Hormones and sexual differentiation of the brain.

Male rats castrated on the first day of life exhibited predominantly heterotypical (homosexual) behaviour after androgen substitution in adu … erentiation may be mediated, at least in part, by neurotransmitters, which may be regarded as local hormones of the brain. Interestingly enough, we have found permanent abnormalities of mating and other non-mating behaviour associated with permanent structural and chemical alterations in discrete brain regions of rats after neonatal treatment with psychotr …

Modification of murine lupus by sex hormones.

The effects of pre- and post-pubertal castration and testosterone administration on the course of murine lupus were studied in NZB/W F1 mice. Castration of males worsened their disease, whereas testosterone treatment of females ameliorated their autoimmune syndrome. Pre-pubertal treatment with testosterone caused a significant reduction in anti-DNA antibodies; in contrast, post-pubertal treatment had no effect, suggesting an age-dependent maturational event which is hormone-dependent. Finally, intact females were found to respond to testosterone treatment with prolonged survival, even when tre

Calcium-regulating hormones during the menstrual cycle.

Calcium metabolism during the menstrual cycle was studied in seven women from whom fasting blood samples were drawn daily or every other day … radiol level. These results represent the first report of menstrual cyclicity in calcium-regulating hormones. The timing suggest an estrogen effect and it is hypothesized that estrogen inhibits PTH-induced bone resorption, lowering serum Ca++, which in turn provokes a compensatory PTH output. With the decline of the preovulatory estrogen peak, Ca++ levels …

[Use of releasing hormones in endocrinological diagnosis].

The identification and synthesis of thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (TRH) and luteinising hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) has widened our knowledge of hypothalamo-hypophyseal-thyroid and hypothalamo-hypophyseal-gonad diseases. More precisely, administration of these two releasing factors, by permitting the evaluation of pituitary TSH, LH, and FSH reserves, reveals otherwise undefinable changes in hypophyseal function. An account of the manner of execution and measurement, the administration route, and side-effects related to TRH and LHRH tests is followed by a description of the main diseases

Hormones and the pathophysiology of fibrocystic mastopathy.

There is some reason to believe that common benign diseases of the breast are in great part caused by abnormalities of the hormonal milieu in which the breasts exist. Relative hyperestrinism by itself may cause mammary dysplasia, but it is likely that etiologic contributions are required from genetic factors within the cells of the mammary gland, from abnormalities of pituitary mammotropic hormone activity and from surplus or deficit of other circulating nongonadal factors.

Treatment of testicular hypofunction with gonadotrophic hormones.

The paper reports on the response to gonadotrophic hormone treatment in cases of male infertility. The report includes 119 cases treated bet … ause of the relatively small number of patients treated with Pergonal. Treatment with gonadotrophic hormones, especially Pergonal 500, seems to be indicated in cases of oligoasthenospermia, hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (or secondary hypogonadism) and at least a short-dated correction of the spermiogram to normal can be expected in approximately one fourt …

Exogenous hormones, reproductive history, and breast cancer.

We studied 284 patients (20-74 years of age) with carcinoma of the breast and 367 controls; all were admitted to one hospital between 1969 and 1972. The disease was associated with nulliparity, first pregnancy over 20 years of age, premenopausal status, and a lower frequency of artificial menopause. After adjustment for these factors, no significant difference was found between the breast cancer patients and controls in their prior use of either estrogens or oral contraceptives, but the confidence limits on the relative risk, especially for oral contraceptives, were large.
