The effect of zinc, nickel, cobalt and cadmium complexes of acyclovir (ACV) and its omicron-acetylated derivative (Ac-ACV) on the replication of wild type (wt) and ACV-resistant (ACV(R)) strains of Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) was examined. Incontinentia pigmenti is a multisystem genodermatosis characterized by cutaneous, neurologic, ophthalmologic, and dental abnormalities. The skin lesions associated with the disease progress through 4 stages, the first being erythematous vesicles linearly distributed along the lines of Blaschko. We report a case of an infant who had incontinentia pigmenti and presented with 2 crops of vesicles and was initially thought to have herpes simplex virus.

A 46-year-old man with HIV infection and AIDS presented with a large perianal ulcerated vegetative lesion that developed over a 1-year period. He had a past history of recurrent genital herpes infection, treated successfully each time with acyclovir. The perianal lesion developed while he was taking prophylactic acyclovir. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) was recovered from the cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) of 10 patients with acute aseptic meningitis. HSV type 1 was isolated from the CSF of a 6-month-old boy. The other 9 HSV isolates from CSF were from adults in the age-group 15 to 29 years; 7 of these isolates were available for typing and were identified as HSV type 2. Herpes simplex vegetans: atypical genital herpes infection in a patient with common variable immunodeficiency.

Large papillomatous lesions clinically resembling verrucous carcinoma may be caused by viruses other than human papillomavirus. We report a case of recurrent vegetations covering the entire vulva in a pregnant patient with common variable immunodeficiency. Herpes simplex virus was recovered from these lesions. The patient did not respond to intravenous acyclovir, but her lesions dramatically healed with two courses of intravenous foscarnet. Repeated biopsies may prove necessary in cases such as this to ensure proper diagnoses.
