Ri/rol transformation by Rhizobium rhizogenes is well known to alter plant architecture, including shoot compactness, branching and root development. However, its significance for plant responses to nitrogen limitation remains unclear. Here, we investigated developmental, physiological and hormonal responses of an interspecific Kalanchoë laciniata × K. blossfeldiana hybrid to nitrogen deficiency using complementary pot and hydroponic experiments. Nitrogen deficiency strongly reduced leaf area and total biomass in both wild-type (WT) and rol-transformed (Rol) plants. Nevertheless, rol transform

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are multifunctional enzymes involved in the metabolism of a wide variety of xenobiotics and endogenous compounds. Since some GST isozymes are overexpressed in a variety of malignancies and have been shown to play roles in the development of drug resistance, GSTs have become a promising therapeutic target. Although numerous natural and plant-derived compounds have been evaluated as GST inhibitors, the interaction between human GSTP1-1 and auxins-indole-derived plant hormones that are also detectable in human biological systems-has not been previously characteri

Plastid ribosomes are composed of large (50S) and small (30S) subunits, each made up of ribosomal RNAs (rRNA) and plastid ribosomal proteins (PRPs). While numerous PRPs have been characterized, the functions of several PRPs remain elusive. We followed a reverse genetics approach in Arabidopsis to functionally characterize nuclear genes encoding PRPs for which no viable mutant alleles had been described. We report here the characterization of 50S subunit PRP bL31c. Its gene, RPL31, was previously identified as essential for embryo development (EMB2184), but viable alleles were unavailable. RPL3

This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity and corn seed protective effect of two Bacillus subtilis isolates in two formulations, against Fusarium verticillioides, along with their indole acetic acid, siderophore production, and phosphate solubilization ability. Antifungal activity of two Bacillus subtilis isolates (NT1 and NT2) was investigated against F. verticillioides 97L in solid media and on corn seeds. Both B. subtilis isolates showed antifungal activity through production of diffusible antifungal compounds and NT2 showed the highest radial growth inhibition (61.7%).

Herbicides in combination with genetically modified herbicide-resistant crops have revolutionized modern weed management, increased crop yields, and facilitated farming practices. However, rapid evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds necessitates new resistance traits to sustain control efficacy. Here, we introduce a terminal carboxyl anchoring mechanism-inspired approach for precise discovery of P450 herbicide resistance genes, by which a number of bacterial P450 peroxygenases are predicted and confirmed to degrade auxin herbicides. Upon enzyme engineering, the optimal mutant P450BSβ-F46A can

This study evaluated the nematicidal efficacy and plant growth-promoting potential of the cell-free bacterial culture supernatant (BCS) of Bacillus megaterium in mitigating Meloidogyne incognita-induced stress in Solanum lycopersicum under both in vitro and in vivo conditions. Mortality bioassay revealed that cell-free BCS induced a clear dose- and time-dependent nematicidal response, with maximum juvenile mortality of 100% observed at 100% concentration within 96 h (p < 0.001). B. megaterium was characterized for plant growth-promoting and biocontrol traits including indole-3-acetic acid (IAA

The agriculture sector is encountering a range of challenges globally, driven by global climate changes and resource constraints. Crop production is restricted by numerous abiotic factors including salinity stress which negatively influences the physiological, biochemical and molecular responses of plants. Several studies demonstrated that some nanoparticles may enhance crop production by directly boosting the tolerance of plants aganist the salinity stress. In this study, the protective role of boron nitride nanoparticles (BNPs) was determined in two rice cultivars which differ in salinity to

This research studied the impact of bare iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs), citrate-stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4CA NPs), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on the genetic stability and metabolic activity of Chrysanthemum × morifolium (Ramat.) Hemsl. plants obtained from synthetic seeds. For this purpose, axillary buds of chrysanthemum 'Richmond' were embedded in 3% calcium alginate supplemented with NPs and IAA, either singularly or in combination. Next, the synthetic seeds were stored at 4 °C in the dark (for eight weeks) on an agar-water medium and then transferred to room tempe

BACKGROUND: Babesia duncani is a pathogen within the phylum Apicomplexa that causes human babesiosis. It poses a significant threat to public health, as it can be transmitted not only through tick bites but also via blood transfusion. Consequently, an understanding of the gene functions of this pathogen is necessary for the development of drugs and vaccines. However, the absence of conditional gene knockdown tools has hindered the research on this pathogen. The auxin-inducible degron (AID) system is a rapid, reversible conditional knockdown system widely used in gene function studies. Thus, th

Penoxsulam is an important herbicide for the control of Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv. Two resistant populations 17GA (R1) and 16NXB (R2) showed 17- and 3-fold resistance to penoxsulam, respectively. A known resistance mutation of Trp-574-Leu in ALS gene and enhanced rates of penoxsulam metabolism likely involving GST contribute to penoxsulam resistance in R1 population. This population had resistance to the ALS-inhibitors pyribenzoxim and bispyribac‑sodium and the auxin herbicide quinclorac, but was susceptible to ACCase-inhibitors quizalofop-p-ethyl and cyhalofop-butyl. No known mutat

Auxin and cytokinin are two kinds of important phytohormones that mediate outgrowth of axillary buds in plants. How nitric oxide and its regulator of S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) take part in auxin and cytokinin signaling for controlling axillary buds outgrowth remains elusive. We investigated the roles of GSNOR during tomato axillary bud outgrowth by using physiological, biochemical and genetic approaches. GSNOR negatively regulated NO homeostasis. Suppression of GSNOR promoted axillary bud outgrowth by inhibiting the expression of FZY in both apical and axillary buds. Meanwhile, AU

Plant growth and development are tightly regulated by phytohormones. However, little is known about the interaction between auxin and gibberellin acid (GA) during flower stalk elongation and how it is directly related to organ formation. Therefore, the effects of indole acetic acid (IAA) and GA3 treatments and their interaction on flower stalk elongation in flowering Chinese cabbage were investigated. The growth of flowering Chinese cabbage is regulated by IAA and GA3, and the opposite results were observed after treatments with uniconazole (GA synthesis inhibitor) and N-1-naphthylphthalamic a

AIM: In this work, we evaluated the effects of light on growth, cell physiology and stress response of Azospirillum brasilense Az39, a non-photosynthetic rhizobacteria, under planktonic growth conditions.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Exponential cultures of Az39 were exposed to blue (BL), red (RL) and daylight (DL) or maintained in darkness for 24, 48 and 72 h. The biomass production and indole 3-acetic acid (IAA) biosynthesis increased by exposition to DL. Conversely, BL decreased IAA concentration through a direct effect on the molecule. The DL increased superoxide dismutase activity, hydrogen pero

Silver ions increase plasma membrane permeability for water and small organic compounds through their stimulatory effect on plasma membrane calcium channels, with subsequent modulation of intracellular calcium levels and ion homeostasis. The action of silver ions at the plant plasma membrane is largely connected with the inhibition of ethylene signalling thanks to the ability of silver ion to replace the copper cofactor in the ethylene receptor. A link coupling the action of silver ions and cellular auxin efflux has been suggested earlier by their possible direct interaction with auxin efflux

FGIN-1-27 is an agonist at the translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO), a cholesterol transporter that is associated with neurosteroidogenesis. This protein has been identified as a peripheral binding site for benzodiazepines; in anamniotes, however, a second TSPO isoform that is absent in amniotes has been implicated in erythropoiesis. Functional conservation of the central benzodiazepine-binding site located in the GABAA receptors has been demonstrated in anamniotes and amniotes alike; however, it was not previously demonstrated for TSPO. The present investigation explored the behavioral effects

Ectopic expression of the MYB transcription factor of AmROSEA1 from Antirrhinum majus has been reported to change anthocyanin and other metabolites in several species. In this study, we found that overexpression of AmRosea1 significantly improved the tolerance of transgenic rice to drought and salinity stresses. Transcriptome analysis revealed that a considerable number of stress-related genes were affected by exogenous AmRosea1 during both drought and salinity stress treatments. These affected genes are involved in stress signal transduction, the hormone signal pathway, ion homeostasis and th

The plant hormone auxin is a mobile signal which affects nuclear transcription by regulating the stability of auxin/indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) repressor proteins. Auxin is transported polarly from cell to cell by auxin efflux proteins of the PIN family, but it is not as yet clear how auxin levels are regulated within cells and how access of auxin to the nucleus may be controlled. The Arabidopsis genome contains eight PINs, encoding proteins with a similar membrane topology. While five of the PINs are typically targeted polarly to the plasma membranes, the smallest members of the family, PIN5 a

Here we characterized the effect of the ectomycorrhizal symbiosis on the genotypic and functional diversity of soil Pseudomonas fluorescens populations and analysed its possible consequences in terms of plant nutrition, development and health. Sixty strains of P. fluorescens were isolated from the bulk soil of a forest nursery, the ectomycorrhizosphere and the ectomycorrhizas of the Douglas fir (Pseudostuga menziesii) seedlings-Laccaria bicolor S238N. They were characterized in vitro with the following criteria: ARDRA, phosphate solubilization, siderophore, HCN and AIA production, genes of N2-
