Optimised Hybrid Attention-Based Capsule Network Integrated Three-Pathway Network for Chronic Disease Detection in Retinal Images.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 20 years, researchers have concentrated on generating retinal images as a means of detecting and classifying chronic diseases. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to avoid chronic diseases. Manually grading retinal images is time-consuming, prone to errors, and lacks patient-friendliness. Various Deep Learning (DL) algorithms are employed to detect chronic diseases from retinal fundus images. Also, these methods have some disadvantages, such as overfitting, computational cost, and so on. OBJECTIVE: The proposed research aims to develop Optimized DL based syst

Diabetic retinopathy detection from fundus images: A wide survey from grading to segmentation of lesions.

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases worldwide and requires accurate diagnosis. Patients with diabetes are often affected by diabetic retinopathy (DR), which can lead to low vision, vision loss, or blindness. Therefore, a robust computer-aided diagnosis system is needed to provide better treatment to patients. This review mainly focuses on the works related to diagnosing DR from retinal fundus images. A total of 128 research papers have been reviewed from 1986 to 2025. The survey is divided into two parts: one for the grading/classification of DR and the other for DR lesions segmentatio

Semi-supervised medical image segmentation of bladder tumors based on supervised branches and uncertainty estimation.

Supervised learning has excellent segmentation performance in bladder tumor segmentation, but it relies on a large amount of labeled data. To learn the features of bladder tumors from limited labeled data and obtain accurate segmentation results, we propose a semi-supervised segmentation method for bladder tumors, UDS-MT. The method consists of a Mean Teacher network and a guided branch, which respectively undertake the tasks of segmentation prediction and supervision of prediction results. Mean teacher network uses the exponential moving average (EMA) mechanism to update the teacher network p

Computer-based quantitative image texture analysis using multi-collinearity diagnosis in chest X-ray images.

Despite tremendous efforts devoted to the area, image texture analysis is still an open research field. This paper presents an algorithm and experimental results demonstrating the feasibility of developing automated tools to detect abnormal X-ray images based on tissue attenuation. Specifically, this work proposes using the variability characterised by singular values and conditional indices extracted from the singular value decomposition (SVD) as image texture features. In addition, the paper introduces a "tuning weight" parameter to consider the variability of the X-ray attenuation in tissue

Weakly Supervised Breast Ultrasound Image Segmentation Based on Image Selection.

Automatic segmentation in Breast Ultrasound (BUS) imaging is vital to BUS computer-aided diagnostic systems. Fully supervised learning approaches can attain high accuracy, yet they depend on pixel-level annotations that are challenging to obtain. As an alternative, weakly supervised learning methods offer a way to lessen the dependency on extensive annotation requirements. Existing weakly supervised learning methods are typically trained on the entire dataset, but not all samples are effective in training a robust image segmentation model. To overcome this challenge, we have developed a new we

DSTAN: A Deformable Spatial-temporal Attention Network with Bidirectional Sequence Feature Refinement for Speckle Noise Removal in Thyroid Ultrasound Video.

Thyroid ultrasound video provides significant value for thyroid diseases diagnosis, but the ultrasound imaging process is often affected by the speckle noise, resulting in poor quality of the ultrasound video. Numerous video denoising methods have been proposed to remove noise while preserving texture details. However, existing methods still suffer from the following problems: (1) relevant temporal features in the low-contrast ultrasound video cannot be accurately aligned and effectively aggregated by simple optical flow or motion estimation, resulting in the artifacts and motion blur in the v

Electronic Medical Record Context Signatures Improve Diagnostic Classification Using Medical Image Computing.

Composite models that combine medical imaging with electronic medical records (EMR) improve predictive power when compared to traditional models that use imaging alone. The digitization of EMR provides potential access to a wealth of medical information, but presents new challenges in algorithm design and inference. Previous studies, such as Phenome Wide Association Study (PheWAS), have shown that EMR data can be used to investigate the relationship between genotypes and clinical conditions. Here, we introduce Phenome-Disease Association Study to extend the statistical capabilities of the PheW

Statistical shape model reconstruction with sparse anomalous deformations: Application to intervertebral disc herniation.

Many medical image processing techniques rely on accurate shape modeling of anatomical features. The presence of shape abnormalities challenges traditional processing algorithms based on strong morphological priors. In this work, a sparse shape reconstruction from a statistical shape model is presented. It combines the advantages of traditional statistical shape models (defining a 'normal' shape space) and previously presented sparse shape composition (providing localized descriptors of anomalies). The algorithm was incorporated into our image segmentation and classification software. Evaluati

Automatic segmentation and classification of human intestinal parasites from microscopy images.

Human intestinal parasites constitute a problem in most tropical countries, causing death or physical and mental disorders. Their diagnosis usually relies on the visual analysis of microscopy images, with error rates that may range from moderate to high. The problem has been addressed via computational image analysis, but only for a few species and images free of fecal impurities. In routine, fecal impurities are a real challenge for automatic image analysis. We have circumvented this problem by a method that can segment and classify, from bright field microscopy images with fecal impurities,

Fast localization and segmentation of optic disk in retinal images using directional matched filtering and level sets.

The optic disk (OD) center and margin are typically requisite landmarks in establishing a frame of reference for classifying retinal and optic nerve pathology. Reliable and efficient OD localization and segmentation are important tasks in automatic eye disease screening. This paper presents a new, fast, and fully automatic OD localization and segmentation algorithm developed for retinal disease screening. First, OD location candidates are identified using template matching. The template is designed to adapt to different image resolutions. Then, vessel characteristics (patterns) on the OD are u

Detection of small bowel polyps and ulcers in wireless capsule endoscopy videos.

Over the last decade, wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) technology has become a very useful tool for diagnosing diseases within the human digestive tract. Physicians using WCE can examine the digestive tract in a minimally invasive way searching for pathological abnormalities such as bleeding, polyps, ulcers, and Crohn's disease. To improve effectiveness of WCE, researchers have developed software methods to automatically detect these diseases at a high rate of success. This paper proposes a novel synergistic methodology for automatically discovering polyps (protrusions) and perforated ulcers i

A Dynamic Fractional Fourier Transformer With Local-Global Spectral Attention for Medical Hyperspectral Image Classification.

Medical hyperspectral images (MHSIs) are highly promising for assisting with pathological diagnoses because of their rich spatial and spectral information. However, the existing methods inadequately model joint spatial-frequency correlations and struggle to dynamically separate nonstationary pathological details from global structures. To address these challenges, a fractional Fourier transformer (FracTrans) that is designed to explicitly model the nonstationary spatial-frequency correlations that are inherent in MHSIs is proposed in this paper. By integrating a learnable fractional Fourier tr

Quantitative MRI in children with Crohn's disease - where do we stand?

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the ileum and colon. This disease is characterized by recurrent bouts of intestinal inflammation with subsequent bowel wall damage, including scarring (i.e., fibrosis) and abnormal smooth muscle proliferation. MR enterography, an MRI examination tailored to assess the small bowel, is a first-line diagnostic tool for diagnosing CD in children, characterization and monitoring of disease severity and extent, and assessment of disease-related complications. To date, such MRI evaluations h
