AIDS risk behaviors and knowledge among heterosexual alcoholics and non-injecting drug users.

The disinhibitory effects of abusable substances on sexual behavior and the increasing HIV prevalence among heterosexuals suggest that alcoholics and non-injection drug users may be at risk for HIV infection. We examined alcohol and non-injection drug use as AIDS risk factors, AIDS risk knowledge, and the effect of AIDS education upon voluntary HIV testing among 91 heterosexual male inpatients in a VA alcohol rehabilitation program. Questionnaire data revealed relationships between age, the use of alcohol, marijuana and intranasal cocaine just prior to sex and an increase in the number of fema

[Risk factors for the heterosexual transmission of HIV from man to woman: a Spanish multicenter study].

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to estimate the rate of heterosexual transmission of HIV in a population of intravenous drug users (IVDU), as to well as to identify the possible risk factors associated. METHODS: One hundred thirty heterosexual couples were analyzed in which the male was seropositive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with the only possible risk factor for the companion being the sexual intercourse with the case index. RESULTS: The rate of global transmission estimated was 16% (confidence interval of 95% = 10-22.4%). The risk factors significantly associated t

Heterosexual co-transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) in female sexual partners of multitransfused men with hemophilia and to compare the frequency of transmission of HCV and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional measurement of HCV and HIV antibodies. SETTING: Ten hemophilia treatment centers. PATIENTS: A total of 234 female sexual partners of 231 multitransfused men with hemophilia. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The prevalence of antibodies to HCV (anti-HCV) among female sexual partners of HCV-positive men was 5 of 194 (2.6%). Anti-H

Fatal post-transfusion acquired immunodeficiency in a heterosexual man: quantitative lymph node immunopathology.

Employing a novel panel of monoclonal antibodies, we characterized in detail the quantitative immunopathologic alterations of lymph nodes in a 69-year-old heterosexual man who died of acquired immunodeficiency 1.5 years after transfusion of blood products. Absolute decreases were evident in total T cell, helper T cell, cytotoxic T cell, and Leu 8+ cell counts. Suppressor T cells and histiocytes were absolutely increased. There were relative increases in B cells and Leu 7+ cells. B-cell follicles were sparse and exhibited small, burned-out germinal centers composed predominantly of R4/23+ dendr

Primary Kaposi's sarcoma of the lung in an immunocompetent 32-year-old heterosexual white man.

Primary visceral involvement by Kaposi's sarcoma in the immunocompetent adult American population is extremely rare. Six cases of primary Kaposi's sarcoma of the lung have been previously reported; all four patients in whom immune function was evaluated had abnormalities. A case of primary Kaposi's sarcoma of the lung in a young adult heterosexual man with normal immunologic function is described. The patient had no response to either weekly vinblastine or doxorubicin (Adriamycin). A subsequent solitary right occipital metastasis responded to 3500 rad of radiotherapy. The patient died 3 months

Development of Anxiety Symptoms Among LGBTQ and Cisgender Heterosexual Adolescents: The Protective Role of Self-Esteem.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety often rises after the transition to high school, yet little is known about how these changes occur for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) adolescents who face unique minority stressors. This study examined longitudinal differences in anxiety trajectories between LGBTQ and cisgender heterosexual adolescents and evaluated whether self-esteem served as a protective factor. METHOD: Participants were 367 adolescents (Mage = 14.05 years; 60.5% cisgender girls; 46.6% White, 18.8% Black, 17.4% Asian, 5.7% Arab/Middle Eastern/North African, 5.2% Multiracial, 3.5%

Heavy drinking antecedents among bisexual+ and heterosexual women with sexual assault histories: A qualitative inquiry.

INTRODUCTION: Bisexual+ women are at high risk for alcohol use and sexual assault; yet reasons for high alcohol use among bisexual+ women remain unclear. The study aimed to examine: (1) antecedents of heavy drinking (i.e., microaggressions, coping motives, psychological distress) that could vary across drinking events and (2) how experiences might differ between bisexual+ and heterosexual women. METHODS: Participants were 45 young adult bisexual+ (n = 24) and heterosexual (n = 21) women who reported heavy episodic drinking (4+ drinks in a sitting) at least four times in the last 30 days and a

Dysfunctional romantic beliefs of heterosexual women undergraduate students: the role of traditional media and social media.

This study aimed to explore dysfunctional romantic beliefs among women undergraduate students and the meanings they attribute to romantic messages received from traditional media and social media. Using a qualitative research design, twenty heterosexual undergraduate women participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using content analysis, and findings were supported with participants' direct quotations to enhance interpretive depth. The findings indicated that participants perceived both traditional and social media as influential sources of messages about romance.

Depression, anxiety, stress, and resting blood pressure between cisgender queer and heterosexual emerging adults.

Hypertension (HTN) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Affecting ∼ 50% of adults in the general population, HTN has recently been found to be more prevalent in individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+). HTN in the LGBTQ+ community is hypothesized to be mediated by excessive levels of identity-dependent psychosocial stress, as posited in the Minority Stress Theory. Previous studies examining the relation of stress and blood pressure in LGBTQ+ populations have largely been retrospective or used self-report data. We implemented a sm

Disparities in food insecurity between sexual minority and heterosexual adults - a higher burden on bisexual individuals.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minorities-individuals who identify as gay/lesbian, bisexual, or other non-heterosexual individuals-experience higher rates of food insecurity (FI) compared to heterosexual individuals. During the COVID-19 pandemic, discrimination and structural racism, which are known risk factors for food insecurity, were perpetuated against sexual and racial/ethnic minorities. However, to our knowledge, a nationally representative analysis of the impact of the pandemic on food insecurity by sexual minority status and based on race/ethnicity is missing. We aimed to determine the degree of

Exploring What Influences Heterosexual College Men and the Practice of Safe Sex: The Power of Stigma and Community.

The college student population is among the highest risk group for contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV. Safe sex practices, which are intended to mitigate risks associated with sexually transmitted infections, are often negated in the population of heterosexual college students. Historically, research on safe sex practices has shown that the burden of behavior change and the focus on educational efforts historically fall onto the female population. There is little published on how safe sex education for males impacts attitudes and behaviors

The potential impact of a vaccine on Neisseria gonorrhoeae prevalence among heterosexuals living in a high prevalence setting.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of Neisseria gonorrhoeae is under threat with the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Thus, there is a growing interest in the development of a gonorrhoea vaccine. We used mathematical modelling to assess the impact of a hypothetical vaccine in controlling gonorrhoea among heterosexuals living in a setting of relatively high N. gonorrhoeae prevalence (∼3 %). METHODS: We developed a mathematical model of N. gonorrhoeae transmission among 15-49-year-old heterosexuals, stratified by age and sex, and calibrated to prevalence and sexual behaviour data from South

Heterosexual Oral and Anal Sex: Perceptions, Terminologies, and Attitudes of Younger and Older Adults in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Although heterosexual oral and anal sexual behaviors have been reported in sub-Saharan Africa, little is known about how they are understood and perceived, particularly, in West Africa. We undertook a qualitative exploration of local terminologies and sexual scripts associated with heterosexual oral and anal sex in preparation for a quantitative survey. We held focus group discussions (18) and interviews (44) with younger and middle-aged men and women from the general population and female sex workers (FSWs) in selected communities in Ibadan. Most participants had heard of oral and anal sex. Y

Disparity in depressive symptoms between heterosexual and sexual minority men in China: The role of social support.

Accumulating evidence suggests that sexual minorities experience elevated levels of depressive symptoms compared to heterosexuals in Western countries. Still, little is known about whether there is any difference in depressive symptoms between sexual minority men and heterosexual men in China. This study investigated the differences in depressive symptoms and social support between 302 Chinese sexual minority men and 249 heterosexual men. The association between depressive symptoms, social support and sexual orientation was also explored. Our results indicated that Chinese sexual minority men

Approach bias for erotic stimuli among heterosexual female college students who use pornography.

Repeated engagement in addictive behaviors may lead to relatively automatic action tendencies whereby individuals approach rather than avoid addictive stimuli. This study assessed whether an approach bias for erotic stimuli exists among heterosexual college-aged females who report using pornography. We tested 121 female undergraduates using an approach-avoidance task (AAT) employing both erotic and neutral stimuli, during which participants were instructed to push or pull a gaming joystick in response to image orientation. To simulate approach and avoidance movements, pulling the joystick enla

The Role of Interpersonal Sexual Objectification in Heterosexual Intimate Partner Violence From Perspectives of Perceivers and Targets.

Sexual objectification is a subtle manifestation of sexist discrimination and violence against women that involves seeing and treating women as sex objects of male sexual desire. The primary aim of this research was to connect sexual objectification experiences with heterosexual intimate partner violence. This set of studies examined the impact of sexual objectification on intimate partner violence for both the female victim (Study 1) and the male perpetrator (Study 2). Female (Study 1) and male (Study 2) participants were asked to rate the extent they are victims or perpetrators of sexual obj

Phylogenetic clustering networks among heterosexual migrants with new HIV diagnoses post-migration in Australia.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that approximately half of new HIV diagnoses among heterosexual migrants in Victoria, Australia, were acquired post-migration. We investigated the characteristics of phylogenetic clusters in notified cases of HIV among heterosexual migrants. METHODS: Partial HIV pol sequences obtained from routine clinical genotype tests were linked to Victorian HIV notifications with the following exposures listed on the notification form: heterosexual sexual contact, injecting drug use, bisexual sexual contact, male-to male sexual contact or heterosexual sexual contact in combina
