The experiences and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young carers: practice implications and planning for future health emergencies.

BACKGROUND: Young carers are children or young people aged up to 25 years old who undertake unpaid caring responsibilities for a friend or family member. Young carers faced significant challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. We explored the impact of the pandemic and associated restrictions on mental health, wellbeing and access to support in young carers in the United Kingdom (UK) to understand how to improve services, as well as support this population in future health emergencies. METHOD: We conducted 22 qualitative semi-structured interviews from May to November 2021 with 14 young

Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices in Africa: exploring the effects on public health and sustainable development plans.

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices constitute a serious public health risk, affecting one-third of the world's population. Remarkable progress has been made to improve WASH; however, challenges remain, with rapid population growth adding pressure on WASH systems. This study explores the current state of WASH practices and diseases in Africa, identifies challenges, and proposes public health recommendations for sustainable implementation. MAIN BODY: The staggering burden of WASH-related diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in Af

Silos and rigid processes: Barriers to the successful implementation of the Older prisoner Health and Social Care Assessment and Plan.

Older adults are the fastest growing sub-group in prisons. They have complex health, social care and custodial needs and often the support they receive is sub-optimal. The Older prisoner Health and Social Care Assessment and Plan (OHSCAP) aimed to better meet these inter-related needs. As part of a wider study, a randomised controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the OHSCAPs effectiveness in meeting older prisoners' health, social care and custodial needs in comparison to treatment as usual. This article describes the nested qualitative study which aimed to explore the barriers and facilita

Considerations for Developing a Mental Health Emergency Action Plan for High School Football Programs and Athletic Departments.

High school students in the United States are being educated during an unprecedented time of social unrest, public health concerns, and gun violence. High school student athletes can be further challenged by sports-related stressors that may lead to anxiety, burnout, depression, disordered eating, sleep difficulty, performance-based identity concerns, and substance use. High school football players, in particular, are at higher risk of concussion, musculoskeletal injury, and may feel excess pressure to compete from coaches, parents, and peers. One way to address these stressors among high scho

Usefulness and Usability of a Personal Health Record and Survivorship Care Plan for Colorectal Cancer Survivors: Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: As a result of improvements in cancer screening, treatment, and supportive care, nearly two-thirds of individuals diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) live for 5 years after diagnosis. An ever-increasing population of CRC survivors creates a need for effective survivorship care to help manage and mitigate the impact of CRC and its treatment. Personal health records (PHRs) and survivorship care plans provide a means of supporting the long-term care of cancer survivors. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to characterize the usefulness of a CRC PHR and survivorship care plan a

The Department of Health Action Plan "Improving Services for People with Epilepsy": a significant advance or only a first step?

The government in England has supported the production of a number of reports on services for people with epilepsy over the last three or four decades but these have not come with any promise to provide resources or to achieve change. In recent years, the voluntary agencies have worked with government in undertaking some very worthwhile initiatives. The publication of the audit on epilepsy-related deaths and the commitment of the Chief Medical Officer have led to the production of an Action Plan entitled "Improving Services for People with Epilepsy". This Plan covers many of the key issues in

Severe Mental Health Screening Signals Among Multinational Hajj Pilgrims in 2025: Implications for Multilingual Healthcare Encounters and Referral Planning.

Background/Objectives: Large multinational mass gatherings can create healthcare encounters in which severe mental health screening signals require rapid recognition, confidential assessment, language support, and referral. During Hajj, culturally and linguistically diverse pilgrims may first disclose severe psychological symptoms in general medical or field settings rather than through specialist psychiatric pathways. This study estimated the prevalence, overlap, and adjusted correlates of severe screen-positive mental health symptom signals among adult multinational Hajj pilgrims in 2025 and

Cholangiocarcinoma protective factors in Greater Mekong Subregion: Critical issues for joint planning to sustainably solve regional public health problems.

Although Opisthorchis viverrini (OV), lifestyle, and diet co-factors have a relatively high prevalence in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) population, cumulative (0-74) incidence rates of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) do not reach 5% in this region. Other co-factors must influence, but in this study, we only highlighted positive factors for guiding joint planning to address public health problems at the regional level. Therefore, we aimed to study prevalence and factors associated with CCA incidence focusing only on protective factors. A cross-sectional analytic study was carried out from June to

Developing Health-Based Pre-Planning Clearance Goals for Airport Remediation Following Chemical Terrorist Attack: Introduction and Key Assessment Considerations.

In the event of a chemical terrorist attack on a transportation hub, post-event remediation and restoration activities necessary to attain unrestricted facility reuse and re-entry could require hours to multiple days. While restoration timeframes are dependent on numerous variables, a primary controlling factor is the level of pre-planning and decision-making completed prior to chemical terrorist release. What follows is the first of a two-part analysis identifying key considerations, critical information, and decision criteria to facilitate post-attack and post-decontamination consequence man

From past to better public health programme planning for possible future global threats: case studies applied to infection control.

The impact of weather change and global pollution on the development and/or the transformation of microorganisms is no longer to be demonstrated. In this respect, heavy trends can be taken into account. This general context needs the development of anticipation procedures and the knowledge of the perception of prevention by the public for short, medium and long term actions. After a short discussion on the concept of emerging issues, the authors present some past examples of public health programs. These examples (malaria, dengue, chikungunya and cholera) are used to propose optimized ways of

Mental health, treatment preferences, advance care planning, location, and quality of death in advanced cancer patients with dependent children.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians observe that advanced cancer patients with dependent children agonize over the impact their death will have on their children. The objective of this study was to determine empirically whether advanced cancer patients with and without dependent children differ in treatment preferences, mental health, and end-of-life (EOL) outcomes. METHODS: Coping with Cancer is a National Cancer Institute/National Institute of Mental Health-funded, multi-institutional, prospective cohort study of 668 patients with advanced cancer. Patients with and without dependent children were compar

Health Management Planning for Landscape Fire Smoke Events: A Literature Review and Suggested Human-Centred Framework for Resource Development.

Poor air quality arising from landscape fire smoke (LFS) events presents a substantial health burden to at-risk individuals and communities. However, there are few dedicated health management resources available for priority populations, despite increasing climate-related landscape fire risks. We conducted a literature review to analyse health management plans and strategies available for at-risk individuals in Australia, Canada and the United States. Our review identified four resources, of which only two were dedicated LFS health action plans, revealing a critical gap in preparedness. Given
