRI Protocol for Pituitary Assessment in Children with Growth or Puberty Disorders-Is Gadolinium Contrast Administration Actually Needed?

The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of non-contrast pituitary MRI in children with growth or puberty disorders (GPDs) and to determine the criteria indicating the necessity to perform post-contrast examination. A retrospective study included re-analysis of 567 contrast-enhanced pituitary MRIs of children treated in a tertiary reference center. Two sets of sequences were created from each MRI examination: Set 1, including common sequences without contrast administration, and Set 2, which included common pre- and post-contrast sequences (conventional MRI examination). The di

Investigating the causal effect of fibroblast growth factor 23 on osteoporosis and cardiometabolic disorders: A Mendelian randomization study.

Pathological excess of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) causes mineral and bone disorders. However, the causality of FGF23 in the development of osteoporosis remains unknown. Whether FGF23 has systemic effects on cardiometabolic disorders beyond regulating mineral metabolism is also controversial. In this study, we investigated the causal effect of FGF23 on osteoporosis and cardiometabolic disorders using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Summary statistics for single-nucleotide polymorphisms with traits of interest were obtained from the relevant genome-wide association studies. As a

Prenatal growth restriction, retinal dystrophy, diabetes insipidus and white matter disease: expanding the spectrum of PRPS1-related disorders.

PRPS1 codes for the enzyme phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate synthetase-1 (PRS-1). The spectrum of PRPS1-related disorders associated with reduced activity includes Arts syndrome, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease-5 (CMTX5) and X-linked non-syndromic sensorineural deafness (DFN2). We describe a novel phenotype associated with decreased PRS-1 function in two affected male siblings. Using whole exome and Sanger sequencing techniques, we identified a novel missense mutation in PRPS1. The clinical phenotype in our patients is characterized by high prenatal maternal α-fetoprotein, intrauterine growth restrict

Somatomedin-1 (recombinant insulin-like growth factor-1): clinical pharmacology and potential treatment of endocrine and metabolic disorders.

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) is a polypeptide of 70 amino acids. The circulatory form of IGF-1 is synthesised in the liver. The metabolic activity of IGF-1 is regulated by 6 IGF-binding proteins (BPs), the most important being IGFBP-3. IGF-1 acts via its own receptor, which resembles that of insulin. It has been demonstrated that the effects of growth hormone (GH) on protein metabolism, including growth and the effect on nerve tissue versus trophic effects, are mediated by IGF-1, whereas these 2 hormones are antagonistic in their effects on insulin and some aspects of lipid metabolism. Connective tissue growth factor gene expression in tissue sections from localized scleroderma, keloid, and other fibrotic skin disorders.

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a novel peptide that exhibits platelet-derived growth factor-like activities and is produced by skin fibroblasts after activation with transforming growth factor-beta. Coordinate expression of transforming growth factor-beta followed by CTGF during wound repair suggests a cascade process for control of tissue regeneration. We recently reported a significant correlation between CTGF mRNA expression and histologic sclerosis in systemic sclerosis. To confirm the relation between CTGF and skin fibrosis, we investigated CTGF gene expression in tissue expres

Radioimmunoassay for somatomedin C: comparison with radioreceptor assay in patients with growth-hormone disorders, hypothyroidism, and renal failure.

We raised an antiserum (Tr4) in rabbits against a basic somatomedin C-like peptide preparation. Using high-immunoreactivity somatomedin C tracer, we compared the performance of radioimmunoassays in which we used the Tr4 antiserum and a well-characterized somatomedin C antiserum distributed by the National Pituitary Agency (NPA) with that of the human placental-membrane somatomedin radioreceptor assay (RRA). In their cross reactivity toward various somatomedin-like and unrelated peptides, the two radioimmunoassay methods were almost identical, although NPA antiserum, with about fourfold higher

The role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in major depressive disorder: an update meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of profound sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness, as well as a marked loss of interest or pleasure in almost all activities. Evidence indicates that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is essential for neuronal survival, angiogenesis, and synaptic connectivity, and is also involved in stress resilience and antidepressant mechanisms, offering new perspectives on the pathophysiology of MDD. Although several studies have examined the relationship between peripheral VEGF lev

Maternal endothelial damage as a disorder shared by early preeclampsia, late preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction.

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia (PE) and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) are separate disease entities that have frequently been reported as sharing the same pathogenesis. In both of them, angiogenesis disorders and generalized endothelial damage with an accompanying inflammation are the dominant symptoms. In this study, we attempted to prove that both these processes demonstrate the same profile in early PE, late PE and IUGR patients, while the only difference is in the degree of exacerbation of the lesions. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 167 patients divided into four groups, three o

The role of rumination in posttraumatic stress disorder and posttraumatic growth among adolescents after the wenchuan earthquake.

Three hundred and seventy-six middle school students in Wenchuan County were assessed three and one-half years after the Wenchuan earthquake to examine the effects of rumination on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG). The results revealed that recent intrusive ruminations partly mediated the relationship between intrusive rumination soon after the earthquake with PTSD but not with PTG. Recent deliberate rumination partly mediated the relationship between intrusive rumination soon after the earthquake and PTG but not PTSD. Moreover, recent deliberate rumination a

Effects of the brain-derived neurotrophic growth factor val66met variation on hippocampus morphology in bipolar disorder.

Histological and behavioral research in bipolar disorder (BD) implicates structural abnormalities in the hippocampus. Brain-derived neurotrophic growth factor (BDNF) protein is associated with hippocampal development and plasticity, and in mood disorder pathophysiology. We tested the hypotheses that both the BDNF val66met polymorphism and BD diagnosis are associated with decreased hippocampus volume, and that individuals with BD who carry the met allele have the smallest hippocampus volumes compared to individuals without BD and val/val homozygotes. We further explored localization of morpholo

Foot growth disorder after surgery of lower limb malignant bone tumor in a pediatric series.

BAKGROUND: Child malignant bone tumors often develop near growth cartilage. The gold standard surgery consists in large segmental resection. This resection often requires the sacrifice of growth cartilage, leading to inequality of limb length. Prothesis are used for reconstruction when the epiphysis is resected, otherwise different strategies of osteosyntheses and grafts may be an option. HYPOTHESIS: The aim of the study was to analyze the foot size inequality after surgery of lower limb malignant bone tumor in patients with growth residual.
