Neonatal hypophysectomy in chicken, as well as that in old hen has been established to entail in 1,5 months after surgery cellular and humoral immunity disturbances, pronounced hypercoagulation and fibrinolysis depression. Administration of Epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) to a large extent eliminates revealed shifts. This effect appeared to be stronger in neonatally hypophysectomized chicken than in old hens.

Hematemesis and/or melena are the most common presentations of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Endoscopic hemostasis after diagnosis still remains a challenge to the gastroenterologist. Most variceal and peptic ulcer bleeding episodes stop spontaneously, and then prevention of rebleeding might be indicated by endoscopic techniques. Four not so well known endoscopic hemostasis techniques are discussed and comparative studies are reviewed.

Treatment of bleeding psedoaneurysms and pseudocysts of the pancreas is controversial. Surgical treatment with pancreatic resection or trancystic arterial ligation is not always satisfactory since postoperative mortality rate is high, especially for lesions located in the pancreatic head and rebleeding is not unusual. The levels of thromboxane B2, prostaglandin 6-keto F1 alpha (PG F1 alpha), thrombocytic factor IV (TF IV), and beta-thromboglobulin (beta-TG) were measured in 66 patients with postinfarction cardiosclerosis concurrent with acute recurrent myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris. There was a substantial increase in thromboxane B2 activity and a less significant elevation of PG F1 alpha, as well as a rise of TF IV and beta-TG. Circulatory insufficiency, cardiac aneurysm, intracardiac thrombi were accompanied by much more severe abnormalities in the above-mentioned parameters.

Altogether 38 patients (33 men and 5 women) suffering from grave and moderate hemorrhagic fever with nephrotic syndrome (HFNS) were examined. Fibrin glue (FG) is an effective hemostatic agent applied topically to the spleen. In this study, FG was found to be an effective hemostatic agent when applied topically in standardized wounds of the canine liver, spleen, and pancreas. It was markedly more effective, however, when injected intraparenchymally. In a case of severe blunt trauma in a patient with acute alcoholic hepatitis, intraparenchymal FG was lifesaving. Fibrin glue is a useful adjunct in the management of trauma to all the abdominal solid viscera. Intraparenchymal injection is the preferred mode of FG application.

In acute animal experiments coagulation hemostasis reactions and blood acid-base state were investigated when dogs were breathing hypoxic (10% O2) or hypoxic-hypercapnic (10% O2, 5% CO2) gas mixtures. A simple assay system for measuring platelet retention in a standardized superficial skin wound is presented. The clinical value of a new in vitro test of hemostasis, which we have called Filter Bleeding Time (FBT), was determined in 59 patients referred because of a suspected bleeding disorder. Investigations on hemostasis with the infrared contact coagulator (ICC) after renal pole resections in dogs with and without clamping of the renal vessels are reported. Clamping the renal vessels led to less bleeding, but the coagulation time was distinctly prolonged. In addition the use of ICC in renal pole amputations in humans is described in two cases of urogenital tuberculosis. In both cases we were able to stop the bleeding quickly and satisfactorily without clamping the renal vessels. The results of animal experiments and the significance of using the ICC in man are discussed.
