INTRODUCTION: Fluorine-18 labeled radiopharmaceuticals undergo quality control testing for residual phase-transfer-catalyst content. The almost universally used quality-control test is a silica plate spot-test comparison of the radiopharmaceutical beside a 50-ppm standard. Once developed by staining, the radiopharmaceutical spot must be of equal or less intensity to pass the test. There is currently a need for a quantitative, inexpensive, and less subjective quality control method that allows the automatic incorporation of the acquired measurement directly into electronic batch reports.

BACKGROUND: Dental handpieces are used in critical and semi-critical operative interventions. Although some dental professional bodies recommend that dental handpieces are sterilized between patient use there is a lack of clarity and understanding of the effectiveness of different steam sterilization processes. The internal mechanisms of dental handpieces contain narrow lumens (0.8-2.3 mm) which can impede the removal of air and ingress of saturated steam required to achieve sterilization conditions.

Isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions (IMCR) are among the most important chemical reactions to efficiently generate molecular diversity and have found widespread use in industry and academia. Generally, isocyanides are synthesized in 1-2 steps starting from primary amines. Here we describe two novel uronium salts, TOMBU and COMBU, derived from the recently described Oxyma-B for use in peptide bond synthesis. These coupling reagents are more stable than COMU in DMF. Furthermore, using various peptide synthetic models in solution and solid-phase synthesis, we reveal that they show better performance than HBTU in terms of preserving chiral integrity and coupling yields, but slightly worse performance than COMU.

The synthesis of enantiopure N-benzylidene nitrones of N-hydroxy-alpha-amino acids and their incorporation using standard Fmoc-based peptide chemistry into solid-supported peptide chains is described. Deprotection and resin cleavage affords N-terminal peptide hydroxylamines, which are the key substrates for chemoselective ligations with C-terminal peptide alpha-ketoacids. This general route is applicable to a variety of different N-terminal residues and provides a general approach to the solid phase synthesis of peptide hydroxylamines.

Modifications of the Zwikker- and Parri color detection tests were investigated and compared according to their ability to distinguish between nine different barbituric acids and hydantoins.
