Yeasts recovered from wastewater of a public hospital in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, included a single isolate representing a putative novel species. Sequence analysis of the ITS-5.8S region and the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene placed this yeast within the genus Sungouiella, close to Sungouiella thailandica. Phylogenomic inference based on 1,849 single-copy orthologues from Sungouiella species with available genomes confirmed that strain UFMG-CM-Y7468 forms a distinct lineage with S. thailandica as its closest known relative. The name Sungouiella purgamenti sp. nov. (MycoBank MB 863665)

Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) results from the dissemination of Streptococcus pneumoniae to normally sterile anatomical sites such as the bloodstream or cerebrospinal fluid. One of the primary roles of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) used in Romania is to reduce the burden of pneumococcal disease. This single-center retrospective study provides an updated overview of IPD epidemiology in a Romanian tertiary hospital. We analyzed 67 IPD cases identified between 2017 and 2023, of which 45 isolates underwent whole-genome sequencing followed by multilocus sequence typing. Results of ge

BACKGROUND: Aerococcus urinae is a potential causative pathogen of urinary tract infections in pediatric patients with underlying nephrological or urinary tract disorders. However, the need for targeted antimicrobial therapy remains controversial. Herein, we evaluated pediatric patients in whom A. urinae was identified in urine cultures and compared the clinical outcomes between those who received antimicrobial therapy and those managed with observation alone.
METHODS: Urine cultures submitted from 2018 to 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Cases were included if A. urinae was cultured at ≥

INTRODUCTION: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is an opportunistic pathogen frequently associated with multidrug-resistant nosocomial infections. The MexAB-OprM efflux system, a member of the Resistance-Nodulation-Division (RND) family, contributes to intrinsic and acquired resistance by extruding structurally diverse antimicrobial agents, including quinolones, from the bacterial cell.
AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the association between quinolone resistance phenotypes and the presence of the mexAB-oprM determinant in clinical P. aeruginosa isolates, and to assess the functional co

BACKGROUND: Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a nosocomial infection involving hospitalized patients using mechanical ventilation. The endotracheal tube is a place for colonizing microbial populations and subsequent biofilm formation, leading to relative drug resistance. Also, the hospital environment may worsen the infection. This study aims to identify the microbial cause of the infection and evaluate its characteristics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sampling was done using endotracheal tube suction among hospitalized patients and from different places in intensive care units in selected hospita

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii is an alarming pathogen in hospital-acquired infections, particularly in the intensive care units (ICUs). Carbapenemases production and biofilm formation contribute significantly to the pathogenicity of the organism. Carbapenem resistance in A. baumannii is primarily due to the production of carbapenemases.
AIM: The study was conducted to detect the presence of carbapenemase-encoding genes in A. baumannii along with their ability to form biofilm. In addition, this study also investigated the association between biofilm formation and carbapenemase genes harb

BACKGROUND: The Enterobacteriaceae family is the most heterogeneous group of Gram-negative bacilli, with both environmental and clinical relevance. Although many of these species are part of the normal intestinal microbiota, species such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis are among the most common opportunistic pathogens, frequently responsible for nosocomial infections, including urinary tract infections, bacteraemia, and pneumonia. Based on these concerns, these species are increasingly being studied for their ability to develop antimicrobial resistance, often

INTRODUCTION: Acinetobacter baumannii is endemic in hospital environments, and since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, multidrug-resistant A. baumannii has become more potent. This potential evolution is driven by the undetectable numbers of gene resistances it has acquired. We evaluated the antibiotic-resistance genes in isolates from patients in Erbil hospitals.
METHODOLOGY: This is the first study to demonstrate the antimicrobial resistance epidemic in Erbil, Iraq. A total of 570 patients, including 100 COVID-19 patients were tested. Isolate identification, characterization
