Diabetes and hypertension among South Asians in New York and Atlanta leveraging hospital electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes and hypertension disparities are pronounced among South Asians. There is regional variation in the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension in the US, but it is unknown whether there is variation among South Asians living in the US. The objective of this study was to compare the burden of diabetes and hypertension between South Asian patients receiving care in the health systems of two US cities. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses were performed using electronic health records (EHR) for 90,137 South Asians receiving care at New York University Langone in New York City (NYC)

[The accuracy of hospital discharge records and their use in identifying and staging chronic kidney disease].

Administrative databases contain precious information that can support the identification of specific pathologies. Specifically, chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients could be identified using hospital discharge records (HDR); these should contain information on the CKD stage using subcategories of the ICD9-CM classification's 585 code (subcategories can be expressed just by adding a fourth digit to this code). To verify the accuracy of HDR data regarding the coding of CKD collected in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, we analyzed the HDR records of patients enrolled in the PIRP project, whic

Prevalence of malignant hyperthermia diagnosis in hospital discharge records in California, Florida, New York, and Wisconsin.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare yet potentially fatal pharmacogenetic disorder triggered by exposure to inhalational anesthetics and the depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent succinylcholine. Epidemiologic data on the geographic variation in MH prevalence is scant. The objective of this study is to examine the prevalence of recorded MH diagnosis in patients discharged from hospitals in four states in the United States. DESIGN: Observational study. SETTING: Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) State Inpatient Database (SID) for California (2011), Florida (

Twin birth and adult psychiatric disorder. An examination of the case records of the Maudsley Hospital.

We compared the general distribution of diagnoses in 20,895 patients at the Maudsley Hospital with that of 504 patients born twins, including 117 twins where the co-twin had died before the age of 15. Significant differences in diagnostic distribution were found in the co-twin-dead compared with the co-twin-alive group; the former received diagnoses of schizophrenia, personality disorder, or substance abuse more often than the latter. While there were no overall differences between twins and non-twins, there were relatively more twins in the above three diagnostic groups. We suggest that the f

[Comparison of data from registries of acute coronary syndromes RECORD and RECORD-2: management of patients and its results in noninvasive hospitals].

Positive changes are declared to occur during recent years in management of hospitalized patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in Russia. Most of these changes are related to availability of invasive treatment. But considerable portion of patients (pts) are still treated in hospitals without facilities for invasive myocardial revascularization (noninvasive hospitals - NIHs). Aim of this study was to compare some characteristics of management of ACS in NIHs which participated in ACS registries RECORD (2007-2008, 8 NIHs from 6 cities; n=381) and RECORD-2 (2009-2011, 3 NIHs from 3 cities,

[Use of pension records for occupational health surveillance: example of record-linkage with hospital discharge records to study the association between work and the incidence of leukaemias, lung and bladder cancer, and miscarriage].

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic surveillance of occupational health based on routinely collected data allows groups of workers to be studied, whose type of work (e.g. small enterprises, self-employed workers, artisans) makes it difficult to use a traditional cohort study design. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the validity of a study design based on the record-linkage between hospital discharge records and INPS social security records (National Institute for Social Security), in order to investigate the association between past employment in an economic sector and occurrence of diseases with a low fraction

Prediction of in-hospital hypokalemia using machine learning and first hospitalization day records in patients with traumatic brain injury.

AIMS: Hypokalemia is a common complication following traumatic brain injury, which may complicate treatment and lead to unfavorable outcomes. Identifying patients at risk of hypokalemia on the first day of admission helps to implement prophylactic treatment, reduce complications, and improve prognosis. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study was performed between January 2017 and December 2020 using the electronic medical records of patients admitted due to traumatic brain injury. A propensity score matching approach was adopted with a ratio of 1:1 to overcome overfitting and data imbal

Evaluating the Feasibility of Clinical Studies on Cleft Lip and Palate Patients Based on the Hospital Records.

BACKGROUND: Policy makers, researchers and health care professionals are faced daily with the challenge of how to prioritize their activities and actions in different areas of their responsibilities. In the field of health, their decisions are often influenced by the reality of population needs on the one hand and limited resources on the other. The correctness of decisions is completely dependent on the quality and accuracy of information from the target population. Patient registries, have for decades been an important source of data needed to evaluate clinical practice, evaluate health serv

Introduction of partographic records in a District Hospital in Zambia and development of nomograms of cervical dilatation.

Partographic records of labour have been successfully introduced in a district hospital in Zambia. Nomograms of cervical dilatation show no significant difference compared to those obtained by other workers in other parts of the world. There was no difference in the duration of the active phase of the 1st stage of labour between multiparous patients (para 1--4) and grand multiparous patients (para greater than 4).

Stroke mortality in patients with mental health disorders; a cohort study from the Spanish hospital discharge records.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence on the clinical outcomes of stroke for patients with psychiatric disorders is poor. It is also unclear if the prognosis of stroke has improved over the last two decades for those with mental health conditions. The aims of this study are first, to compare the hospital mortality between 2019 and 2023 of stroke for patients with and without depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar, or personality disorders, and second, to investigate whether the stroke mortality in 2019-2023 is lower than in 2005-2009, for those with psychiatric conditions. METHODS: Data from all stroke

High speed internet and the widening gender gap in adolescent mental health: Evidence from Spanish hospital records.

We exploit variations in fiber optic (FTTH) deployment to assess the impact of high-speed internet access on adolescent mental health. Our findings reveal that FTTH access increases addictive Internet usage and reduces time allocated to sleep, homework, as well as social interactions with family and friends. Access to FTTH increases mental health diagnoses in hospitals and contributes to a notable rise in adolescent suicide rates, particularly among girls. As new platforms and apps gain traction among adolescents, understanding the impact of connectivity improvement becomes important. This is

Predicting In-Hospital Fall Risk Using Machine Learning With Real-Time Location System and Electronic Medical Records.

BACKGROUND: Hospital falls are the most prevalent and fatal event in healthcare, posing significant risks to patient health outcomes and institutional care quality. Real-time location system (RTLS) enables continuous tracking of patient location, providing a unique opportunity to monitor changes in physical activity, a key factor related to the risk of falls in hospitals. This study is aimed at utilizing RTLS data to capture dynamic patient movements, integrating it with clinical information through a machine learning approach to enhance in-hospital fall predictions. METHODS: This retrospecti

Male hysteria in theory and practice: Analyzing patient records of the Tartu Psychiatric Hospital (Estonia), 1881-1895.

During 1881-1895, a small number of male patients-18 in total-were diagnosed with hysteria at the University of Tartu Psychiatric Hospital. Rather than constituting an obscure psychiatric institution on the margins of European medical traditions, Tartu during these years witnessed the arrival of several influential psychiatrists: Hermann Emminghaus (1845-1904), Emil Kraepelin (1856-1926), and Vladimir Chizh (1855-1922). Yet, when comparing patient case records of male hysteria written by doctors who also published journal articles and medical textbooks on the topic, one can detect a clear inco
