Impact of extensively hydrolyzed infant formula on the probiotic and postbiotic properties of Lactobacillus fermentum in an in vitro co-culture model.

Early gut homeostasis is a balance between dietary antigen exposure, gut barrier function, microbiome establishment and orchestration of innate and adaptive immune responses. Imbalances during this early time of development can lead to increased susceptibility to immune reactions like allergy. Especially for infants with a predisposition to allergies and who cannot be exclusively breastfed, there are different human milk substitutes, including hydrolyzed infant formula, which are supposed to prevent allergy-associated mechanisms. The physiologic mechanism beyond the destruction of cow's milk a…

Enrichment of infant formula with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and risk of infection and allergy in the nationwide ELFE birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: The new European regulations require the enrichment of formulas with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) because of the positive effects of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) on neurodevelopment and visual acuity. In this observational study, we aimed to evaluate whether the consumption of LCPUFA-enriched formula was associated with the risk of infection and allergy in early childhood. METHODS: Analyses involved data from 8389 formula-fed infants from the ELFE birth cohort. Formula enrichment was identified from the list of ingredients of the formula consumed at 2 months. Inf

Ability of a new infant formula prepared from partially hydrolyzed bovine whey to induce anaphylactic sensitization: evaluation in a guinea pig model.

In the present study we evaluated the allergenicity and immunogenicity of a whey partially hydrolysate formula (PHF) in a guinea pig model. Nine groups of 10 guinea pigs received either a conventional milk formula (CMF) or PHF for 37 days. After intravenous (i.v.) challenge with either beta-lactoglobulin (beta-L) or ultracentrifuged (u)CMF, animals fed CMF showed, respectively, 80% and 100% fatal reactions, whereas animals fed PHF showed no reactions when i.v. challenged both with beta-L and uPHF. Eighty percent fatal reactions, and 10%, respectively, of severe and mild reactions have been obs

Osmolality and molar mass of oligosaccharides in breast milks and infant formula during hydrolysis of lactose. Application of high-resolution ultrasonic spectroscopy.

β-Galactosidase formulations can be added to infant milks prior to feeding to reduce the level of lactose and to avoid symptoms of lactose intolerance. The hydrolysis of lactose affects osmolality, which is an important property of infant milk. This paper introduces novel ultrasonic technology for precision, real-time, non-destructive monitoring of osmolality of infant milks, including breast milk, during enzymatic hydrolysis of lactose by supplemental β-galactosidases. This technology can be utilised in the development and testing of β-galactosidase formulations. Additionally, ultrasonic real

Weight gain in the first week of life and overweight in adulthood: a cohort study of European American subjects fed infant formula.

BACKGROUND: Successful prevention of obesity and related cardiovascular risk factors requires a clear understanding of its determinants over the life course. Rapid infancy weight gain is associated with childhood obesity, whereas low infancy weight is associated with coronary heart disease. Our aim was to identify during which periods in infancy weight gain is associated with adult obesity. METHODS AND RESULTS: A cohort of European American formula-fed subjects, measured on 7 occasions during infancy as part of several infant formula studies, were contacted at age 20 to 32 years, when they re…

The effects of breastfeeding and formula feeding on the metabolic factors and the expression level of obesity and diabetes-predisposing genes in healthy infants.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity are common illnesses characterized by glucose metabolism issues and excessive weight gain. Breastfeeding is the best way to feed a newborn up to 6 months old and it has been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes and obesity later in life due to its nutritional properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of breastfeeding, formula feeding, and formula-plus breastfeeding (mix-feeding) on the anthropometric indices, metabolic variables, and the expression level of obesity and diabetes-predisposing genes of healthy infants. A total of 150 h

High versus low medium chain triglyceride content of formula for promoting short-term growth of preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: In-hospital growth of preterm infants remains a challenge in clinical practice. The high nutrient demands of preterm infants often lead to growth faltering. For preterm infants who cannot be fed maternal or donor breast milk or may require supplementation, preterm formulas with fat in the form of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) or long chain triglycerides (LCTs) may be chosen to support nutrient utilization and to improve growth. MCTs are easily accessible to the preterm infant with an immature digestive system, and LCTs are beneficial for central nervous system development and v

Lower Protein Intake Supports Normal Growth of Full-Term Infants Fed Formula: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Infant formulas have been conventionally prepared with an excess of total protein in order to provide sufficient amounts of essential amino acids to the rapidly growing infant. However, this practice leads to higher than necessary protein intake during early infant development, inducing accelerated growth patterns correlated with the development of chronic diseases later in life. This study was aimed at assessing the safety of an infant formula enriched with bovine alpha-lactalbumin containing a total protein concentration very close to that of human milk, and determining its efficacy in the s…
