Population-genetic and evolutionary context of a CRIP3 variant associated with age-related hearing loss.

Age-related hearing loss is a widespread sensory impairment affecting one third of the elderly population, yet the genetic underpinnings of this condition remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigate the evolutionary context of a non-synonymous variant (rs2242416) in the CRIP3 gene, which is expressed in auditory hair cells, and previously associated with hearing loss. We first confirm that rs2242416 shows strong and consistent association with hearing loss across multiple genome-wide association studies. Notably, rs2242416 is also associated with reduced risk of heart related

Global problem of drug-induced hearing loss.

Clinically used drugs and chemical agents may potentially cause adverse effects to the human auditory and vestibular systems. Many of them, such as aminoglycosides and cisplatin, can play a critical role in the treatment of serious or life-threatening diseases; others, like loop diuretics or salycilates, offer such important therapeutical effects compared to the ototoxic side effects that the ototoxicity risk can be considered to be of minor importance. The problem of ototoxic side effects is more acute in developing countries, where highly effective and low-cost drugs are more easily prescrib

What leads to coordinated attention in parent-toddler interactions? Children's hearing status matters.

Coordinated attention between children and their parents plays an important role in their social, language, and cognitive development. The current study used head-mounted eye-trackers to investigate the effects of children's prelingual hearing loss on how they achieve coordinated attention with their hearing parents during free-flowing object play. We found that toddlers with hearing loss (age: 24-37 months) had similar overall gaze patterns (e.g., gaze length and proportion of face looking) as their normal-hearing peers. In addition, children's hearing status did not affect how likely parents

The Severity of Infection Determines the Localization of Damage and Extent of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Experimental Pneumococcal Meningitis.

UNLABELLED: Hearing loss is an important sequela of pneumococcal meningitis (PM), occurring in up to 30% of survivors. The role of the severity of infection on hearing function and pathomorphological consequences in the cochlea secondary to PM have not been investigated to date. Using a well-established model of PM, we systematically investigated the functional hearing outcome and the long-term fate of neurosensory cells in the cochlea, i.e., hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs), with a focus on their tonotopic distribution. Intracisternal infection of infant rats with increasing inoc

Ageing and hearing loss.

Although many adults retain good hearing as they age, hearing loss associated with ageing is common among elderly persons. There are a number of pathophysiolological processes underlying age-related changes to functional components in the inner ear. Genetic factors determine the ageing process but are under the influence of intrinsic and environmental factors. It is difficult to distinguish changes of normal ageing from those of other contributing factors. The effects of age-related deafness can have significant physical, functional and mental health consequences. Although a deficit in hearing

Audiologic profile in patients with ankylosing spondylitis: A controlled study of 30 patients.

Recent studies have identified sensorineural hearing loss as a possible manifestation of ankylosing spondylitis. We conducted a study of 30 patients with ankylosing spondylitis to characterize their audiologic profile and to correlate their disease activity and functional indices with their hearing thresholds. The study group was made up of 18 men and 12 women, aged 25 to 58 years (mean: 46.5), who were diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. We compared their findings with a socially and demographically matched group of 30 healthy controls. All 60 participants underwent an audiologic assessmen

Contribution of Tinnitus and Hearing Loss to Depression: NHANES Population Study.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss affects the emotional well-being of adults and is sometimes associated with clinical depression. Chronic tinnitus is highly comorbid with hearing loss and separately linked with depression. In this article, the authors investigated the combined effects of hearing loss and tinnitus on depression in the presence of other moderating influences such as demographic, lifestyle, and health factors. DESIGN: The authors used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (2011-2012 and 2015-2016) to determine the effects of hearing loss and tinnitus on depression in

Course of a sudden sensorineural hearing loss case diagnosed as intra-labyrinthine hemorrhage with MRI in the early phase.

Intralabyrinthine hemorrhage (ILH) is a rare differential diagnosis of sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Investigations using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the early phase from the onset are inevitable to diagnose ILH. However, MRI is not usually performed during the early phases of sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Hence, ILH is rarely diagnosed, and the hearing prognosis and vestibular function in patients have been poorly understood. In the present study, we report the detailed course of ILH with relatively good hearing recovery. Additionally, vestibular function recovery was quanti

A cross-sectional study of speech- and language-abilities of children with normal hearing, mild fluctuating conductive hearing loss, or moderate to profound sensoneurinal hearing loss.

A total of 1528 pre-school children (mean age 4 years and 9 months), being identified as speech or language delayed, were evaluated with respect to micro-otoscopy, nose and throat pathology, hearing function, and speech-language abilities. Subjects were classified into groups of (I) constant normal hearing, (II) fluctuating conductive hearing loss and (III) bilateral moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss requiring hearing aids. In groups II and III, severe speech and language pathologies were found more frequently than in group I. Additionally, auditory perception skills were less in

Re-Emergent Inhibition of Cochlear Inner Hair Cells in a Mouse Model of Hearing Loss.

UNLABELLED: Hearing loss among the elderly correlates with diminished social, mental, and physical health. Age-related cochlear cell death does occur, but growing anatomical evidence suggests that synaptic rearrangements on sensory hair cells also contribute to auditory functional decline. Here we present voltage-clamp recordings from inner hair cells of the C57BL/6J mouse model of age-related hearing loss, which reveal that cholinergic synaptic inputs re-emerge during aging. These efferents are functionally inhibitory, using the same ionic mechanisms as do efferent contacts present transientl

The effects of noise on the vestibular system.

PURPOSE: Subjects with noise-induced hearing loss sometimes also complain about balance disorders, but reports of clinical series that give contradictory results are highly controversial. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of intense noise on the vestibular labyrinth, both in subjects with symmetrical hearing loss and in subjects with asymmetrical loss, and to examine the correlation between the subjects' complaints and the results of the vestibular function tests. METHODS: A total of 258 male military personnel, heavily exposed to various intense noises, were included in the stu
