AIMS: The purpose of this study was to analyse the effects of siderophore-producing bacteria and bacterial siderophore on the iron nutrition of apple rootstocks under iron-deficient conditions.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We isolated three Pseudomonas strains, SP1, SP2 and SP3 from the rhizosphere of the Fe-efficient apple rootstocks using the chrome azurol S agar plate assay. We found that all three strains had the ability to secrete indole acetic acid-like compounds and siderophores, especially SP3. When Fe-inefficient rootstocks treated with SP3 were grown in alkaline soil, an increase in the bio

Application of exogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a novel strategy for alleviation of the adverse effects caused by abiotic stresses. However, little is known about H2S-mediated global molecular response of rice seedlings to thiocyanate (SCN-) exposure. Herein, a hydroponic experiment was carried out to investigate the crucial role of exogenous H2S in alleviation of SCN- toxicity generated at different effective concentrations (EC20: 24.0 mg SCN/L, EC50: 96.0 mg SCN/L, and EC75: 300.0 mg SCN/L) in rice seedlings through transcriptome analysis. The results showed that the total numbers of diff

Pistia stratiotes is a cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulating plant with strong bioaccumulation and translocation capacity for Cd. A hydroponic experiment was used to evaluate the combined effect of Zinc (Zn) and Cd at different concentrations on leaf growth and metabolism of P. stratiotes. This study revealed the physiological defense and metabolic strategy of responses to Zn-Cd co-pollution. With the Zn50Cd1, Zn50Cd10, Zn100Cd1, and Zn100Cd10 treatments for 9 d, the relative crown diameter, relative leave number, and ramet number of the plant had no significant difference with the control. Nanoplastics (NPs) have attracted great attention as an emerging pollution. To date, their interaction with biological systems has been studied mostly by using fluorescent-labeled NPs, which suffered from serious drawbacks such as biological autofluorescence interference and false-positive results. Reliable optically labeled NP models are eagerly desired until now. Herein, a novel near-infrared (NIR) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) labeled NP model was proposed, which gained single-particle ultra-sensitivity, deep tissue detection, multiplex labeling ability, and anti-interference pro

Arsenic (As) pollution can lead to an element imbalance in rice. A hydroponic study was carried out to examine the influence of inorganic (arsenate) and organic (dimethylarsinic acid (DMA)) arsenic compounds on the concentration and distribution of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) in rice caryopsis at maturity using laser confocal microscopy and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF). Results showed that treatments with inorganic (iAs) and organic (DMA) arsenic did not change the distribution characteristics of the above el

Surfactants are widely used detergent ingredients and, thanks to their chemical properties, they are applied for remediation of sites polluted by heavy metals and organic contaminants, both in soil flushing and in phytoremediation. However, their direct effects on tree physiology especially in consociation with heavy metal pollution, as well as their possible absorption by plants, have not been appropriately investigated. In order to evaluate plant uptake/translocation of the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the heavy metal zinc (Zn) in Populus alba L. Villafranca clone, SDS was app

Plants produce strigolactones (SLs) in roots in response to nitrogen or phosphate deficiency. To evaluate SL levels under other mineral deficiencies in rice, we cultivated rice seedlings in hydroponic media without nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Tiller bud outgrowth was stimulated under calcium deficiency because of low SL levels. SL levels increased under sulfur deficiency, in addition to phosphate, and nitrogen deficiencies. To explore which genes are key regulators of SL production under sulfur deficiency, we analyzed the expression of SL-related gene

Most arsenic in surface soil and water exists primarily in its oxidized form, as arsenate (As(V); AsO43-), which is an analog of phosphate (PO43-). Arsenate can be taken up by phosphate transporters. Atriplex atacamensis Phil. is native to northern Chile (Atacama Desert), and this species can cope with high As concentrations and low P availability in its natural environment. To determine the impact of P on As accumulation and tolerance in A. atacamensis, the plants were cultivated in a hydroponic system under four treatments: no As(V) addition with 323µM phosphate (control); 1000µM As(V) addit

Arsenic (As) is a toxic element for plants and one of the most common anthropogenic pollutants found at contaminated sites. Despite its severe effects on plant metabolism, several species can accumulate substantial amounts of arsenic and endure the associated stress. However, the genetic mechanisms involved in arsenic tolerance remains obscure in many model plant species used for land decontamination (phytoremediation), including willows. The present study assesses the potential of Salix purpurea cv. 'Fish Creek' for arsenic phytoextraction and reveals the genetic responses behind arsenic tole

Toxic metal-contaminated water is a major threat to sustainable agriculture and environment. Plants have the natural ability to absorb and concentrate essential elements in its tissues from water solution, and this ability of plants can be exploited to remove heavy/toxic metals from the contaminated water. For this purpose, two plants Veronica anagallis-aquatica and Epilobium laxum were hydroponically studied. The effect of different fertilizers (NPK) and plant growth regulators (GA3 and IAA) were evaluated on growth, biomass, free proline, phenolics, and chlorophyll contents, and their role i

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is a valuable forage crop in regions with low soil moisture. Sorghum may accumulate high concentrations of the cyanogenic glucoside dhurrin when drought stressed resulting in possible cyanide (HCN) intoxication of grazing animals. In addition, high concentrations of nitrate, also potentially toxic to ruminants, may accumulate during or shortly after periods of drought. Little is known about the degree and duration of drought-stress required to induce dhurrin accumulation, or how changes in dhurrin concentration are influenced by plant size or nitrate metabol

Understanding the effects of root Fe deficiency on the uptake and translocation of toxic metals can be important for improving the phytoremediation strategies of polluted soils. The present study investigated how Fe nutritional status affects the uptake and root-to-shoot-translocation of Pb in hydroponically grown seedlings of (Mill.) Swingle. The interactions of Fe deficiency and Pb were assessed by measuring the root Fe(III) reductase activity, carboxylic acids concentration in root exudates, root and shoot biomass, and accumulation of Pb and other metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu) in roots and le

Tumbleweed (Salsola kali) is a desert plant species that has shown to be a potential Cd hyperaccumulator. In this study, the production of low-molecular weight thiols (LMWT) as a response to cadmium stress was determined in hydroponically grown seedlings exposed to 0, 45, 89, and 178 microM Cd(2+). The treatment of 89 microM Cd(2+) was tested alone and supplemented with an equimolar concentration of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to determine the effect of this chelating agent on Cd uptake and thiols production. After 6 days of growth, the Cd concentration in plant tissues was determin

The effects of in vivo copper on the lipid composition of root plasma membrane and the activities of membrane-bound enzymes, such as NADPH-dependent oxidases and lipoxygenase, were studied. Plants were grown in hydroponic culture for 11 d without Cu supply or in the presence of 50 microM Cu. Control plants were supplied with 0.3 microM Cu. Growth of roots was severely affected in the 50 microM Cu-grown plants, whereas roots grown in Cu-deficient solution did not show any difference in comparison with the control. The 50 microM Cu concentration caused an increase in the leakage of K(+) ions as

This study evaluated the potential of high photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) from high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, alone or in combination with metal halide (MH) plus quartz iodide (QI) incandescent lamps, to support lettuce growth, with or without N supplementation. Varying exposures to radiation from combined HPS, MH, and QI lamps influenced dry weight gain and photosynthetic pigment content of hydroponically grown Black-Seeded Simpson' lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings. Cumulative leaf dry weight declined with increasing exposure, up to 20 hours per day, to 660 micromoles m-2 s-1 of pho

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea var "Yates") plants in hydroponic culture were exposed to stepwise increased concentrations of NaCl or NaNO(3) up to a final concentration of 300 millimoles per liter, at constant Ca(2+)-concentration. Leaf cell sap and extracts from aqueously isolated spinach chloroplasts were analyzed for mineral cations, anions, amino acids, sugars, and quarternary ammonium compounds. Total osmolality of leaf sap and photosynthetic capacity of leaves were also measured. For comparison, leaf sap from salt-treated pea plants was also analyzed. Spinach plants under NaCl or NaNO(3) sa

The discovery of phytotoxic compounds remains essential for the development of next-generation herbicides. Here, we investigated the physiological effects of 2-naphthoic acid on maize, a model species with C4 photosynthesis, and complemented this analysis with germination assays in maize and four agronomically relevant weed species to assess interspecific variation in sensitivity and its potential as a lead compound for herbicide discovery. Maize plants were cultivated for 14 days under hydroponic conditions, with 2-naphthoic acid supplied through the nutrient solution. Exposure severely impai

Emergent macrophytes are key components in the phytoremediation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-contaminated wastewaters, yet comparative evidence on species-specific bioaccumulation and metabolic strategies remains scarce. Here, four typical emergent plants (Juncus effusus (Je), Cyperus alternifolius (Ca), Canna indica (Ci), and Iris tectorum Maxim. (It)) were chosen for PFAS hydroponic experiments. Among the four species, Ca exhibited the highest PFAS concentrations in both roots and shoots (19909.41 ± 45.76 ng/g and 11561.24 ± 97.78 ng/g), correlated with its highest total roo

Alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (alkylated PAHs) are prevalent environmental contaminants, potentially exhibiting toxicity comparable to unsubstituted PAHs. Through systematic plant exposure experiments, this study investigated the transformation of alkylated PAHs, using 5-methylchrysene (CHR-5Me) as a model compound in pumpkin and ryegrass. By leveraging isotope-labeled and unlabeled standards to generate characteristic ion pairs, alongside high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) non-target screening and quantum chemical calculations, we effectively characterized the metabolic pat

Terrestrial and amphibious plants frequently encounter severe oxygen deficiency in waterlogged environments. While the impacts of nutrient and water availability on root development are well documented, how underground oxygen status drives the spatial configuration of root systems remains poorly understood. In the present study, we used a custom hydroponic system to impose three dissolved oxygen treatments corresponding to 5%, 50%, and 100% air saturation and investigated the spatial rooting responses of Alternanthera philoxeroides. Our results demonstrated that low oxygen levels significantly
