A variety of model-based (growth models) and model-free (cubic splines, exponentials) equations were fitted using weighted-nonlinear least squares regression to embryonic growth data from Alligator mississippiensis eggs incubated at 30 and 33 degrees C. The haemolytic action of different concentrations of HgCl2 on rat red blood cells (RBC) was studied in vitro. The concentrations of HgCl2 in incubating media were 0.15, 0.25 and 0.50 mmol.l-1. The incubation of Y. pestis, the causative agent of plague, in hemolyzed human red blood cells at 37 degrees C for 3 hours enhanced the virulence of vaccine strain EV76 in white mice and guinea pigs and decreased the LD50 of attenuated strains. The phenomenon of increased virulence has been observed only in case of the combined injection of bacteria with the incubation medium. The virulence of Y. pestis cells, introduced alone after such treatment, has proved to remain at the same level.

Treponema pallidum organisms suspended in equal parts of Nelson's survival medium alone and with addition of various sera were counted in 5 microliters samples before and after 18 hours' anaerobic incubation at 35 degrees C. Human red cells were incubated at pH 8.2 and 30 mM phosphate concentration with glucose, glucose plus methylene blue, or inosine. In 16 normal subjects, the lactate production rate (LPR) from glucose alone was 92.2 +/- 7.5 mumoles per minute per liter red blood cell.
