Pediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI) is a major risk factor associated with adulthood incarceration. Most research into the link between pTBI and adulthood incarceration has focused on incarcerated males, who comprise the vast majority of incarcerated adults, particularly in industrialized nations. In this review, we sought to identify sex-related differences in the incidence and pathophysiology of pTBI and subsequent risk of adulthood incarceration. A scoping review was undertaken using PubMed, Scopus, Ovid, and the Cochrane Library. Articles analyzing sex-related differences in pTBI and a

OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations among mass incarceration, maternal vulnerability, and disparities in birth outcomes across U.S. counties, utilizing an ecological model and reproductive justice perspective was used. This study tests whether mass incarceration is associated with infant mortality and low birthweight across U.S. counties, and whether maternal vulnerability explains the relationship between mass incarceration and birth disparities.
METHODS: Data were derived from a variety of public sources and were merged using federal FIPS codes. Outcomes from the CDC Vitality Statistics

Despite an aging confined population, the current state of organ transplantation in carceral systems is largely unknown. This scoping review aimed to assess the literature on organ transplantation in populations experiencing incarceration. The review used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for a scoping review. Included references were published between January 2000 and January 2022 in PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature via EBSCO, EMBASE.com, PsycInfo via EBSCO, Sociological Abstracts via ProQuest, and Scopus. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) offers spiritual supports to Veterans nationally through its Chaplaincy Service and its Whole Health initiative. There are no systematic efforts to extend spiritual supports to Veterans re-entering community post-incarceration, however. Thus, the full potential of spiritual supports in bolstering well-being and minimizing recidivism during re-entry may not be fully realized. To explore this potential and ways to optimize it for re-entry Veterans, we conducted an exploratory needs assessment. We interviewed six re-entry Veterans and six staff members who

OBJECTIVES: Describe the prevalence, health, and birth outcomes of incarcerated pregnant individuals in California between 2011 and 2015.
STUDY DESIGN: A population-based cohort study was performed using linked birth certificate and hospital discharge data. Associations between incarceration and birth outcomes were examined, including multivariable logistic regression to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals.
RESULTS: Amongst 1401 incarcerated and 551,029 nonincarcerated pregnant people across 112 delivery hospitals, 33% of incarcerated individuals had late initiation of prenatal

We examined the association between history of incarceration (HOI) and food insecurity (FI) among older adults using pooled data from 12,702 respondents aged 51+ who participated in the 2012 and 2014 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. In our sample, 12.8% of participants reported FI. Those with a HOI had an increased odds of FI (OR 1.83; 95% CI 1.52-2.21). Race/ethnicity moderated the association between HOI and FI. The positive and statistically significant association was concentrated among Non-Hispanic Black and Non-Hispanic White participants. No statistically significant associatio

Delays in vaccinating communities of color to COVID-19 have signaled a need to investigate structural barriers to vaccine uptake, with mass incarceration demanding greater characterization as a potential factor. In a nationally representative survey from February-March 2021 (N = 1,157), exposure to the criminal legal system, defined as having been incarcerated in prison or jail or having had a family member or close friend incarcerated, was associated with higher odds for COVID-19 vaccine deliberation. Individuals with criminal legal system exposure reported lower confidence in physician recom

INTRODUCTION: This study clarifies the differences in death during incarceration and legal intervention between males and females, delineating the differences in demographic features and the circumstances of the violent death including location, injury pattern, and perpetrator.
METHODS: The data used are from the National Violent Death Reporting System database from 2003 to 2019. All victims were either in custody, in the process of custody, or in prison. Sex was coded as female or male and as assigned at birth. All analyses were conducted using SAS 9.4 software using chi-square tests, with a

The previously unexplored noncovalent binding of the highly toxic tetrafluoroberyllate anion (BeF42-) and its extraction from water into organic solvents are presented. Nanojars resemble anion-binding proteins in that they also possess an inner anion binding pocket lined by a multitude of H-bond donors (OH groups), which wrap around the incarcerated anion and completely isolate it from the surrounding medium. The BeF4-binding propensity of [BeF4⊂{CuII(OH)(pz)}n]2- (pz = pyrazolate; n = 27-32) nanojars of different sizes is investigated using an array of techniques including mass spectrometry,

A growing body of work estimates the prevalence of childhood victimization among incarcerated people. The present study seeks to descriptively and quantitatively summarize this abundant literature by reviewing studies that report childhood victimization prevalence among people incarcerated in the United States. The review includes any study of childhood victimization that uses a sample of incarcerated adults (age eighteen or older) and that reports the proportion of the sample that experienced child abuse and/or neglect. Sixty-seven studies met these criteria and were analyzed, encompassing 1,

Despite the importance of understanding the prevalence, causes, and consequences of conflict and violence within families, the specific risk of violence following a family member's release from incarceration has been hard to ascertain. Research indicates that a significant percentage of persons released from incarceration will experience involvement in family violence in their life, yet it remains unclear whether this heightened risk exists due to larger family or structural contexts or whether incarceration itself leads to heightened risk of family violence after release. Using an integrative

The United States leads globally in incarceration. Incarceration can disrupt families in both immediate and long-term ways, including finances and mental illness. We examined the relationship between father incarceration during adolescence and the development of mental illness in adulthood as well as the relationship of household assets and debts in relation to the mental illness outcomes. Wave IV data of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were used with a final analytic sample of 2129 participants. Data were analyzed using MANOVA in Stata 13.1. The findings indicate

INTRODUCTION: Mass incarceration is becoming one of this country's most detrimental public health problems. Children are particularly affected by this phenomenon, as parental incarceration is associated with a host of adverse outcomes, including children's engagement in health-risk behaviors that may negatively influence their mental and physical health. This study compares physical health indicators of youth with currently and formerly incarcerated parents with youth with no history of parental incarceration.
METHOD: Using cross-sectional data from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS), th

IMPORTANCE: Restrictive housing, otherwise known as solitary confinement, during incarceration is associated with poor health outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the association of restrictive housing with reincarceration and mortality after release.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included 229 274 individuals who were incarcerated and released from the North Carolina prison system from January 2000 to December 2015. Incarceration data were matched with death records from January 2000 to December 2016. Covariates included age, number of prior incarceration
