Approximately 40 to 50 infants and children with similar epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory features of AIDS have been described. The occurrence of significant numbers of patients with PAIDS in geographic areas that are associated with similar risk factors and clinical features of AIDS suggests a common cause. Immunologic evaluation reveals hypergammaglobulinemia, decreased or absent antibody responses after immunization, normal to decreased T-cell numbers, decreased helper/suppressor cell ratios, and abnormal results of functional studies of T-cells. None of the patients described has th

Leprosy affects over 10 million people in the world. The disease is a model of graded cell-mediated immunity, in this case to the causative organism, Mycobacterium leprae. The clinical manifestations are due to (i) bacterial progression, (ii) immunologic responses of the host, (iii) peripheral nerve damage due to either or both bacterial progression and immunologic responses of the host, and (iv) preventable secondary deformities following nerve damage, which account for most of the stigma of the disease. Treatment modalities are now available to control or minimize the effects of bacterial pr

BACKGROUND: Peanut allergy represents a significant health threat in the United States. The factors contributing to the severity of the allergic response and the immunopathogenic mechanisms underlying peanut allergy remain to be completely characterized. As yet, no animal model has been developed that will completely mimic the physical, immunologic, and histologic features of food allergy.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to develop a neonatal pig model of peanut allergy that would mimic the allergic symptoms and the immunologic and histologic profile of human peanut allergy.

OBJECTIVE: To identify metabolic and body composition changes associated with HIV-1 infection in a cross-sectional study of individuals stratified by immunologic status and body mass.
DESIGN: Metabolic abnormalities including glucose intolerance and changes in body morphology have recently been described in HIV-1-infected individuals following therapy with protease inhibitor-containing highly active anti-retroviral therapy. Although this is suggestive of a direct drug effect, the possibility that HIV infection may induce a tendency towards such underlying derangements should be considered. HI

Immunologic cytotoxicity is an important endpoint of the immune response to tumors, viral infected cells, grafted tissues, and exogenous microorganisms, and is also an important mechanism of disease, especially in autoimmunity. There are multiple mechanisms of immunologic cytotoxicity, but each has three major stages: leukocyte/target attachment, specific recognition, and target lysis following effector activation. Adhesion molecules present on leukocytes and potential targets appear to be involved in all three stages of cytotoxicity. A major factor in all types of cellular cytotoxicity is the

Obsessive⁻compulsive disorder (OCD) affects about 2% of the general population, for which several etiological factors were identified. Important among these is immunological dysfunction. This review aims to show how immunology can inform specific etiological factors, and how distinguishing between these etiologies is important from a personalized treatment perspective. We found discrepancies concerning cytokines, raising the hypothesis of specific immunological etiological factors. Antibody studies support the existence of a potential autoimmune etiological factor. Infections may also provoke

"Wolf's isotopic response" refers to the occurrence of a new dermatosis at the site of previously healed dermatosis. A number of factors including viral, neural, vascular, and immunologic factors have been implicated in the causation of this peculiar response but none has been proven conclusively. Here, we report a case where lichen planus developed at the site of dermatofibrosarcoma protruberans that had been previously treated with surgery and radiotherapy. We also put forth a hypothesis on the genesis of isotopic response considering the above mentioned factors.

Adverse clinical reactions to food associated with disturbed immunologic function (food allergy) affect 1-3% of the population and vary from life-threatening to a minor inconvenience. They must be differentiated from reactions caused by toxins, pharmacologic agents, enzyme deficiences and non-specific release of inflammatory mediator substances. Enteric absorption of food protein antigens which may occur despite an array of gastrointestinal protective mechanisms normally induces both a protective immune response and immunologic tolerance. Quantitative changes in absorption related to deficient

Herpes (varicella) zoster (HZ) infection occurs in 4 people per 1000 in the general US population (irrespective of prior varicella infection and vaccination status) each year and has been the subject of scientific inquiry for decades. The consequences of infection are myriad and may depend on the dermatome of involvement as well as host factors such as age, comorbidities, prior treatment or immunization, and immunologic status. Pregnancy is associated with an altered immune and hormonal status in the mother. While maternal HZ infection during pregnancy is not uncommon, the implications for bot

With the advent of in vitro immunologic testing, we can now detect exposed individuals who are sensitized to beryllium and those who have chronic beryllium disease (CBD) with lung pathology and impairment. Earlier detection and more accurate diagnostic tools raise new questions about the natural history of sensitization and granulomatous disease. Preliminary data suggest that early detection identifies people who are sensitized to beryllium and that these individuals are at risk for progressing into clinical disease. This article discusses the historical, recent, and ongoing studies germane to

Allergic and immunologic skin diseases negatively impact the quality of life (QoL) of affected patients with detrimental consequences. Nonetheless, in everyday clinical practice the evaluation of QoL is often overlooked. Considering the increasing prevalence of atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, hereditary angioedema, cutaneous mastocytosis, and urticaria, it is essential to determine the effects of allergic and immunologic skin diseases on QoL. Mycobacterium genavense infection, a rare nontuberculous mycobacteria infection, occurs in heavily immunocompromised patients (i.e., those with advanced HIV disease, genetic disorders, or acquired immunologic disorders and those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy). We report a case of disseminated M. genavense infection preceding Hodgkin lymphoma in a patient without obvious risk factors for this infection.

We report 2 patients with invasive aspergillosis after infection with pandemic (H1N1) 2009. Influenza viruses are known to cause immunologic defects and impair ciliary clearance. These defects, combined with high-dose corticosteroids prescribed during influenza-associated adult respiratory distress syndrome, may be novel risk factors predisposing otherwise immunocompetent patients to invasive aspergillosis.

Tinea imbricata (TI) or Tokelau is a superficial mycosis caused by Trichophyton concentricum, an anthropophilic dermatophyte. It is endemic in some islands of the South Pacific (Polynesia), South-East Asia, Central and South America, and Mexico, and is most often seen in individuals living in primitive and isolated conditions. The skin lesions are characteristically concentric and lamellar (imbricata: in Latin, tiled) plaques of scale. Predisposing conditions include humidity, inheritance, and immunologic factors. The diagnosis is usually made on clinical grounds, supported by skin scrapings a…

The immunopathogenesis of celiac disease requires interactions between genetic, environmental and immunologic factors. Genes within the class II region of the major histocompatibility complex (HLA-D region) represent a major component contributing to disease susceptibility. Structural studies of genes within the HLA-D region have shown that the class II HLA haplotype associated with celiac disease is extended, and includes not only the HLA-DR and DQ subregions, but also the HLA-DP subregion. The celiac disease-associated haplotype is marked in the HLA-DP subregion by a polymorphic 4 kilobase R…

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), defined as two to three spontaneous pregnancy terminations occurring before 12 weeks of gestation, affects approximately 1% of the general population. The causes may include congenital factors that originate with the quality of the gametes (sperm or oocyte) or the resulting embryo, or factors that originate within the uterus. Alterations of endometrial receptivity from endometriosis and/or endometritis, which are associated with impaired action of progesterone, have also been implicated in RPL. Finally, immunologic factors and thrombophilia, congenital and acqui…

In the literature, correlations between adenoids and middle ear disorders have been widely discussed over the years. Adenoids fundamentally influence inflammation/ infections of the middle ear through 3 factors: obstructive, inflammatory/infective, and immunologic. The authors carefully analyze each of these factors reviewing the opinion of the most important researches in the field. The important role of immunological (T cells and Ig), infective (microorganisms and bacterial biofilms) and allergic factors as predisposing factors for otitis media leads one to consider the importance of a medic

Menière's syndrome of fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss, episodic vertigo, and tinnitus is the clinical presentation resulting from several different pathologic processes. The present study was designed to probe for immunologic factors in Menière's disease. It has previously been shown that the presence of circulating antibodies against a 68-kD protein detected by Western blot immunoassay of serum from patients with idiopathic, progressive, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (IPB SNHL) is highly correlated with both activity of disease and corticosteroid responsiveness of the hearing lo…

Previously called spontaneous abortion, early pregnancy loss (EPL) is the preferred term encompassing threatened abortion, incomplete abortion, complete abortion, and anembryonic pregnancy. EPL has many causes, including chromosomal abnormalities, immunologic and infectious causes, and underlying maternal risk factors. Because many patients present with first-trimester bleeding, clinicians must know the appropriate evaluation and management techniques.

In the article the role of immunologic cells and hemostatic factors in the formation of atherosclerosis was described. Attention was paid to restenosis in patients undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), a phenomenon that occurs in 20-50% of these patients. Among many factors that contribute to restenosis more attention is paid lately to the role of chemokines. The physiology role of chemokines was described and the contribution of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 to restenosis after PTCA.
