Intravenous nutrition of the newborn has, in the past, been troubled with metabolic and infective complications. The metabolic disorders have been minimised with newer solutions and by careful administration, particularly when using infusion pumps. Greater awareness and experience has reduced infection to levels associated with conventional intravenous therapy. Intravenous feeding is now a practical and safe form of therapy for minimising weight loss in newborns who cannot feed by mouth, and may be life-saving in the post-surgical infants and in those with malabsorption syndromes.

The present study determined the effect of chronic PPA infusion and withdrawal on weight regulation. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received PPA (0, 90 or 180 mg/kg) via miniosmotic pumps for 2 weeks. Body weight and food and water consumption were measured daily before, during, and for 2 weeks after PPA infusion. Additionally, body weight was measured once 6 weeks after the last day of drug administration. It remains open to debate whether hyperinsulinemia leads to the development of hypertension. We addressed this issue by investigating the effect of chronic insulin infusion on blood pressure and related parameters in hypertensive fructose-fed rats. Rats were given either normal chow or a fructose-rich diet, and insulin or saline was infused through mini-pumps in the same animals for 14 days. The chronic insulin infusion exerted no effect on the blood pressure of the chow-fed rats. Fructose feeding increased the blood pressure and levels of insulin, triglyceride and fatty acid. Wolfram syndrome (WS), or DIDMOAD (diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, and deafness), is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder with a median life expectancy of 30 years and occurs in one in 770,000 live births. The case of a 50 year-old woman who developed a sudden decrease in arterial pressure while she was being prepared for surgery for a fractured lumbar spine in the prone position, is reported. She was receiving propofol, remifentanil, and sodium nitroprusside via three syringe pumps through an intravenous cannula at the dorsum of her left hand. The authors report a case of idiopathic priapism successfully treated by needle aspiration and continuous perfusion with heparin solution. Two suprapubic cystostomy sets (Cystofix) for punction and drainage of each cavernosal body, were used. The original cystostomy tubes were inserted in the penis and attached to the continuous flow perfusion system. After the operation priapism disappeared and the penis was flaccid during the three days of perfusion. Two months after the operation, the patient had normal erections.

The single-dose absorption kinetics of ciprofloxacin in different regions of the human gastrointestinal tract were investigated using a remote-control drug delivery device (HF-capsule).
