BACKGROUND: The genetic basis of atrial fibrillation (AF) and congenital heart disease remains incompletely understood.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the causative mutation in a family with AF, atrial septal defects, and ventricular septal defects.
METHODS: We evaluated a pedigree with 16 family members, 1 with an atrial septal defect, 1 with a ventricular septal defect, and 3 with AF; we performed whole exome sequencing in 3 affected family members. Given that early-onset AF was prominent in the family, we then screened individuals with early-onset AF, defined as an age of onset <66 yea

INTRODUCTION: Atrial septal defect is the most common congenital heart disease in adults. The secundum defect is the most common anatomical variant. Atrial septal defect usually causes subtle or no symptoms in pediatrics. However, as patients age, the left-to-right shunt increases and more symptoms appear. Atrial septal defect closure is indicated when there is a clinically significant left-to-right shunt, either by echocardiographic data in terms of right-sided dilation, hemodynamic parameters with Qp:Qs ratio over 1.5:1, or the appearance of clinical symptoms.

Atrial septal defects represent one of the most common congenital heart diseases in humans as well as in dogs and cats. However, reports in wildlife animals are limited. Additionally, ensuring treatment compliance and regular follow-ups in these species are often challenging. The aim of the present clinical brief is to describe the first successful long-term medical management of a nonrestrictive atrial septal defect in a crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis). A seven-year-old castrated male crab-eating macaque was diagnosed with a severe left-to-right shunting, 7.5 mm atrial septal defect

A 6-year-old boy was diagnosed as having atrial septal defect with oversystemic pulmonary hypertension, and gradually developed hypoxia and heart failure. At the age of 11, living-related bilateral lobar lung transplantation from his parents was indicated, because of his critical condition. The estimated forced vital capacity calculated by the donors' lower lobes was 104% of his age. The operation was carried out with simultaneous closure of the atrial septal defect under full cardiopulmonary bypass. The postoperative course was complicated with pulmonary edema and phrenic nerve palsy, which w

PURPOSE: The population-based National Down Syndrome Project combined epidemiological and molecular methods to study congenital heart defects in Down syndrome.
METHODS: Between 2000 and 2004, six sites collected DNA, clinical, and epidemiological information on parents and infants. We used logistic regression to examine factors associated with the most common Down syndrome-associated heart defects.
RESULTS: Of 1469 eligible infants, major cardiac defects were present in 44%; atrioventricular septal defect (39%), secundum atrial septal defect (42%), ventricular septal defect (43%), and tetral

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the value of four-chamber view for the prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease.
METHODS: A total of 780 fetal hearts were examined by the four-chamber view between 16 and 36 weeks of gestation, and the clinical data were analyzed and the newborns were followed.
RESULTS: Among the 780 fetus, the four-chamber view was obtained in 94.6% of the fetus and three of them were found abnormal and heart malformations were diagnosed. One was Ebstein syndrome, the second was seriously ventricular septal defect and the third was single ventricle and single atrium. The fir

Situs inversus with mirror-image of the heart is a rare condition. The present report describes a case of a patient with dextrocardia with situs inversus who had atrial septal defect with multiple holes in the fossa ovalis. The patient underwent total endoscopic atrial septal defect repair using the da Vinci surgical system. This procedure was achieved safely with good clinical and excellent cosmetic results.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the ability of two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography alone, without cardiac catheterization, to evaluate infants < 1 year of age for complete open heart repair of complete balanced atrioventricular (AV) septal defect.
BACKGROUND: Two-dimensional echocardiographic-Doppler examinations provide accurate anatomic detail in patients with AV septal defect. Lung biopsy data have shown that patients rarely develop significant inoperable pulmonary vascular disease before 7 months of age. Although calculated pulmonary arteriolar resistance is often elevated in you

Trifoliate left atrioventricular (AV) valve with common atrioventricular junction is considered part of the spectrum of atrioventricular septal defect. This valve morphology is typically associated with defects in the AV septum resulting in communication at the atrial or ventricular level, but has also been described as an isolated defect in the setting of a common AV junction without AV septal defect. Trifoliate left AV valve exhibits a line of apposition between the bridging leaflets that is directed toward the inlet interventricular septum, distinguishing it from isolated mitral valve cleft

The authors report a rare case of situs solitus of viscera and atria, dextrocardia, atrioventricular discordance, atrial and ventricular septal defects, origin of both great arteries from the morphologic right ventricle, pulmonary valvar and subvalvar stenosis and l-malposition of the aorta which has been correctly diagnosed and succesfully operated on. The repair was accomplished by closing the ventricular septal defect through a ventriculotomy in the systemic venous ventricle (morphologic left), and placing a conduit between this ventricle and the pulmonary artery which had been ligated prox

A time-resolved spin-labeled cineangiographic MRI technique for visualizing blood flow in the heart and defects of the atrial septum is described. The method utilizes a spin labeling preparation and a time-resolved balanced steady-state free precession imaging readout that enhances blood in the left atrium or right atrium and suppresses background signal through inversion recovery. Four volunteer studies and 10 patient studies were performed at 1.5 T to characterize the signal properties and to test the clinical feasibility of depicting atrial septal defects. In volunteers, the spin-labeled ci

Intracardiac shunts are among the most common cardiac lesions seen in adult patients with congenital heart disease. Shunt lesions comprise much of the de novo congenital heart disease diagnosed in adults and engender a wide range of pathophysiologic consequences with a variety of treatment options. This article discusses the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, indications for intervention, late management issues, and pregnancy in adults with atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, and patent ductus arteriosus.

A 10-year-old female with atrial septal defect presented with bilateral ovarian mature cystic teratomas. Three spleniculi adjacent to the main spleen were noticed while the endoscopic surgery. Two years later a heart tumor was discovered which led to death. Pathologic examination of samples of the mass proved it to be a liposarcoma. The unusual combination of atrial septal defect, f-anisosplenia (female, congenital heart disease, multiple unevenly-sized spleens, left lung type pulmonary isomerism), bilateral ovarian mature cystic teratomas and liposarcoma of the heart appears to be a unique pr

Certain morphologic aspects of atrioventricular septal defects ("endocardial cushion defects," "atrioventricular canal malformations") remain controversial. It is still not clear which precise lesions should not be placed in this category. For example, is an "isolated" cleft of the mitral valve or a perimembranous inlet ventricular septal defect to be so described? It is also not fully accepted that the left atrioventricular valve in these lesions bears little resemblance to a morphologically mitral valve. We have investigated these problems by both observation and mensuration. We determined t

Elderly patients with multiple comorbidities often face complex cardiac challenges, including aortic valve issues and atrial septal defects. Traditional open-heart surgery may not be viable for this demographic. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) emerges as a preferred alternative. In this case, a frail patient with multiple comorbidities, atrial septal defect, and significant aortic stenosis and regurgitation underwent a one-stop procedure, combining TAVI and atrial septal defect closure, guided by advanced imaging, including three-dimensional ultrasound. Ultrasound played a pivot
