Host-Feeding Sources and Infection With Trypanosoma cruzi of Triatoma infestans and Triatoma eratyrusiformis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) From the Calchaqui Valleys in Northwestern Argentina.

We assessed the prevalence of infection with Trypanosoma cruzi, parasite genotypes (discrete typing units, DTUs), and the host-feeding sources of domestic and peridomestic Triatoma infestans Klug and Triatoma eratyrusiformis Del Ponte in eight rural communities of the subandean Calchaqui valleys in northwestern Argentina. We sought to analyze their epidemiological role in the context of routine vector surveillance and control actions. Infection with T. cruzi was determined by optic microscopy or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the hypervariable region of kinetoplast DNA minici

Evaluation and Validation of Stable Reference Genes for Accurate Gene Expression Analysis Across Developmental Stages, Sexes, and Tissues of Helopeltis antonii (Hemiptera: Miridae).

Helopeltis antonii Signoret is an important sucking pest of cashew and other tree crops. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) is a widely used technique for analyzing gene expression. The selection of reliable reference genes is critical for accurate quantification of target gene expression using RT-qPCR. There are no studies to identify reliable reference genes or gene expression studies in H. antonii. In this study, the expression stability of eight candidate genes, RPS3A, βTubulin1, RPL13A, 18S, EF1α, Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 g (UBQ), GAPDH, and TBP, was evaluated across

Manipulation of Microbial Symbionts in Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) Reveals Divergent Impacts on Insect Host Fitness and Plant Defense Modulation.

Insect-microbe symbioses play pivotal roles in host ecology and plant-insect interactions, yet their species-specific functions in agricultural pests remain less understood. This study elucidates the functional role of symbiotic microbial communities in mediating insect host fitness and plant defense responses in two economically important whitefly species, Bemisia tabaci Gennadius and Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). Using integrated molecular and physiological approaches, we characterized species-specific responses to antibiotic treatments (rifampicin and tetracyc…

Biology of Chagas disease vectors: biological cycle and emergence rates of Rhodnius marabaensis Souza et al., 2016 (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae) under laboratory conditions.

In Latin America, Chagas disease has been mostly transmitted to humans by contact with the feces or urine of triatomine species infected with the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. There are currently 156 species in the subfamily Triatominae, distributed in 18 genera and five tribes. The prolixus group of the genus Rhodnius is composed of 11 species. Rhodnius marabaensis was the last species described and considered in this grouping of vectors. Knowledge about the biology, ecology, and behavior of these vectors is of great epidemiological importance, and in order to expand the knowledge of the biolo

Relatively Small Quantities of CO2, Ammonium Bicarbonate, and a Blend of (E)-2-Hexenal Plus (E)-2-Octenal Attract Bed Bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

Bed bugs, Cimex lectularius L., feed on humans, have increased exponentially in the past two decades in many major cities throughout the world, have caused intense infestations, and have become a significant health concern. Improved traps are needed to detect early infestations, to assess control programs, and for control of bed bugs. Carbon dioxide released alone or simultaneously with other attractants into three types of traps at the relatively low rate of 1 ml/min caught significantly more bed bugs than untreated controls in a 183- by 183-cm arena. This finding may enable CO2 to be used mo

Checklist of the adventive psyllids (Hemiptera, Psylloidea) of the Hawaiian Islands, including new state records, identification key, and description of a new species of Australopsylla.

In recent years, an increase in baseline arthropod surveys and closer scrutiny of specimens from current and past collections have resulted in a rise of adventive psyllid species discoveries in the Hawaiian Islands. In some cases, the new records reported here may have been known for some time but not officially published in the literature. In other cases, specimens remained unidentified for several years. We provide an updated checklist of the 23 adventive psyllid species in the Hawaiian Islands, including six new state records, and at least one new island record. The majority of recent psyll

The Male Reproductive System of the Kissing Bug, Rhodnius prolixus Stål, 1859 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae): Arrangements of the Muscles and the Myoactivity of the Selected Neuropeptides.

The gross anatomy of the male reproductive structures and their associated musculature are described in the blood-gorging vector of Chagas disease, Rhodnius prolixus. The male reproductive system is composed of muscular tissues each performing contractions that aid in the movement of sperm out of the testis into the vas deferens, seminal vesicle and then into the ejaculatory duct, along with proteins and lipids from the transparent and opaque accessory glands. Phalloidin staining shows the various patterns of muscle fiber layers, from thin circular to more complex crisscross patterns, implying

Characterization of Feeding Behavior and its Relationship With the Longevity of Wild and Peridomestic Triatoma dimidiata, Latreille 1811 (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) Under Laboratory Conditions.

Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille 1811) is considered the second most important vector of the Trypanosa cruzi etiological agent of Chagas disease in Colombia. It has a life cycle that involves a domiciled, peridomiciled, and wild distribution. The study of feeding behavior and its influence on the survival of sylvatic and peridomestic populations can help identify a possible differential risk in the transmission of Chagas disease to humans, mainly in northwestern and east-central Colombia. We characterize the main parameters of feeding behavior and their influence on the longevity and survival of

Knockdown of the ionotropic γ-aminobutyric acid receptor (GABAR) RDL gene decreases fipronil susceptibility of the small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus (Hemiptera: Delphacidae).

Insect γ-aminobutyric acid receptors (GABARs) are important molecular targets of cyclodiene and phenylpyrazole insecticides. Previously GABARs encoding rdl (resistant to dieldrin) genes responsible for dieldrin and fipronil resistance were identified in various economically important insect pests. In this study, we cloned the open reading frame cDNA sequence of rdl gene from fipronil-susceptible and fipronil-resistant strains of Laodelphax striatellus (Lsrdl). Sequence analysis confirmed the presence of a previously identified resistance-conferring mutation. Different alternative splicing vari
