Growth factors in skin wound healing.

The healing of skin involves a wide range of cellular, molecular, physiological and biochemical events. During the healing process, cells migrate to wound sites where they proliferate and synthesize extracellular matrix components in order to reconstitute a tissue closely similar to the original one. This activity is regulated by mediators secreted from the wound border cells such as PDGF, EGF, TGF beta and many other cytokines. Their effects on cells has been demonstrated in vivo and in vitro. The aim of this article is to summarize the sequential events that occur during wound healing notabl

Pathogenesis of psoriasis.

The information summarized in this article supports the "framework hypothesis." The details of cells of the immune system in the pathogenesis are covered elsewhere in this issue. We believe the observations reported herein allow the following conclusions. The entire epidermis of any individual with the psoriatic phenotype has the capacity to express overt clinical disease. Control of expression is linked to a complex interaction of cells of the epidermis, cells of the dermis, cells of the immune system, and possibly other noncellular humoral elements. The keratinocytes of psoriatic patients ar

Postharvest-applied agrochemicals and their residues in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Many agrochemicals are applied postharvest on fruits and vegetables to extend their lives and preserve quality during storage, transport, and marketing. Persistence and distribution of residues on the edible portions of produce have been reported for citrus fruits, pome fruits, stone fruits, mangos, strawberries, bananas, kiwi fruits, avocados, some minor fruit commodities, and bell peppers and tomatoes. Data on the persistance and residues of the fungicides benomyl, biphenyl, sec-butylamine, captan, carbendazim, dicloran, fosetyl-aluminum, guazatine, imazalli, iprodione, metalaxyl, o-phenylph

Bacteriocins and other bioactive substances of probiotic lactobacilli as biological weapons against Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

In the search of new antimicrobial agents against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacteriocins-producing probiotic lactobacilli deserve special attention. The inhibitory effects of biosubstances such as organic acids, hydrogen peroxide and each bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance (BLIS) L23 and L60 on the growth of different gonococcal strains were investigated. Different non-treated and treated cell-free supernatants of two probiotic lactobacilli containing these metabolites were used. The aims of this work were (i) to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the biosubstances produced by two prob

Neurotrophins and tonsillar hypertrophy in children with obstructive sleep apnea.

Enlarged adenotonsillar tissue (AT) is a major determinant of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity in children; however, mechanisms of AT proliferation are poorly understood. We hypothesized that early exposure to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) may modify AT proliferation through up-regulation of nerve growth factor (NGF)-neurokinin 1 (NK1) receptor dependent pathways. AT harvested from 34 children with OSA and 25 children with recurrent tonsillitis (RI) were examined for mRNA expression of multiple growth factors and their receptors. In addition, NK1 receptor expression and location, and

Neurotrophin-induced preprotachykinin-A gene promoter modulation in organotypic rat spinal cord culture.

To study regulation of the preprotachykinin-A gene promoter, we utilised a biolistic gene transfer protocol to deliver a DNA construct that incorporates a portion of the preprotachykinin-A gene promoter and an enhanced green fluorescent protein reporter gene into neonatal rat spinal cord organotypic slices. The ability of the neurokinin-1 receptor agonist [Sar9,Met(O2)11]-substance P, nerve growth factor and brain derived neurotrophic factor to modulate positively preprotachykinin-A gene promoter construct activity, as indicated by de novo enhanced green fluorescent protein expression, was det

Effects of pesticides and toxic substances on behavioral and morphological reproductive development: endocrine versus nonendocrine mechanisms.

Exposure to toxic substances or pesticides during critical perinatal developmental periods can alter reproductive and central nervous system (CNS) function in a manner that does not compromise the growth and viability of the fetus but causes functional alterations that become apparent later in life. While some "CNS/behavioral teratogens" are mutagenic or alter cell division, other chemicals produce alterations of CNS development via endocrine-mediated mechanisms. The following discussion will focus on studies conducted primarily in our laboratory that describe how pesticides and toxic substanc

ProcCluster® and procaine hydrochloride inhibit the growth of Aspergillus species and exert antimicrobial properties during coinfection with influenza A viruses and A. fumigatus in vitro.

INTRODUCTION: Influenza-associated pulmonary aspergillosis is associated with high mortality rates and limited treatment options. The current standard practice involves treating each pathogen separately. However, the use of antifungal drugs can lead to serious side effects, and the presence of triazole-resistant Aspergillus strains can complicate antifungal therapy. In addition, drug-resistant influenza viruses are becoming an increasing concern in clinics. A drug that affects fungal and viral propagation could overcome these disadvantages. Thus, we conducted a study to examine the antifungal

Explaining the Association Between Fetal Growth and Childhood ADHD Symptoms: Cross-cohort Replication.

The association between restricted fetal growth and symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in childhood is well-replicated and robust. However, fetal growth is determined by many prenatal factors and associations with mental health may be confounded by familial and social context. In this study, we sought to quantify the relative contributions of prenatal factors and familial confounds to the association between fetal growth and ADHD symptoms. Two independent cohorts were analyzed, the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (ABCD; United States) and the Growing Up in

Recurrent growth of lipomas after previous treatment with phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate.

Injections with phosphatidylcholine- and deoxycholate-containing substances are used to reduce localized fat accumulations. Recent studies have suggested that this procedure may be a non-surgical alternative for reducing the size of lipomas. However, only short-term data about efficacy are available, and it is unclear whether a permanent reduction in lipoma size is possible. In the present case we report a patient who presented with recurrent growth lipomas that were previously successfully treated using phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate.

[Pterygium: allergic etiology?].

Pterygium is a wedge-shaped fibrovascular growth of conjunctiva that extends onto the cornea. The etiopathogenesis of pterygium is still not fully elucidated. Exposure to ultraviolet light is suggested as one of the most important factors contributing to pterygium development. However, other factors including allergens, harmful chemical substances, wind, dust and pollens also may contribute to its development. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of immune reactions on the pathogenesis of pterygium.

Fetal anomalies and long-term effects associated with substance abuse in pregnancy: a literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Substance abuse in pregnancy remains a major public health problem. Fetal teratogenicity results from the effect of these substances during fetal development, particularly when used in combination. This review will focus on and attempt to clarify the existing literature regarding the association of substance abuse on the development of congenital anomalies and the long-term implications in exposed offspring. METHODS: Systematic review of available English literature using the PubMed database of all peer-reviewed articles on the subject. RESULTS: A total of 128 articles were inclu

Decreased bone mineral density in prepubertal children with sickle cell disease: correlation with growth parameters, degree of siderosis and secretion of growth factors.

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) frequently have bone disorders of multifactorial aetiology. We attempted to analyse the relationships between bone mineral density (BMD) on the one hand and auxologic parameters, degree of siderosis, function of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I)/IGF-binding protein 3 (IGFBP3) axis, and calcium-phosphate balance in 28 prepubertal children with SCD and 15 age-matched children with constitutional short stature (CSS). Children with SCD had significantly decreased BMD (77.9 +/- 11.9 per cent of normal BMD for age and sex) and circul

Biological mechanisms of environmentally induced causes of IUGR.

The causes of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) are multiple, involving many different factors. Studies in humans and animals have shown that the maternal environment is the most important determinant of newborn weight, accounting for more similarity in birth weights of siblings than does genetic affinity. In addition to a direct relationship with the degree of maternal plasma volume expansion, many clinical factors are associated with IUGR. These factors include multiple gestation; fetal, genetic, and chromosomal anomalies (Down's syndrome and Turner's syndrome); infections such as TORCH

Pathophysiology, cellular and molecular mechanisms of foetal growth retardation.

In mammals, size at birth is the outcome of length of gestation and rate of foetal growth. In the absence of premature delivery, foetal size within species is determined principally by foetal growth rate which is dependent on both genetic and epigenetic factors. Failure of either of these mechanisms leads to foetal growth retardation. In mammals, including human infants, foetal growth retardation can occur naturally or pathologically. One major cause for natural foetal growth retardation or runting is the increase in litter size. In many cases, however, the cause of runting is unknown. Parenta

Brief exposure of neonatal testis cells to EGF or GDNF alters the regenerated tissue.

UNLABELLED: We have previously shown that implantation of testis cell aggregates under the back skin of immunodeficient mice results in de novo regeneration of testis tissue. We used this unique model to investigate the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) on testis cord development. Neonatal piglet testis cells were briefly (<1 h) exposed to either low (L: 0.02 μg/mL) or high (H: 2 μg/mL) doses of EGF, GDNF, or vehicle (control), before implantation in recipient mice. Randomly selected implants were removed from each mouse at 1, 2, 4, and

[New drugs with positive effects on bones].

The paper concerns the nontraditional treatment of osteoporosis using endogenous substances regulating bone metabolism, and also new drugs. NO in high concentrations decreases the activity of osteoclasts, scavenges superoxides which destroy connective tissue, and activates 1 alpha-hydroxylase in kidneys. Bone metabolism is effectively influenced by donors of NO or by modulators of NO synthase. Osteoclastic function is also inhibited by vitamin K. The administration of the vitamin is indicated in osteoporotic patients with proven vitamin K deficiency. Antiestrogens (tamoxifen), ipriflavon and a
