OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical profiles, image findings and surgical outcome of 155 cases of spinal dysraphism.
METHODS: 155 patients … spina bifida (in our previous study). The incidence of hydrocephalus in spinal dysraphism is low in India in comparison to the Western world. Some patients with mild hydrocephalus on scan may not require a shunt operation. Surgical intervention should be early after entire neural axis screening by MRI.

The first case of infection with Group B meningococcus in India is reported. The patient was a 4-month-old boy who presented with meningitis and died within 6 h of admission. Gram stain of CSF showed meningococci and latex particle agglutination test on CSF was strongly positive for Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B. The CSF was also positive for meningococcus by polymerase chain reaction using primers NM1 and NM6, which amplify a 650 bp region of the dihydropteroate synthase (dhps) gene of N. meningitidis.

An examination of 18 clinical isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans from India revealed that 15 belonged to C. neoformans var. neoformans (serotype A = 13 isolates, serotype AD = two isolates) and three belonged to C. neoformans var. gattii (serotype B). This is the first documented record of the var. gattii and serotype AD of the var. neoformans occurring in India.

Seventy eight patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) were seen over a period of 14 years. They were analysed after clinical, haematological, biochemical, immunological and radiological investigations for comparison with other Indian and Western studies. Nine of the 78 were cases of childhood PSS. There was a female preponderance (3.9:1) and the peak age of occurrence was the 4th decade (32.1%). A high incidence of ocular rhinosporidiosis in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India is reported. Among the four taluks (sub-division for administration), highest occurrence was found in Agastheeswaram taluk (51.2%) followed by Kalkulam (24.4%), Thovalai (22%) and Vilavancode (2.4%). Human seminal plasma allergy (HSPA) in women has been documented in the West. We describe here the first case of HSPA reported in India. An 18-year-old married woman presented with a 2-year history of episodic wheezing dyspnea. She had always had local postcoital symptoms since her first intercourse.
