Severe Helicobacter pylori infection in a patient with AIDS.

A 30-year-old man with AIDS presented with symptoms of fever, epigastric pain and weight loss, together with histological findings of Helicobacter pylori-induced gastritis. His symptoms resolved with treatment, as indicated by the clearing of his H. pylori infection on repeat gastric biopsy. Although uncommon, H. pylori infection can cause severe illness in patients with AIDS.

Helicobacter pylori infection in elderly dyspeptic patients.

The association between Helicobacter pylori (HP) and gastritis is well established. As there is evidence that HP infection increases with age we reviewed the clinicopathological records of 119 consecutive patients aged 65-85 years (mean 71.1 years) on whom gastroscopy had been performed for dyspeptic symptoms. All patients had two antral biopsies--one was assessed for histological evidence of gastritis and the other was independently assessed for evidence of HP infection. Thirty-six patients (30%) had duodenal ulceration, of whom 32 (89%) had an associated HP-positive gastritis. Forty-nine pat

Relationship between helicobacter pylori infection and pityriasis versicolor: can helicobacter pylori infection be a new etiologic factor for pityriasis versicolor?

BACKGROUND/AIM: H. pylori has been found to be related to certain dermatological diseases. However, there is no data as yet to propose an association between H. pylori and pityriasis versicolor. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association between H. pylori and pityriasis versicolor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study performed in the Gastroenterology and Dermatology and Venereology departments of the Health Sciences University, Ankara Training and Research Centre. A total of 57 consecutive patients (27 pityriasis versicolor, 30 telogen effluvium) were enrolled from th

Long term infection of the gastric mucosa with Helicobacter species does induce atrophic gastritis in an animal model of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Gastric atrophy is a precursor lesion in the development of gastric cancer. It has been proposed that atrophy is part of a natural progression of inflammatory changes that result from long term infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis using an animal model of human Helicobacter infection. Conventional mice were infected with either a cat isolate of Helicobacter felis or a human isolate of "Gastrospirillum hominis". All infected mice showed a slowly progressive chronic gastritis with increasing numbers of infiltrating mononuclear cells

Serodiagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

In contrast to the established role of Helicobacter pylori gastritis in gastritis and duodenal ulcer in general, conflicting results have been reported in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The seroprevalence during early HIV infection is unknown. We retrospectively studied 102 patients with HIV infection early during the infection and in most cases in asymptomatic patients. Serological IgG antibody response to H. pylori was assessed by ELISA. Compared with an age-matched control group the seroprevalence of H. pylori positivit

The immune response to tuberculosis infection in the setting of Helicobacter pylori and helminth infections.

We screened 176 healthy, adult (aged 18-55 years) US refugees from tuberculosis (TB)-endemic countries to evaluate whether cytokine responses to latent TB infection (LTBI) are modified in the setting of concurrent H. pylori and helminth infection. As measured by the Quantiferon-TB GOLD interferon-γ release assay, a total 38 (22%) subjects had LTBI, of which 28 (74%) also were H. pylori seropositive and/or helminth infected. Relative to ten subjects with LTBI only, 16 subjects with concurrent H. pylori infection had significantly elevated levels of IFN-γ, and nine subjects with both H. pylori a

Helicobacter spp. infection in cats: evaluation of the humoral immune response and prevalence of gastric Helicobacter spp.

The principal aims of this study were to evaluate the humoral immune response (IgG) of cats with gastric Helicobacter spp. infection, and to determine the prevalence of different types of Helicobacter spp. in the stomachs of cats. The Helicobacter infection status of 45 cats (12 healthy spay/neuter cats, 9 sick cats, 24 colony cats) was determined by evaluating endoscopic gastric biopsies for urease activity, presence of Helicobacter-like organisms (HLO) on histopathology, and genus and species-specific PCR. Serum samples were evaluated with a kinetic enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)

Effect of helicobacter pylori eradication on sideropenic refractory anaemia in adolescent girls with Helicobacter pylori infection.

We investigated the effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication on sideropenic refractory anaemia in adolescent girls with H. pylori-associated antral gastritis without evidence of haemorrhage or clinical symptoms other than sideropenic anaemia. We conducted an open therapeutic trial in 21 adolescent girls aged 15-17 y with sideropenic refractory anaemia, which was defined as iron-deficiency anaemia refractory to oral iron therapy for 3 mo. All subjects underwent gastroduodenal endoscopy. Thirteen patients with confirmed H. pylori infection were given a 2-wk course of triple therapy and 6 wk of

Helicobacter pylori outer membrane vesicles involvement in the infection development and Helicobacter pylori-related diseases.

Helicobacter pylori - (H. pylori) play a role in the pathogenesis of gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers as well as gastric cancer. A possible involvement of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) produced by H. pylori in the distribution of bacterial antigens through the gastric epithelial barrier and their role in the development of local and systemic host inflammatory and immune responses has been suggested. OMVs contain various biologically active compounds, which internalize into host cells affecting signaling pathways and promoting apoptosis of gastric epithelial and immunocompetent cells. OM

The Sweeping Role of Cholesterol Depletion in the Persistence of Helicobacter pylori Infections.

The ability of Helicobacter pylori to persist lifelong in the human gastric mucosa is a striking phenomenon. It is even more surprising since infection is typically associated with a vivid inflammatory response. Recent studies revealed the mechanism by which this pathogen inhibits the epithelial responses to IFN-γ and other central inflammatory cytokines in order to abolish an effective antimicrobial defense. The mechanism is based on the modification and depletion of cholesterol by the pathogen's cholesterol-α-glucosyltransferase. It abrogates the assembly of numerous cytokine receptors due t
