The Effect of Weaning Practices on the Nutritional and Health Status of Saudi Preschool Children.

Background Weaning is a complex procedure that gradually introduces complementary foods to the baby's diet. Solid food should be started between the ages of 6 and 12 months. Weaning is a challenging and crucial stage in an infant's development. Extreme caution should be used during weaning an infant because delaying it can cause issues like sluggish growth, difficulties feeding, malnutrition, and iron deficiency. Objective The current study aims to determine the impact of delayed or early weaning practices on the nutritional status of preschool children in Saudi Arabia. Data was gathered about

Nutritionally Improved Traditional Recipes and Fortified Infant Flours to Increase the Nutritional and Energy Intake in 6-11-Month-Old Infants in Rural Niger: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

UNLABELLED: Back-ground: In 2022, in Niger, undernutrition was highly prevalent in 6-23-month-old infants and their diet was poorly diversified. METHODS: This cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Zinder region of Niger to monitor food and nutritional intakes from two food solutions, fortified infant flours (FIF) and ten nutritionally improved traditional recipes (NITR), in breastfed 6-11-month-old infants divided into four groups: control, responsive feeding (RF) awareness raising, RF + FIF, and RF + NITR. Data were collected at T0 (n = 322 infants) and 3 months later (T3,

Complementary feeding patterns in preterm and term infants.

Complementary feeding is essential for infants' nutritional status and development, marking the transition to solid foods when breast milk or formula alone is insufficient. Despite its importance, clear recommendations on which foods to introduce when initiating complementary feeding in preterm infants are lacking. By using data from our previously published randomized controlled trial on the timing of complementary feeding in preterm infants, the current study explores the complementary feeding patterns of preterm infants and compares them with those of term-born infants, providing insights i

Characteristics of Dysphagia in Infants with Microcephaly Caused by Congenital Zika Virus Infection, Brazil, 2015.

We summarize the characteristics of dysphagia in 9 infants in Brazil with microcephaly caused by congenital Zika virus infection. The Schedule for Oral Motor Assessment, fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, and the videofluoroscopic swallowing study were used as noninstrumental and instrumental assessments. All infants had a degree of neurologic damage and showed abnormalities in the oral phase. Of the 9 infants, 8 lacked oral and upper respiratory tract sensitivity, leading to delays in initiation of the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. Those delays, combined with marked oral dysfun

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in commercially available infant formulae in Nigeria: estimation of dietary intakes and risk assessment.

The concentrations and profiles of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in commercially available infant formulae and follow-up formulae in Nigeria were determined with a view to providing information on the health risks to children from the consumption of these infant foods. The concentrations of PAHs were measured by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after extraction by ultrasonication with acetone/dichloromethane and clean-up. The concentrations of the Σ16 PAHs in these infant formulae ranged from 0.102 to 1.98 μg kg(-1), 0.054-1.98 μg kg(-1), 0.081-2.54 μg kg(-1) and…

Effects of improved on-farm crop storage on DNA methylation of mothers and their infants: evidence from a randomized controlled trial in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Stress during pregnancy can lead to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes through epigenetic changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Among farmers in low-income countries, one important stressor is food insecurity, which can be reduced using hermetic storage bags. This study aimed to determine, for the first time, whether a hermetic storage bag intervention during pregnancy positively affects maternal and infant DNA methylation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis-related genes FKBP5 and NR3C1. We further analyzed whether anthropometrics, stress, and mental

Traditional foods vs. manufactured baby foods.

The provision of nutrient-dense complementary foods is essential to ensure an infant's nutrient requirements are met. Yet often, relative to recommendations, traditional complementary foods have low levels of nutrients, suggesting a role, for fortified manufactured baby foods, in ensuring dietary adequacy. In this review, the potential benefits and safety of using fortified manufactured baby foods versus traditional foods alone are evaluated based on evidence from food composition data, diet modeling and intervention studies. Results from the food composition data and diet modeling suggest tha

Predictors of Food Sensitization in Children and Adults Across Europe.

BACKGROUND: The geographical variation and temporal increase in the prevalence of food sensitization (FS) suggest environmental influences. OBJECTIVE: To investigate how environment, infant diet, and demographic characteristics, are associated with FS in children and adults, focusing on early-life exposures. METHODS: Data on childhood and adult environmental exposures (including, among others, sibship size, day care, pets, farm environment, and smoking), infant diet (including breast-feeding and timing of introduction to infant formula and solids), and demographic characteristics were collec

Iodine supplementation of lactating women and assessment of infant visual information processing and maternal and infant thyroid function: A randomized trial.

Iodine deficiency is one of the major causes of brain damage in childhood. However, iodine supplementation during early pregnancy and lactation can prevent the ill effects of iodine deficiency. This study evaluated maternal and infant thyroid function and infant visual information processing (VIP) in the context of maternal iodine supplementation. A community-based, randomized, supplementation trial was conducted. Mother infant dyads (n = 106) were enrolled within the first 10 days after delivery to participate in this study. Mothers were randomly assigned either to receive a potassium iodide

Content analysis of nutritional information in paediatric oral health education leaflets.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine if paediatric oral health education leaflets with a food and nutritional focus provide messages that are clear and consistent with the current Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Infant Feeding Guidelines. METHODS: Forty-three leaflets aimed at parents were sourced from Australian state and territory Health Departments, oral health industry partners and commercial organisations, and a content analysis was performed. Recommendations on food and drink type, consumption frequency and general diet and nutrition advice were considered and cross-

Maternal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response to foraging uncertainty: A model of individual vs. social allostasis and the "Superorganism Hypothesis".

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity is a major global contributor to developmental origins of adult disease. The allostatic load of maternal food uncertainty from variable foraging demand (VFD) activates corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) without eliciting hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activation measured on a group level. Individual homeostatic adaptations of the HPA axis may subserve second-order homeostasis, a process we provisionally term "social allostasis." We postulate that maternal food insecurity induces a "superorganism" state through coordination of individual HPA axis response.

Dietary exposures and allergy prevention in high-risk infants: A joint statement with the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Allergic conditions in children are a prevalent health concern in Canada. The burden of disease and the societal costs of proper diagnosis and management are considerable, making the primary prevention of allergic conditions a desirable health care objective. This position statement reviews current evidence on dietary exposures and allergy prevention in infants at high risk for developing allergic conditions. It revisits previous dietary recommendations for pregnancy, breastfeeding and formula feeding, and provides an approach for introducing solid foods to high-risk infants. While there is no

Association of food allergy in children with vitamin D insufficiency: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Current literature regarding the association of vitamin D insufficiency and food allergy is contradicting. The purpose of our study was to investigate this association. This is a systematic review and meta-analysis according to the PRISMA statement. PubMeD and Scopus databases were systematically searched for case-control studies investigating the association between pediatric food allergy and vitamin D insufficiency. Our search yielded 806 studies. Ten final studies were considered eligible for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Children with vitamin D insufficiency were found to have 68%

Clinical Characteristics of Infants Under Two Years of Age with Early Sensitization to House Dust Mites.

Background: Early-life sensitization to house dust mites (HDMs) is a recognized risk factor for adverse respiratory allergic outcomes. Methods: We investigated the clinical characteristics of infants under two years of age who visited our allergy clinic for evaluation with detectable HDM-specific IgE (sIgE) and compared them to HDM-sIgE-negative infants. Results: Among 1793 infants tested for HDM sIgE, 96 (5.4%) demonstrated sensitization. In the HDM-positive cohort, the prevalence of atopic dermatitis was 74.0% (90.9% among those <12 months), food allergy was 57.3% (100% among those <12 month

Allergenicity of food proteins and its possible modification.

All food proteins, taken via the oral route, are likely to be allergenic to some degree, but this usually leads to no untoward effects. Over the last decade excellent immunoassay methods have been developed that are suitable for measuring anti-food protein antibodies of different isotypes. General systemic and local tissue sensitivity to food antigens may also be measured by appropriate methods. All the circumstances (e.g., amount of ingestant, conditions in the gut, selective immunodeficiencies, gut permeability and genetic factors) determining heightened allergic responses are not yet fully

Degradation of food-derived opioid peptides by bifidobacteria.

Some food-derived opioid peptides have been reported to cause diseases, such as gastrointestinal inflammation, celiac disease, and mental disorders. Bifidobacterium is a major member of the dominant human gut microbiota, particularly in the gut of infants. In this study, we evaluated the potential of Bifidobacterium in the degradation of food-derived opioid peptides. All strains tested showed some level of dipeptidyl peptidase activity, which is thought to be involved in the degradation of food-derived opioid peptides. However, this activity was higher in bifidobacterial strains that are commo

Prevention of food allergies.

Any rational approach to the prevention of food allergies must be based on the diversity of mechanisms which are involved in their pathogenesis. In addition to the IgE-mediated disorders which appear to be responsible for the largest number of cases, other immunologic (e.g., immune complex) and non-immunologic (e.g., enzymatic deficiencies) mechanisms appear to be involved. A preventive program should begin with a recognition that a potential problem exists and the identification of the individual at risk. This is accomplished by a careful documentation of IgE or other allergic reactivity in t

Recurring Facial Erythema in an Infant.

Causes of facial rashes and erythema in infants are many but rarely only happen during feeding times which are commonly and sometimes wrongly attributed to food allergy. There is a rare condition called Auriculotemporal nerve syndrome that is characterized by recurrent episodes of gustatory facial flushing and sweating along the cutaneous distribution of Auriculotemporal nerve: the so-called Frey syndrome. This condition is most frequently observed in adults usually after parotid surgery. It is rare in children and is mostly attributed to forceps assisted delivery. It can also be misinterprete
