How does interoceptive exposure for panic disorder work? An uncontrolled case study.

To examine the influence of interoceptive exposure (IE) when used alone in the treatment of Panic Disorder (PD), 17 PD patients were presented with six IE sessions, using 35% CO2 as the exposure medium. The data indicate that IE alone is effective in reducing panic, panic-related fears, and general anxiety. However, the positive effects of IE do not appear to extend to agoraphobia, related fears, or depressed mood. Two distinct within-session patterns of fear response to IE were noted, one indicating habituation and the other indicating a lack of fear reduction. Although both patterns were ass

Anatomical segregation of different adaptative processes within the vestibulocerebellum of the cat.

Bilateral surgical lesions of the flocculus or the nodulo-uvular lobes were performed in the cat. Effects of these lesions on optokinetic and optokinetic afternystagmus OKAN), vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), visual suppression, and adaptation and habituation of VOR were studied using an identical experimental protocol. After flocculectomy, all these functions were impaired, except for habituation. Long-term postoperative recordings only revealed a recovery of the suppression of VOR, suggesting a limited contribution of the flocculus to this function. After nodulo-uvulectomy, only habituation an

Cerebral asymmetry in autonomic conditioning to facial expressions: sex differences.

In the present experiment, sex differences in hemispheric asymmetry during classical conditioning to emotional stimuli are reported. 125 subjects (62 females and 63 males) were shown a slide of a happy face in the right (or left) visual half field (VHF), and simultaneously a slide of an angry face in the left (or right) VHF. Eight groups were formed by the combination of male and female subjects; left and right VHF positions of the angry/happy faces; and the administration/omission of the shock unconditioned stimulus (UCS). Dependent measures were skin conductance responses recorded from both

Skin conductance habituation in panic disorder patients.

Skin conductance habituation was compared between 38 patients meeting DSM-III criteria for Panic Disorder and 29 normal controls. Approximately half of each group was randomly assigned to be given 100 dB SPL tones and the other half 75 dB tones. All indices pointed to slowed habituation in patients compared with normals: number of trials to response habituation, total number of responses, and slope of decline of skin conductance level. Patient-normal differences were not significantly larger for 100 dB than for 75 dB. In addition, patients compared with normals had more nonspecific fluctuation

Effects of varying marijuana smoking profile on deposition of tar and absorption of CO and delta-9-THC.

We investigated the effects of previously observed differences in smoking technique for marijuana (M) versus tobacco (T) on the amount of inhaled tar, the percentage retention of inhaled tar in the lung, the pre- to postcigarette boost in blood carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and in serum delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC concentrations), and psychophysiologic responses to THC (increased heart rate and subjective "high"). Ten healthy, habitual smokers of M were studied on 6 separate days. On each day, subjects smoked a single M cigarette (approximately 900 mg, 1.24% delta-9-THC) using one of 6 differ

The behavioural consequences of dystrophinopathy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a severe neuromuscular disorder, caused by mutations in the DMD gene. Normally, the DMD gene gives rise to many dystrophin isoforms, of which multiple are expressed in the brain. The location of the mutation determines the number of dystrophin isoforms affected, and the absence thereof leads to behavioral and cognitive impairments. Even though behavioral studies have thoroughly investigated the effects of the loss of Dp427, and to a lesser extent of Dp140, in mice, direct comparisons between models lacking multiple dystrophin isoforms are sparse. Furthermore, a b

Stable individual differences in habituation and sensitization to prolonged painful stimulation are underpinned by activity in the hippocampus, amygdala, and sensorimotor cortices.

Acute pain serves to warn an organism of potential damage. Two plausible theoretical response scenarios for prolonged painful stimulation could be hypothesised: If the organism does not sense potential harm an individual may habituate. Whereas, if harm is possible, pain sensitization may be more probable. Examining how an individual adapts to prolonged stimulation will provide unique insight into the mechanisms underlying pain habituation and sensitisation and, potentially, a valuable perspective on the development of chronic pain. However, currently little is known about the stability of thes

Preventive treatment with CGRP monoclonal antibodies restores brain stem habituation deficits and excitability to painful stimuli in migraine: results from a prospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Calcitonin gene-related peptide ligand/receptor (CGRP) antibodies effectively reduce headache frequency in migraine. It is understood that they act peripherally, which raises the question whether treatment merely interferes with the last stage of headache generation or, alternatively, causes secondary adaptations in the central nervous system and might thus possess disease modifying potential. This study addresses this question by investigating the nociceptive blink reflex (nBR), which is closely tied to central disease activity, before and after treatment with CGRP an

Individual predictors of the susceptibility for motion-related sickness: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Individuals seem to be differently susceptible to motion-related sickness (motion sickness, visually induced sickness etc.). Investigations of the reasons for these different susceptibilities have revealed many potential factors that could predict individual susceptibility to motion-related sickness. OBJECTIVE: This paper attempts to conduct a comprehensive literature review on inter-individual predictors of susceptibility to motion-related sickness using systematic approaches. METHODS: After a systematic literature research, titles and abstracts of 1778 publications were screene

Is the hierarchy necessary? Gradual versus variable exposure intensity in the treatment of unacceptable obsessional thoughts.

Although research suggests that introducing varying levels of fear during exposure enhances outcomes for some anxiety-related problems, this has not been examined in the context of obsessions. The current preliminary study tested the hypothesis that introducing variability in exposure intensity would improve long-term outcomes relative to traditional gradual (hierarchical) exposure METHODS: Adults (N = 40) with a moderately distressing unacceptable obsessional thought were randomly assigned in parallel to four twice-weekly sessions of: (a) gradual exposure (EXP-G; n = 19) emphasizing hierarchi

Blast Exposure Impairs Sensory Gating: Evidence from Measures of Acoustic Startle and Auditory Event-Related Potentials.

Many military service members and veterans who have been exposed to high-intensity blast waves experience traumatic brain injury (TBI), resulting in chronic auditory deficits despite normal hearing sensitivity. The current study sought to examine the neurological cause of this chronic dysfunction by testing the hypothesis that blast exposure leads to impaired filtering of sensory information at brainstem and early cortical levels. Groups of blast-exposed and non-blast-exposed participants completed self-report measures of auditory and neurobehavioral status, auditory perceptual tasks involving

Sexually dimorphic deficits of prepulse inhibition in patients with major depressive disorder and their relationship to symptoms: A large single ethnicity study.

BACKGROUND: Sensorimotor gating deficits as measured by prepulse inhibition (PPI) of acoustic startle reflex have been repeatedly observed in patients with schizophrenia. However, studies investigating PPI in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) are scarce, and this issue remains to be elucidated. METHODS: Subjects were 221 patients with MDD and 250 age-matched healthy comparison subjects. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the 21-item version of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D21), and the scores were divided into six factors. Thirty-five trials of startle reflex to pul

Stronger hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis habituation predicts lesser sensitization of inflammatory response to repeated acute stress exposures in healthy young adults.

Effective adjustment of the stress systems to repeated stress is regarded as an adaptive response of the organism facing environmental threats. Given the intertwined relationship between the stress systems and the inflammatory system, it could be expected that inflammatory processes should adapt to repeated stress as well. However, only little is known about adaptational processes of the different components of the immune system in response to repeated stress, and how these might be related to adaptational processes of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. We here examined N=22 health

Post-stress rumination predicts HPA axis responses to repeated acute stress.

Failure of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to habituate to repeated stress exposure is related with adverse health outcomes, but our knowledge of predictors of non-habituation is limited. Rumination, defined as repetitive and unwanted past-centered negative thinking, is related with exaggerated HPA axis stress responses and poor health outcomes. The aim of this study was to test whether post-stress rumination was related with non-habituation of cortisol to repeated stress exposure. Twenty-seven participants (n=13 females) were exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) twice

Visual evoked potentials in interictal migraine: no confirmation of abnormal habituation.

OBJECTIVE: We intended to study the effect of check size on visual evoked potential habituation in interictal migraine, using the faster 3 per second reversal rate and an improved analytic procedure with block-number blinding. BACKGROUND: Habituation in migraineurs has been extensively studied with visual evoked potentials. Despite discrepant results, possibly related to the use of different stimulus conditions, lack of habituation in the period between attacks is presently considered to be a neurophysiological hallmark of migraine. METHODS: Midoccipital monocular visual evoked potentials we

Effects of voluntary wheel running on heart rate, body temperature, and locomotor activity in response to acute and repeated stressor exposures in rats.

Stress often negatively impacts physical and mental health but it has been suggested that voluntary physical activity may benefit health by reducing some of the effects of stress. The present experiments tested whether voluntary exercise can reduce heart rate, core body temperature and locomotor activity responses to acute (novelty or loud noise) or repeated stress (loud noise). After 6 weeks of running-wheel access, rats exposed to a novel environment had reduced heart rate, core body temperature, and locomotor activity responses compared to rats housed under sedentary conditions. In contrast

Pyruvate and creatine prevent oxidative stress and behavioral alterations caused by phenylalanine administration into hippocampus of rats.

Phenylketonuria is characterized by a variable degree of mental retardation and other neurological features whose mechanisms are not fully understood. In the present study we investigated the effect of intrahippocampal administration of phenylalanine, isolated or associated with pyruvate or creatine, on rat behavior and on oxidative stress. Sixty-day-old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: saline; phenylalanine; pyruvate; creatine; phenylalanine + pyruvate; phenylalanine + creatine. Phenylalanine was administered bilaterally in the hippocampus one hour before training; pyruva

Fear and disgust processing during repeated exposure to threat-relevant stimuli in spider phobia.

Although disgust plays a significant role in the etiology of spider phobia, there remains a paucity of research examining the role of disgust in the treatment of spider phobia. Spider fearful participants (N = 46) were randomly assigned to a disgust (view vomit images) or neutral activation (view inanimate objects) condition. They were then repeatedly exposed to a videotaped tarantula, during which time their fear, disgust, and physiological levels were assessed repeatedly. Growth curve analyses indicated that repeated exposure led to significant declines in fear and disgust with no statistica

Interoceptive fear conditioning as a learning model of panic disorder: an experimental evaluation using 20% CO(2)-enriched air in a non-clinical sample.

Despite the role afforded interoceptive fear conditioning in etiologic accounts of panic disorder, there are no good experimental demonstrations of such learning in humans. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the interoceptive conditioning account using 20% carbon dioxide (CO(2))-enriched air as an interoceptive conditioned stimulus (CS) (i.e., physiologically inert 5-s exposures) and unconditioned stimulus (US) (i.e., physiologically prepotent 15-s exposures). Healthy participants (N=42) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a CS-only, contingent CS-US pairings, or unpai

Habituation of single CO2 laser-evoked responses during interictal phase of migraine.

A reduced habituation of averaged laser-evoked potential (LEP) amplitudes was previously found in migraine patients. The aim of the present study was to assess the habituation of single LEP responses and pain sensation during the interictal phase in migraine patients. Fourteen migraine patients were compared with ten control subjects. The pain stimulus was laser pulses, generated by CO2 laser, delivered to right supraorbital zone. Patients were evaluated during attack-free conditions. The LEP habituation was studied by measuring the changes of LEP amplitudes across and within three consecutive
