Neonatal morbidity pattern in infants born in Benin City to Nigerian mothers with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy are worldwide in distribution with an incidence that names depending on hospital population and criteria cited for diagnosis METHODS: In a case-control study, the neonatal morbidities of 256 live newborn infants of hypertensive mother were compared with those of 804 infants ofnormotensive mothers. RESULTS: The incidence of some neonatal morbidities such as birth asphyxia, neonatal seizures, neonatal polycythaemia and hyperbilirubinaemia were significantly higher among babies born to hypertensive mothers compared with those born to their normote

The Fetal Region-specific Optimized Growth Standard (FROGS)-A fetal and birthweight centile calculator validated in a national population.

BACKGROUND: There is no universally agreed upon obstetric growth standard for use during pregnancy. We aimed to design a simple novel growth standard, which incorporates key beneficial features identified in prior research. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We developed the Fetal Region-specific Optimized Growth Standard (FROGS), then validated it following International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) guidelines. FROGS follows the shape of the fetal (ultrasound-based) Hadlock curve. It is region-specific; allowing adjustment for the mean birthweight and standard deviation of babies born

[Impact of parenting behavior relevant to infant's sleep on maternal sleep and health].

BACKGROUND: Maternal health is affected by infant's sleep problems like night awakening or bedtime difficulties. Previous studies indicated that infant's sleep problems are affected by particular parenting behaviour (hereinafter referred to as parenting). However, the relation between maternal sleep and infant's sleep has been unclear and there is only limited information on the interaction between parenting, infant's sleep, maternal sleep, and maternal health. The purpose of this study was: 1. to examine the relationship between infant's sleep problems and maternal sleep and health; and 2. to

An event history analysis of recurrent child maltreatment reports in Florida.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to (a) describe the timing of maltreatment recurrence and (b) measure associations between child demographics and characteristics of initial reports with recurrent maltreatment. METHOD: Using administrative data from the Florida Department of Children and Families, case histories of 189,375 children with an initial maltreatment report in 1998 or 1999 were examined using event history techniques, also known as survival analysis, to assess the relationship between predictor variables and the likelihood and timing of recurrence. Specifically, data were an

Children's out-of-home care in Finland, 1993-2020: lifetime risks, expectancies, exit routes, and number of placements for synthetic cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Population level studies rarely include multiple dimensions of the out-of-home care (OHC) experience, which are important for understanding the nuanced experiences of children and families. Multiple dimensions of OHC journeys can be measured without birth cohort data using the synthetic cohort approach, which summarizes contemporary risks of OHC for a synthetic cohort. METHODS: We use register data on all children born in Finland in 1980-2020 (n = 2,747,803) and link them with the Register of Child Welfare (OHC episodes n = 305,045). We fit discrete-time multistate models to estim

Severe obesity in young women and reproductive health: the Danish National Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about reproductive health in severely obese women. In this study, we present associations between different levels of severe obesity and a wide range of health outcomes in the mother and child. METHODS: From the Danish National Birth Cohort, we obtained self-reported information about prepregnant body mass index (BMI) for 2451 severely obese women and 2450 randomly selected women from the remaining cohort who served as a comparison group. Information about maternal and infant outcomes was also self-reported or came from registers. Logistic regression was used to es

Paraplegia following percutaneous balloon angioplasty of aortic coarctation: a case report.

Balloon angioplasty of recurrent coarctation of the aorta is considered a low-risk procedure with high success rate. In the literature, the major complications are death, rupture of the aorta, recoarctation, aneurysm formation, cerebrovascular accident, and femoral artery thrombosis. Spinal cord ischemia as an unusual complication of balloon angioplasty is reported.

[Anaphylactic shock in the infant].

Anaphylactic shock is a life-threatening allergic reaction with cardiovascular collapse. The cardiovascular collapse may occur suddenly without warning signs or may be preceded by symptoms such as pruritus, wheezing, dyspnea, urticaria, pallor, digestive symptoms, and weakness. Food allergens, injected drugs and hymenoptera stings are the main etiologies. Anaphylactic shock requires an emergency treatment with immediate intramuscular or subcutaneous epinephrine injection. Subsequent avoidance of the inciting allergens is mandatory together with the availability of a first aid kit including rea

[Prevalence of Hepatitis B serologic markers among the personnel of the institution for children with deficiencies].

BACKGROUND: The risk of infection by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in institutions for children with deficiencies has been established in several studies. The purpose of this work was to know the prevalence of HBV markers, among the employees in an institution of that kind, and its association with several risk factors. METHODS: A transveral epidemiologic survey has been carried out to determine the markers prevalence of infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV) and its association with certain risk factors, among the 200 workers of an institution for children with deficiencies. Determinations, by r

Material awareness on natural feeding.

INTRODUCTION: Natural breastfeeding is the only proper way to feed newborns and infants because it ensures their proper development. Breastfeeding enhances health and protects against the development of many diseases in childhood and adulthood. The primary benefits of breastfeeding include reduced incidences of infection in the respiratory system as well as a reduction in gastrointestinal and systemic infections. The benefits of breastfeeding also include decreased inflammation and improved immunity to disease in the infant. Further benefits of breastfeeding are reduced incidences of type 1 di

Infant seizures not so infantile: first-time seizures in children under six months of age presenting to the ED.

Data regarding first-time seizures in children <or=6 months of age is limited. This retrospective study, therefore, reviews the presentation, management, and outcome of children <or=6 months of age presenting to a pediatric tertiary care facility with a first-time seizure. Charts for 31 patients were identified and reviewed. Nineteen patients (61%) received sepsis work-ups. Two of the 31 (7%) had infectious etiologies. One of these infants, a 3-month-old who presented with only a history of fever and eyes rolling back but otherwise appeared well on initial presentation, had pneumococcal mening

Successful breastfeeding after discharge of preterm and sick newborn infants.

AIM: To determine the extent and duration of breastfeeding in preterm and sick newborn infants admitted to a level IIb neonatal unit (NU). METHOD: Hospital-based follow-up of 1730 infants born in 1996, 2001 and 2004, and studied from discharge to 6 months of post-natal age. RESULTS: At discharge from the NU, 98% of term (n = 945) and 92% of preterm (n = 785) infants were exclusively or partly breastfed. Exclusive breastfeeding increased at 2 months of corrected post-natal age and 78% of term infants were still exclusively or partly breastfed at 6 months of corrected post-natal age. Duration

Current research in preterm birth.

Preterm birth is one of the leading causes of infant mortality and the leading cause of infant morbidity in the United States. It accounts for >70% of neonatal deaths and almost half of long-term neurological disabilities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is collaborating with state health departments, universities, communities, and healthcare providers to understand why preterm births occur and how to address preterm birth risk factors. These collaborations include identification of genetic and other biological markers for the early detection of women at high risk of prete

'Enough is enough': qualitative findings on the impact of dexamethasone during reinduction/consolidation for paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

The results of a longitudinal study conducted with children undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and their families in Brisbane, Australia, indicate that the emotional impact of one of the protocol drugs, dexamethasone, is acutely distressing. The findings presented cover the second interviews with the parents and children of the first 11 ALL families to have completed the re-consolidation stage of treatment. The results indicate that the negative impact of this drug is particularly severe during the reconsolidation stage, when families are exhausted with coping with th

Experiences and outcomes of maternal Ramadan fasting during pregnancy: results from a sub-cohort of the Born in Bradford birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Observing the fast during the holy month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Although pregnant women and those with pre-existing illness are exempted from fasting many still choose to fast during this time. The fasting behaviours of pregnant Muslim women resident in Western countries remain largely unexplored and relationships between fasting behaviour and offspring health outcomes remain contentious. This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence, characteristics of fasting behaviours and offspring health outcomes in Asian and Asian British Muslim women within a UK
