What happens to old insecticide-treated nets after households use in Burkina Faso?

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are the most commonly deployed tools for controlling malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. However, some reports associate multiple alternative uses of nets with poor disposal practices, prompting this study to assess existing alternative uses and disposal practices of old ITNs in Burkina Faso after four universal distribution campaigns. METHODS: A quantitative survey combined with qualitative data collection was used to describe existing alternative uses and disposal practices for old ITNs in households from selected study sites in the three

Analysis of the 24-h biting patterns and human exposures to malaria vectors in south-eastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Afrotropical malaria vectors are generally believed to bite nocturnally, leading to the predominant use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), which target indoor, nighttime-biting mosquitoes. This focus is reinforced by biases in entomological surveys, which largely overlook daytime mosquito activity. However, recent evidence challenges this paradigm, showing that Anopheles biting can extend way into the daytime, coinciding with human activities at dawn, daytime and evenings, suggesting a broader risk spectrum and potential protection gaps. We have therefore investigated the diurnal

Malaria epidemiology and control in Southern Africa.

The burden of malaria has decreased dramatically within the past several years in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, following the scale-up of interventions supported by the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, the President's Malaria Initiative and other partners. It is important to appreciate that the reductions in malaria have not been uniform between and within countries, with some areas experiencing resurgence instead. Furthermore, while interventions have greatly reduced the burden of malaria in many countries, it is also recognized that the malaria decline pre-dated widespread intervention efforts,

Why some sites are responding better to anti-malarial interventions? A case study from western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, malaria interventions over the last decades have been successful in reducing both mortality and morbidity. In western Kenya however some areas experience contrasting outcomes of the ongoing interventions while the causes for this observation remains not yet clearly known. METHODS: The WHO insecticide (deltamethrin) susceptibility test of the common malaria vectors was studied. Multiple surveys on household use and hospital prescriptions of antimalarial drugs from 2003 to 2015 were done. Along with this, cross sectional surveys on their availability in the lo

[Late impact of lambdacyhalothrin-treated nets on kdr allelic frequency in Anopheles gambiae s.s. (Diptera: Culicidae) from northern Côte-d'Ivoire].

Nets treated with lambdacyhalothrin 15 mg a.i./m2 were distributed in four villages of Korhogo area in northern Côte-d'Ivoire, and four other villages without nets were followed as controls. Mosquitoes were collected every three months from June 1999 to August 2000 in the villages, and then tested to determine their genotypes for kdr mutation L1014F conferring cross-resistance to pyrethroids and DDT and for M and S molecular forms of Anopheles gambiae s.s. The frequencies of the resistant allele at kdr mutation L1014F locus were very high and they varied from 0.82 to 0.96. Before the trial, th

Indoor residual spraying household visits as a platform for engaging pregnant women in malaria prevention on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to many health conditions, including infectious diseases, which place them at elevated risk of severe outcomes. In particular, malaria poses a significant burden during pregnancy, and as such there has long been a strong focus on delivering malaria prevention interventions to pregnant women during antenatal care (ANC), including long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp). However, outreach to drive uptake of these interventions presents some distinct challenges. For example, preg

Evaluation of a mass distribution programme for fine-mesh impregnated bednets against visceral leishmaniasis in eastern Sudan.

During an epidemic of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in eastern Sudan, Médecins Sans Frontières distributed 357,000 insecticide-treated bednets (ITN) to 155 affected villages between May 1999 and March 2001. To estimate the protective effect of the ITN, we evaluated coverage and use of ITN, and analysed VL incidence by village from March 1996 to June 2002. We provided ITN to 94% of the individuals >5 years old. Two years later, 44% (95% CI 39-48%) of nets were reasonably intact. Because ITN were mainly used as protection against nuisance mosquitoes, bednet use during the VL transmission season ra…

Implications of insecticide resistance for malaria vector control with long-lasting insecticidal nets: evidence from health facility data from Benin.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-based interventions have averted more than 500 million malaria cases since 2000, but insecticide resistance in mosquitoes could bring about a rebound in disease and mortality. This study investigated whether insecticide resistance was associated with increased incidence of clinical malaria. METHODS: In an area of southern Benin with insecticide resistance and high use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), malaria morbidity and insecticide resistance were measured simultaneously in 30 clusters (villages or collections of villages) multiple times over the course of 2 years

Malaria.

Malaria is caused in humans by five species of single-celled eukaryotic Plasmodium parasites (mainly Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax) that are transmitted by the bite of Anopheles spp. mosquitoes. Malaria remains one of the most serious infectious diseases; it threatens nearly half of the world's population and led to hundreds of thousands of deaths in 2015, predominantly among children in Africa. Malaria is managed through a combination of vector control approaches (such as insecticide spraying and the use of insecticide-treated bed nets) and drugs for both treatment and prevention

Visceral leishmaniasis: a forgotten epidemic.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL or kala-azar) is most endemic in Asia and Africa and commonly affects young children. It is usually caused by Leishmania donovani or Leishmania infantum that are transmitted by Phlebotomine sand flies. Transmission may be anthroponotic or zoonotic or both, depending on the endemic area. Clinical features include fever, hepatosplenomegaly, weight loss and pancytopenia. Younger age, malnutrition and immunosuppression (HIV infection, use of immunosuppressive drugs) are risk factors. Many infections remain asymptomatic. Diagnosis is made by demonstration of the Leishmani

Enhanced protection against malaria by indoor residual spraying in addition to insecticide treated nets: is it dependent on transmission intensity or net usage?

BACKGROUND: Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) are effective vector control tools that protect against malaria. There is conflicting evidence regarding whether using ITNs and IRS in combination provides additional benefit over using either of these methods alone. This study investigated factors that may modify the effect of the combined use of IRS and ITNs compared to using ITNs alone on malaria infection prevalence. METHODS: Secondary analysis was carried out on data from a cluster randomised trial in north-west Tanzania. 50 clusters received ITNs from a unive

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices about kala-azar and its sandfly vector in rural communities of Nepal.

Reported are the results of a study of the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) about kala-azar of the inhabitants of two villages (Titaria and Haraincha) situated in terai (plain) areas of Nepal. The villagers had poor knowledge about the transmission of kala-azar, with most villagers perceiving that mosquitos, instead of sandflies, were responsible for transmission of the infection. Most also failed to recognize the common symptoms of kala-azar. The majority of the respondents, 78.9% in Titaria and 48.4% in Haraincha, were aware that the condition can be treated, while fewer than 2% beli

Insights from LLIN post-distribution monitoring surveys in the malaria transmission foci of the Dominican Republic: implications for quantification and distribution strategies.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have been distributed and installed in the Dominican Republic since 2008, and they remain the main vector control intervention used to pursue malaria elimination in the country. However, LLIN performance remains unclear due to a lack of monitoring over the past decade. METHODS: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted to monitor LLIN coverage, access, use, physical integrity, washing and drying practices, and the time people go to bed and wake up in the two main malaria foci of the country: Azua (4-6 months post-distribution and insta

Perception of caregivers on ITNs utilisation and its effectiveness among children under 5 years of age in Chikwawa district, Malawi.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, Malawi had 6.9 million malaria cases and 2551 deaths, mainly in children under five years of age. The 2017-2022 Malawi malaria control strategic plan promoted the consistent use of insecticide-treated nets through free distribution and mass campaigns. Despite widespread availability of the control strategy plan, Chikwawa District continues to suffer from high malaria burden especially among under five children, due to inconsistent insecticide-treated (ITN) net usage. For this reason, this study aimed at exploring caregivers' perceptions on insecticide-treated net utilisati

Impact Evaluation of Malaria Control Interventions on Morbidity and All-Cause Child Mortality in Rwanda, 2000-2010.

The impressive decline in child mortality that occurred in Rwanda from 1996-2000 to 2006-2010 coincided with a period of rapid increase of malaria control interventions such as indoor residual spraying (IRS); insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution and use, and improved malaria case management. The impact of these interventions was examined through ecological correlation analysis, and robust decomposition analysis of contextual factors on all-cause child mortality. Child mortality fell 61% during the evaluation period and prevalence of severe anemia in children 6-23 months declined 71% betw

Measuring the association between artemisinin-based case management and malaria incidence in southern Vietnam, 1991-2010.

In addition to being effective, fast-acting, and well tolerated, artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are able to kill certain transmission stages of the malaria parasite. However, the population-level impacts of ACTs on reducing malaria transmission have been difficult to assess. In this study on the history of malaria control in Vietnam, we assemble annual reporting on malaria case counts, coverage with insecticide-treated nets (ITN) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), and drug purchases by provincial malaria control programs from 1991 to 2010 in Vietnam's 20 southern provinces.
