Yaws is a neglected tropical disease targeted for eradication by 2030. To achieve eradication, finding and treating asymptomatic infections as well as clinical cases is crucial. The proposed plan, the Morges strategy, involves rounds of total community treatment (i.e., treating the whole population) and total targeted treatment (TTT) (i.e., treating clinical cases and contacts). However, modeling and empirical work suggests asymptomatic infections often are not found in the same households as clinical cases, reducing the utility of household-based contact tracing for a TTT strategy. BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease in which the personal environment seems to drive a differentiated disease frequency and clinical expression. The main epidemiological studies suggest a key influence of potential environmentally linked exposures related to the type of occupation, the household, life style, socioeconomic status, and region of residence.
OBJECTIVE: To provide an update on how sarcoidosis may be modulated by environmental factors.
DATA SOURCES: We searched PubMed for epidemiological studies.
SYNTHESIS: The risk of sarcoidosis is enhanced in people working in jobs r

INTRODUCTION: Young women with limited education who migrate from rural to urban areas in Uganda for household domestic work face multiple, intersecting vulnerabilities that increase their risk of sexual violence and other forms of exploitation. These vulnerabilities are often shaped by economic dependence, limited social support, and unequal power dynamics within households. This study explored their lived experiences, perceptions, barriers, and facilitators to accessing support following sexual violence.
METHODS: Within a community-based cross-sectional study, we conducted a qualitative stu

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). In Germany, labor market volatility, compounded by record inflation, widened social inequalities and contributed to a gradient in mental health. This study examines the relationship between household income and mental health before, during, and after the pandemic in the German working population, addressing whether mental health burdens persisted post-pandemic.
METHODS: Using the German Socioeconomic

BACKGROUND: In India, 50% of women of reproductive age, compared with 23% of men, have iron deficiency anemia. Extant research focuses on biological, not social, determinants of this disparity.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine how gender norms may affect anemia prevalence among women in rural India.
METHODS: We conducted 16 focus group discussions (N = 124) with women of reproductive age, husbands, and mothers-in-law and 25 key informant interviews in four villages in Odisha, India.
RESULTS: We identified the following themes that help explain how inequitable gender norms ex

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases. However, recent and systematically obtained national-level data to guide policy responses are often lacking, especially in countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. This article describes physical inactivity patterns among adults in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
METHODS: Data were collected using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire drawing nationally representative samples of adults in each country. The national prevalenc

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is associated with productivity losses exceeding US$13 billion annually. Although pain is well known to significantly affect patient productivity in other diseases, its economic impact on CRS-related lost productivity has not been examined. The objective of this study was to determine whether CRS-related facial pain correlates with lost productivity in patients with CRS.
METHODS: Seventy patients with CRS were enrolled in a cross-sectional investigation. Patients with a history of systemic inflammatory disease, ciliary dysfunction, chronic pain syndrom

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder with/without agoraphobia (PD/PDA) is a prevalent anxiety disorder, associated with impairment in quality of life and functionality, as well as increased healthcare utilization. Extant research shows a relationship between stressful life events (SLEs) and the onset of panic attacks in adults who ultimately develop PD/PDA. However, limited attention has been paid to how SLEs might affect the severity of panic symptoms in individuals with PD/PDA. In this study, we examined the relationship between SLEs and panic symptom severity in adults with PD/PDA.

Clubfoot is a congenital anomaly affecting 1/1,000 live births. Ponseti casting is an effective and affordable treatment. About 75% of affected children have access to Ponseti treatment in Bangladesh, but 20% are at risk of drop-out. We aimed to identify the areas in Bangladesh where patients are at high or low risk for drop-out. This study used a cross-sectional design based on publicly available data. The nationwide clubfoot program: 'Walk for Life' identified five risk factors for drop-out from the Ponseti treatment, specific to the Bangladeshi setting: household poverty, household size, po

Depression in the elderly is an important social issue considering the population aging of the world. In particular, elderly living alone who has narrowed social relationship due to bereavement and retirement are more prone to be depressed. Long-term depressed mood can be a precursor to eventual depression as a disease. Our goal is how to predict the depressed mood of single household elderly from unobtrusive monitoring of their daily life. We have selected a wearable band with multiple sensors for monitoring elderly people. Depression questionnaire has been surveyed periodically to be used as

A survey was carried out in a Malay-speaking Muslim community in southern Thailand to obtain baseline data for planning of long term multidisciplinary research and development. By using a 30-cluster sampling technique, 210 households of 1,308 subjects were studied in the post-Ramadan period. It was found that the community was in a social transition. The crude birth rate was 4% and 37.6% of the households had at least one migrant. About half of these migrants had been to Malaysia and mainly worked in rubber plantations. Ninety-five per cent of the households had electricity whereas only 23.8%

This study tried to understand the association between exposure to indoor air pollution and angina among the aging population in India. We utilized the data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) Wave-1 (2017-2018), with a sample of 62,846 aging adults. We applied Chi-square and multivariate logistic regression models. The odds of angina were higher among individuals living in households that used solid fuels for cooking (aOR = 1.15, 99% CI- 1.09-1.20), had someone smoked inside the house (aOR = 1.12, 99% CI- 1.07-1.18), and households that used of incenses inside the home (aOR = 1

Recent research has approached contraceptive use, or "fertility work", as another household task that is primarily managed by women. Building on the theoretical frameworks of relative resource theory and gender perspectives, this study investigates the association between partners' power (measured as their relative education, division of housework and decision-making) and the choice of male versus female, or no contraception. Data from the Generations and Gender Survey for four Western European countries (Austria, Belgium, France and Germany; 2005-2010) are used to examine the hypotheses with
