An Increase in Tryptase on the First Day of Hymenoptera Venom Immunotherapy Might Be a Predictor of Future Systemic Reactions During Treatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Serum tryptase (ST) decreases during long-term venom immunotherapy (VIT). ST also exhibits a circadian variation, with a small decrease after sting challenge. Both findings have been related to successful VIT. Objective: To assess whether variation (increase or decrease) in ST on the first day of VIT is associated with the likelihood of future systemic adverse reactions (SARs) during treatment. METHODS: We prospectively studied patients who underwent cluster VIT, which was continued for at least 6 months. ST was measured on the first day of VIT, before the first dose

Chemical and behavioural studies of the trail-following pheromone in the leaf-cutting ant Atta opaciceps, Borgmeier (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

To understand the significance of the trail pheromone used in chemical communication of the leaf-cutting ants Atta opaciceps we investigated, under laboratory conditions, the trail-following behaviour of different castes. We observed a clear behavioural discrimination of conspecific venom gland extract of foraging ants from those of other species. Additionally, we determined the pheromone composition of A. opaciceps venom gland secretion using a two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Chemical analyses revealed the presence of three nitrogen-containing compounds, ide

[Hymenoptera venom allergy. Analysis of double sensitization to wasp and bee venom in own material--diagnosis and classification for immunotherapy].

According to scientific societies guidelines the indication for venom immunotherapy is based on the clinical history of the patient. Diagnostic tests, like skin prick test or specific IgE serum estimation are conduct to prove IgE dependent mechanism of allergy and insect identification. Recent guidelines indicates for group of patients with severe systemic reactions as a candidates for diagnostic testing and in consequence for immunotherapy. In some countries diagnostic tests are also performed in patient who have a history of large local reactions, if they are considered as a candidates for i

Chemometric analysis of Hymenoptera toxins and defensins: A model for predicting the biological activity of novel peptides from venoms and hemolymph.

When searching for prospective novel peptides, it is difficult to determine the biological activity of a peptide based only on its sequence. The "trial and error" approach is generally laborious, expensive and time consuming due to the large number of different experimental setups required to cover a reasonable number of biological assays. To simulate a virtual model for Hymenoptera insects, 166 peptides were selected from the venoms and hemolymphs of wasps, bees and ants and applied to a mathematical model of multivariate analysis, with nine different chemometric components: GRAVY, aliphatici…

Morphological features and occurrence of degenerative characteristics in the hypopharyngeal glands of the paper wasp Polistes versicolor (Olivier) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae).

Different histochemical techniques were applied to examine the morphological features of the secretory cells of hypopharyngeal glands in the wasp Polistes versicolor. The results showed that most analyzed individuals present active glands with secretion stored in the cytoplasm. In some glands, morphological analyses revealed the presence of degenerative characteristics. Analyses of cellular integrity, however, did not detect dead cells. The results showed that, in P. versicolor, the development and regression of the hypopharyngeal glands were not age related, unlike glands of social bees.

A novel approach for the management of the chalkbrood disease infesting honeybee Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) colonies in Egypt.

Except for, very few articles regarding the influence of some organic acids on the causative pathogen, Ascosphaera apis Maassen, no other studies pertaining to the management of the chalkbrood disease were performed, so far in Egypt. Laboratory investigations indicated that the fungicides, i.e (Galben C 46%, Radomil gold pluse WP 42.5% and Daconil 2787) at their recommended rates did not exert any effect on the mycelical growth of the fungus. Therefore, these fungicides were completely excluded from the subsequent apiary trials. As to the Mycostatin, it was found clearly that this mycostatic c

Integrative systematics of the Neotropical doryctine wasp genus Panama (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and related genera with the description of a new genus.

CONTEXT: Panama Marsh (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a Neotropical doryctine wasp genus erected to contain a single species, P. canalia Marsh, primarily based on its distinctly extended pronotum forming a pronotal collar. Although several morphologically similar genera also possess this feature, it has historically been used only to diagnose Panama. The genus was subsequently synonymised with the widespread genus Leluthia Cameron based on shared morphological features, although recent molecular evidence supported its resurrection. Despite these studies, the taxonomic limits of Panama and the rel…

On the Generic Status of Asitrichiosoma Malaise, 1939 (Hymenoptera, Cimbicidae, Cimbicinae) and Its Revision, with Description of Seven New Species.

Due to the conspicuous variation in the present morphology, particularly in the male sex (typically the legs and penis valve), the Asitrichiosoma subgenus was established by Malaise, 1939 of the Trichiosoma genus. Based on COI data, the genetic distance between Asitrichiosoma and Trichiosoma is 0.0878, and this genetic distance is significantly different (p < 0.001) from the average genetic distance (0.0256) among the species within the genus Trichiosoma. Based on morphological and molecular data, we recognize Asitrichiosoma as a valid genus. The differences between Asitrichiosoma and Trichios

Half-chromatid mutation as a possible cause of mosaic males and females in Hymenoptera and rare fertile male tortoiseshell cats.

Half-chromatid mutations occur when a single base change in a gamete is transmitted to the zygote, which, after DNA replication and cleavage … rwise has been ignored. Here I show that half-chromatid mutation in haplodiploid organisms, such as Hymenoptera, has some interesting and important consequences: (i) since all genes follow the X-linked pattern of inheritance, half-chromatid mutations should be relatively easier to detect; (ii) recessive mutations of all viabilities may be expected; (iii) mosa …

Hymenoptera sting in the head and neck region is not a risk factor for grade IV systemic reactions in patients with venom allergy.

INTRODUCTION Hymenoptera insect stings (ISs) in the head and neck (H&N) region are commonly considered to be a risk factor for grade IV systemic reactions (SRs) in patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA). However, clinical data addressing this issue are scarce. OBJECTIVES The aim of our study was to verify whether ISs in the H&N region were related to a higher risk of grade IV SRs in patients with HVA. PATIENTS AND METHODS This retrospective cross‑sectional study included 195 patients aged 2 to 74 years and treated with venom immunotherapy due to at least a grade II SR to ISs. The study …

The variation of the amount of the neurosecretory materials in the Corpus Allatum of Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: ichneumonidae) during oocyte maturation.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of neurosecretory material (NSM) in Corpus Allatum (CA) of endoparasitic Pimpla turionellae L. on reproduction. For this purpose, the egg maturation of the insect and the amount of the NSM in CA of the serial section of the brain were studied. Egg maturation was determined by measuring the terminal oocyte length. In order to determine the amount of the NSM in CA the neurosecretory granules of which were stained by paraldehyde fuchsin are considered. The egg maturation of P. turionellae have performed twice. The NSM intensity in CA continued i

The effect of larval and early adult experience on behavioural plasticity of the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Aphidiinae).

The relevance of the integration of preimaginal and eclosion experiences on the subsequent habitat preferences and mate finding by the adult has been rarely tested in holometabolous insects. In this work, the effect of larval and early adult experiences on the behavioural responses of adult males of the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius ervi, towards volatiles from the host-plant complex (HPC) and from conspecific females were evaluated. Two experience factors were considered: host diet (normal diet=ND; artificial diet=AD), and eclosion, i.e. extraction or non-extraction of the parasitoid larva from

Purification, sequencing and structural characterization of the phospholipase A1 from the venom of the social wasp Polybia paulista (Hymenoptera, Vespidae).

The biochemical and functional characterization of wasp venom toxins is an important prerequisite for the development of new tools both for the therapy of the toxic reactions due to envenomation caused by multiple stinging accidents and also for the diagnosis and therapy of allergic reactions caused by this type of venom. PLA(1) was purified from the venom of the neotropical social wasp Polybia paulista by using molecular exclusion and cation exchange chromatographies; its amino acid sequence was determined by using automated Edman degradation and compared to the sequences of other vespid veno

Host Volatiles Drive Host Preference and Consequently Shape the Fitness of a Generalist Parasitoid Wasp, Meteorus pulchricornis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Host preference is critical to the efficacy of parasitoids in biological control, while the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we found that the host preference of the generalist parasitoid Meteorus pulchricornis revealed an innate preference for Spodoptera frugiperda, followed by Plodia interpunctella. GC-MS analysis showed distinct volatile organic compound profiles between the two hosts, with 2-hexanol as a shared component. Electroantennogram (EAG) recordings showed that wasp antennae responded more strongly to S. frugiperda than to P. interpunctella odors, suggesting olfaction me

Analysis of Toxic Components in Secondary Metabolites of Entomopathogenic Fungi Clonostachys rosea (Hipocreales: Bionectriaceae) from Cephalcia chuxiongica (Hymenoptera: Pamphiliidae).

Clonostachys rosea, an entomopathogenic fungus that infects Cephalcia chuxiongica, is highly pathogenic and has significant potential for controlling the damage this pest causes to pine forests. To investigate the role of C. rosea secondary metabolites in fungal pathogenicity, we conducted toxicity assays using crude metabolite extracts. These assays evaluated the effects of different concentrations, larval developmental stages, and exposure methods on larval mortality. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was subsequently employed to identify the chemical constituents of the crude ext

Bacterial communities in Asecodes hispinarum (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and its host Brontispa longissima (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), with comparison of Wolbachia dominance.

The endoparasitoid Asecodes hispinarum (Bouček) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) serves as an effective biological control agent against Brontispa longissima (Gestro) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a notorious palm pest. Endosymbionts found in parasitoids and their hosts have attracted significant attention due to their substantial influence on biocontrol efficacy. In this study, we employed 16S rRNA sequencing, polymerase chain reaction, and fluorescence in situ hybridization to assess the symbiotic bacteria composition, diversity, phylogeny, and localization in A. hispinarum and its host B. longissim…

Antiviral action of aqueous extracts of propolis from Scaptotrigona aff. postica (Hymenoptera; Apidae) against Zica, Chikungunya, and Mayaro virus.

The limited availability of antivirals for new highly pathogenic strains of virus has become a serious public health. Therefore, news products against these pathogens has become an urgent necessity. Among the multiple sources for news antibiotics and antivirals, insect exudates or their products has become an increasingly frequent option. Insects emerged 350 million years ago and have showed a high adaptability and resistance to the most varied biomes. Their survival for so long, in such different environments, is an indication that they have a very efficient protection against environmental i
