Official Development Assistance and Private Voluntary Support for Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health in Guinea-Bissau: Assessing Trends and Effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and child health (RMNCH) remains a key priority for official development assistance and private voluntary assistance (ODA+) in low-income countries. In Guinea-Bissau, maternal and child mortality rates remain high, with the healthcare system heavily dependent on foreign aid. This study analyzes ODA+ trends for RMNCH in Guinea-Bissau from 2002 to 2018 and assesses its impact on maternal, neonatal, infsupplent, and under-five mortality rates. METHODS: We used data from the OECD Creditor Reporting System and applied the Muskoka2 methodology to estima

Building climate-resilient health systems in Sierra Leone: addressing the dual burden of infectious and climate-related diseases.

Climate change presents a profound challenge to global health, disproportionately affecting low-income countries like Sierra Leone. This opinion examines the dual burden of infectious and climate-related diseases and their implications for Sierra Leone's health systems. Rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns intensify vector-borne diseases such as malaria and Lassa fever, while flooding exacerbates waterborne diseases in overcrowded urban areas. Concurrently, climate-driven food insecurity worsens malnutrition, particularly among children, and heat stress contributes to the growing

Systematic Review: HIV, Aging, and Housing-A North American Perspective, 2012-2023.

Advances in anti-retroviral therapy (ART) have decreased mortality rates and subsequently led to a rise in the number of HIV-positive people living longer. The housing experiences of this new population of interest-older adults (50 years and older) living with HIV-are under-researched. Understanding the housing experiences and unmet needs of older people with HIV can better provide comprehensive care services for them. This study's systematic review evaluated the peer-reviewed literature reporting housing access/insecurity/assistance/options, housing impact, and unmet needs of older individual

Prevalence of Civil Legal Needs and Associated Characteristics Among US Department of Veterans Affairs Patients: A National Survey.

BACKGROUND: The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) refers patients to affiliated legal clinics to assist with health-related social needs like housing and benefits. However, little is known about the prevalence of various types of civil legal needs (CLNs) among VA patients and sociodemographic/clinical correlates. This limits the VA's ability to tailor medical-legal collaborations to patients' needs and identify subpopulations most likely to experience these needs. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of eight types of CLNs (housing, family, wills/inheritance, VA benefits, non-VA benefits,

Financial toxicity questionnaire (FIT): development and validation of the italian version (FITALY) in head and neck cancer patients undergoing multimodal curative treatment.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity from cancer treatments is rising as an important patient-reported outcome. Its relevance was first assessed in the context of privately financed healthcare system, where the financial hardship caused by out-of-pocket payments negatively affects survival, while fewer evidence exists on its role in countries where care is financed by the public health care system. Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) patients face an increased risk for financial toxicity due to multimodal treatment and relevant out of pocket costs. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an Italian

The Rhetoric of Healthcare and the Moral Debate About Theatre-Funded Hospitals in Early Modern Spain.

While early modern Spain may seem a world away, it is an extremely rich and relevant context for gaining a better understanding of the Rhetoric of Health, specifically the power of metaphor, in the related spheres of policy-making and public debate. It was a time and place in which the urban populace's physical well-being depended upon the fortunes of theatrical performances due to a system of alms for hospitals driven by ticket receipts. Anti-theatricalists argued that the immoral nature of theatrical performances made them spiritually and medically detrimental to society. Pro-theatricalists

Assessing equity of access and affordability of care among South Sudanese refugees and host communities in two districts in Uganda: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The vast majority of refugees are hosted in low and middle income countries (LMICs), which are already struggling to finance and achieve universal health coverage for their own populations. While there is mounting evidence of barriers to health care access facing refugees, there is more limited evidence on equity in access to and affordability of care across refugee and host populations. The objective of this study was to examine equity in terms of health needs, service utilisation, and health care payments both within and between South Sudanese refugees and hosts communities (Ugan

Both ends of artificial intelligence impacting privacy: a review of violation and protection.

The intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and privacy presents both significant challenges and opportunities. As AI systems become increasingly embedded in many aspects of our lives, including healthcare, finance, and social networks, and introduce significant concerns regarding privacy issues - the need for effective privacy-preserving mechanisms also grows. This review systematically analyzes 94 research papers in the field of AI and privacy. To model this complex issue, we categorized privacy in AI through a multi-dimensional approach that includes technological domains' privacy acti

Measures to monitor the implementation of Essential Health Benefit Packages at a national scale.

Universal health coverage requires identifying who is covered by which services. However, weak health information systems hinder monitoring coverage of Essential Health Benefit Packages (EHBPs). We developed a method for measuring input-adjusted coverage, a potential coverage metric, combining geographic proximity with minimum-input facility readiness, using Malawi as a case study. We mapped the Disease Control Priorities Project interventions to the 2019 Harmonized Health Facility Assessment, constructing transparent input-based readiness indicators. We assessed readiness and generated readin

Advance directives and nominated representatives: A critique.

With the ratification of the landmark United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities by India, it was imperative to revamp the mental health-care legislation, among other changes. Most notably, a presumption of mental capacity has been introduced, which means a paradigm shift in the client and provider relationship. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 empowers all persons to make advance directives (AD) and nominate representatives for shared decision-making. Psychiatric ADs (PADs) also seem to improve the information exchange between the care provider and the service user. PADs

From struggle to strength: transforming breast cancer screening for women in low- and middle-income countries.

Breast cancer is not just a disease; it is a global crisis that continues to claim lives, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where late-stage diagnosis is the norm rather than the exception. Unlike high-income countries (HICs), where early detection has significantly improved survival rates, women in LMICs face an uphill battle against fragmented healthcare systems, limited diagnostic tools, cultural barriers, and financial constraints. The very technologies that revolutionized screening in HICs remain out of reach for many, leaving millions vulnerable to preventable death

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Diabetic Foot Ulcers in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Critical Review of Clinical Evidence, Health-System Feasibility and Public Health Implications.

Diabetic foot ulcers are an important cause of morbidity, amputation, disability and healthcare expenditure in sub-Saharan Africa, where limitations in preventive foot care, referral pathways, vascular services, multidisciplinary wound care and financial protection may contribute to poor outcomes. This critical narrative review evaluates the potential role of systemic hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunct to standard diabetic foot ulcer care in sub-Saharan Africa by integrating evidence on clinical effectiveness and safety with health-system, economic, equity and implementation consideration

A Sociological Framework for Improving Palliative Pain Care in Low-Resource Nations.

This paper applies institutional theory to palliative pain care in low resource nations (LRNs), suggesting that three interdependent pillars shape access: regulative (laws and rules), normative (professional standards and values), and cultural-cognitive (shared beliefs). Biomedical solutions alone are insufficient. Lasting progress requires coordinated legal reform, professional accountability, and culturally sensitive engagement. RECENT FINDINGS: Restrictive regulations, stigmatizing policy language, and administrative bottlenecks limit access to essential analgesics, while the inverse care l

The incremental cost of traumatic brain injury during the first year after a road traffic accident.

This study aims to determine the incremental cost of TBI during the first year after a traffic accident, compared to other patients with similar non-TBI injuries. Secondly, identification of factors associated with medical costs of TBI is pursued. Analyses were performed on administrative data for traffic victims hospitalised in Belgium between 2009 and 2011. Medical costs attributable to the accident are estimated over one year post-injury. Cases with TBI were matched to controls with similar non-TBI injuries to determine the incremental cost of TBI. Both aims of this research were assessed u
