BACKGROUND: Hordeum vulgare L (barley) contains numerous phenolic substances with proven anticancer, antioxidant and gastroprotective activities. Saccharification increases the functionality and bioavailability of these compounds thus can aid in the development of a natural product based medicine. This study aimed to investigate the possible gastroprotective effects of saccharification on the indomethacin (IND)-induced gastric ulcers in rats using Weissella cibaria- and Saccharomyces cerevisiae-triple fermented H. vulgare extract (FBe).
METHODS: In total, 60 healthy male 6-week old Sprague-Da…

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) leaf stripe is caused by the seed-borne fungus Pyrenophora graminea. We investigated microscopically and molecularly the reaction of barley embryos to leaf stripe inoculation. In the resistant genotype NIL3876-Rdg2a, fungal growth ceased at the scutellar node of the embryo, while in the susceptible near-isogenic line (NIL) Mirco-rdg2a fungal growth continued past the scutellar node and into the embryo. Pathogen-challenged embryos of resistant and susceptible NILs showed different levels of UV autofluorescence and toluidine blue staining, indicating differential accu…

Multi-population GWAS lead to identification of common and population-specific QTLs for leaf rust resistance in barley. Genome-wide associat … h such discrepancies may result from differences in statistical power to detect signals. In barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), where genetic leaf rust resistance is rapidly overcome by evolving pathogens, identification of cross-population robust and potentially transferable resistance loci is a key task. Here, we present a mixed model approach for multi-popula …

Changes in atmospheric CO2 are known to influence plant physiology, subsequently affecting the nature of their interactions with their biotic environment. Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), one of the most widespread and damaging viruses of small grains, is transmitted by cereal aphids and has a broad range of cultivated and uncultivated hosts from the Poaceae family. Here, we examined the effects of elevated CO2 on plant physiology, Rhopalosiphum padi L. performance, and the accumulation of BYDV (strain BYDV-PAV) in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum L.), and …

One of the most important effects of climatic changes is increasing temperatures and expanding water deficit stress in tropical and subtropical regions. As the fourth most important cereal crop, barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is crucial for food and feed security, as well as for a sustainable agricultural system. The present study investigates 56 promising barley genotypes, along with four local varieties (Norooz, Oxin, Golchin, and Negin) in four locations to identify high-yielding and adapted genotypes in the warm climate of Iran. Genotypes were tested in an alpha lattice design with six blocks…

Soluble salts, nutrients, and pathogenic bacteria in feedlot-pen runoff have the potential to cause pollution of the environment. A 2-yr study (1998-1999) was conducted at a beef cattle (Bos taurus) feedlot in southern Alberta, Canada, to determine the effect of bedding material [barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) straw versus wood chips] and within-pen location on the chemical and bacterial properties of pen-floor runoff. Runoff was generated with a portable rainfall simulator and analyzed for chemical content (nitrogen [N], phosphorus [P], soluble salts, electrical conductivity [EC], sodium adsorpt…

We identified digenic control of leaf variegation in a barley mutant. Candidate genes, identified through whole-genome resequencing, are consistent with possible roles in chloroplast proteostasis. Variegation mutants provide valuable insights into chloroplast biogenesis. We characterized a newly identified variegated barley mutant, in which the phenotype is controlled by two epistatic recessive genes. The causal loci, var4 and var5, were mapped on chromosomes 2H and 3H. We used genotyping-by-sequencing, linkage mapping, and PACE genotyping, followed by whole-genome resequencing to identify can

Plant intracellular immune receptors are widely deployed in breeding to protect crops from disease. In addition to nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat receptors (NLRs), tandem kinase proteins (TKPs) have recently emerged as an important family of immune receptors within staple cereal food crops, but how TKPs recognize effectors and whether they are amenable to engineering is essentially unknown. Here, we show that the barley and wheat TKPs Rmo2 and Rwt7 recognize different blast fungus effectors via their integrated HMA domains using different protein interfaces with nanomolar binding affin

RNA interference (RNAi) is emerging as a powerful technology to potentially protect wheat and barley crops from plant viruses such as Luteovirus pashordei, historicaly known as barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), and insect/vector pest infestation. The induction of the RNAi mechanism by the spray on delivery of double-stranded (ds) RNAs that display homology to vital genes encoding virus movement protein, coat protein and other genes related to the virus-plant or virus-vector interaction can lead to limiting virus infection and replication as well as its transmission by aphid vectors. INTRODUCTION: Limited use of medication in poultry feed led to the investigation of exogenous enzymes as antibiotic alternatives for controlling enteric disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of diet β-glucanase (BGase) and medication on β-glucan depolymerization, digestive tract characteristics, and growth performance of broilers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Broilers were fed hulless barley (HB) based diets with BGase (Econase GT 200P from AB Vista; 0 and 0.1%) and medication (Bacitracin and Salinomycin Na; with and without) arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial. In Experiment 1

Celiac disease (CD) is triggered by ingestion of gluten-containing cereals such as wheat, barley, rye and in some cases oat. The only way for affected individuals to avoid symptoms of this condition is to adopt a gluten-free diet. Thus, gluten-free foodstuffs need to be monitored in order to ensure their innocuity. For this purpose, commercial immunoassays based on recognition of defined linear gluten sequences are currently used. These immunoassays are designed to detect or quantify total gluten regardless of the cereal, and often result in over or underestimation of the exact gluten content.

BACKGROUND: Aspiration of grass inflorescences is an extremely rare phenomenon with potential diagnostic difficulties. Due to its special shape, each coughing and respiratory action helps its migration towards the periphery of lung, resulting late-onset, life-threatening complications. The diagnosis has some difficulties for the reason that soon after the aspiration initial symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing or vomiting disappear and bronchoscopy is mostly negative. At least serious complications such as tension pneumothorax, bronchopleurocutaneous fistula or even spontaneous percutan elimin

The cholesterol-lowering effect of barley β-glucan has been proposed to be the result of a pleiotropic effect, which involves several biological mechanisms such as gut fermentation, inhibition of intestinal cholesterol absorption and increased bile acid excretion and its synthesis. However, one of the recent studies from our laboratory indicated that increased bile acid excretion and subsequent increase in its synthesis, but not the inhibition of cholesterol absorption or synthesis might be responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effect of barley β-glucan. Accordingly, the primary objective o

The available immunomethods for gluten quantitation could underestimate or overestimate the net immunoactivity of foods and beverages if the chosen analytical antibody is not specific to the relevant gluten immunogenic peptides (GIP). Accurate detection of the most active GIP is desirable to assess the potential celiac toxicity of food. We evaluated the capacity of the G12 monoclonal antibody for selectively depleting GIP in samples from two different gluteomes. Samples of hydrolyzed gliadin from wheat and a barley beer were used. The input (starting peptide digest of prolamins), the flow-thro

UNLABELLED: Consumers, especially those with allergies and/or intolerances, should have confidence in two critical areas of food safety: foods should be correctly labelled and free from contamination. To this end, global proteomic analysis employing LC-MS/MS of gluten-enriched extracts derived from 12 barley cultivars was undertaken, providing a foundation for the development of MS-based quantitative methodologies that would enable the detection of barley contamination in foods. Subsequently, a number of candidate barley-specific peptide markers were evaluated by multiple-reaction monitoring M

The syntheses of two selenium analogues (10 and 11) of the naturally occurring sulfonium ion, salacinol (3), are described. Salacinol is one of the active principles in the aqueous extracts of Salacia reticulata that are traditionally used in Sri Lanka and India for the treatment of diabetes. The synthetic strategy relies on the nucleophilic attack of a 2,3,5-tri-O-benzyl-1,4-anhydro-4-seleno-D-arabinitol at the least hindered carbon of benzyl- or benzylidene-protected D- or L-erythritol-1,3-cyclic sulfate. Nine midlactation dairy cows were offered one of three mixed silage rations with neutral detergent fiber (NDF) that was similar in concentration but different in fermentability. Differences in fermentability were achieved by substituting a high quality alfalfa silage for a low quality alfalfa silage and substituting a combination of ryegrass and timothy silages for a barley silage. In addition, concentrate was allocated at 0.30, 0.82, or 1.37 kg of dry matter/kg of dry matter intake (DMI) from the mixed silage ration. As expected, the NDF content of the mixed silage ration did not differ, alth
