International Collaboration for the Prosthetic and Surgical Intervention of Velopharyngeal Insufficiency.

Interdisciplinary teamwork is essential for the rehabilitation of patients with cleft lip and palate, and therefore, the application of treatment techniques for velopharyngeal insufficiency, both surgical and prosthetic, depends on the experience of each rehabilitation team. For this reason, the following study consisting of the cooperation between interdisciplinary cleft lip and palate teams from Chile and Argentina, which succeeded in correcting velopharyngeal insufficiency in an adolescent, initially using a pharyngeal bulb prosthesis and speech therapy, and finally through pharyngeal flap

Mastocytosis: Part II: Diagnosis and Management of Mastocytosis through a Multidisciplinary Lens.

Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous disorder marked by mast cell accumulation in various organs, presenting differently in children and adults. Red or brown maculopapular lesions on the skin should raise suspicion for mastocytosis. In children, presentations include solitary lesions (mastocytoma) or diffuse erythema (diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis). Adults often require bone marrow biopsies for a definitive diagnosis of systemic mastocytosis. Skin biopsies typically reveal mast cell hyperplasia and cytologic abnormalities. Given skin manifestations, dermatologists play a critical role in initial d

Hypoglossal nerve stimulation for obstructive sleep apnea: updated position paper of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.

Since the first statement of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) is meanwhile an established treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). There are three HNS systems available in Germany which differ in their technical details of the underlying comparable basic principle. For the unilateral HNS with respiratory sensing, several comparative studies, high-volume register analysis and long-term reports exist. The continuous HNS without respiratory sensing does not require a sleep endoscopy for indication. For the bilateral continuous HNS as the

[Surgical therapy of extracranial carotid stenosis].

The surgical therapy for severe stenosis of the carotid provides a highly effective prophylaxis for carotid dependent ischemic strokes. After carrying out prospective, randomised studies, evidence based indications for carotid thromboarterectomy are available. Here, it is necesary to take into account the degree of stenosis, an initial clinical symptom (amaurosis fugax, TIA, stroke), and postoperative risk. This can not exceed 3% by asymptomatic and 6% by symptomatic stenoses in order not to endanger the carotid thromboarterectomy. Stenting of carotid stenoses provides a possible alternative t

Pelvic insufficiency fractures in the elderly - what insights has the past year of research brought? A narrative review.

Pelvic insufficiency fractures (PIFs) are low-energy fractures typically occurring in osteoporotic bone and are associated with significant morbidity, reduced quality of life, and increased mortality. PIF requires individualized, often interdisciplinary treatment strategies combining surgical, conservative, and systemic approaches. This narrative review aims to summarize recent findings on the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of PIFs and place them in the context of existing literature. For this purpose, a selective literature search was conducted in January 2025 to identify publications on

[Cardiovasular diseases and multimorbidity].

Cardiovascular diseases such as arteriosclerosis, arterial hypertension, heart failure or atrial fibrillation are most prevalent in advanced age and usually occur in combination with multimorbidity and functional deficits. Recommendations from guidelines can therefore only be applied to these patient groups to a limited extent. Due to the complexity and vulnerability of multimorbid, older adults, an interdisciplinary approach to care is required. For the future, there is a great need for studies that include these patient groups, also taking into account other outcome parameters.

How do interdisciplinary practitioners conceptualize infection control in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic?

AIM: During the recent global pandemic, nursing home (NH) residents were among the most vulnerable, yet empirical insights into how practitioners conceptualized and implemented infection control in NHs were limited. This study aimed to explore the ways in which interdisciplinary NH practitioners understood and conceptualized infection control in response to emerging infectious diseases and to identify a structural framework derived from their perceptions. DESIGN: A qualitative phenomenographic research design was employed. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 interdisciplinary

The intersection of colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease: shared mechanisms and clinical implications.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are major contributors to the global disease burden, with CRC as the third most common malignancy and second leading cause of cancer-related death, and CVD as the top killer among non-communicable diseases. The growing ageing population has driven a continuous rise in CRC-CVD comorbidity. Treatment-related cardiovascular toxicity, shared pathophysiological links, and the prognostic impact of comorbidity have made this interdisciplinary field a critical focus in cardio-oncology. This review addresses core scientific questions at the CRC-C

What is known and what is still unknown within chronic musculoskeletal pain? A systematic evidence and gap map.

Evidence and gap maps (EGMs) can be used to identify gaps within specific research areas and help guide future research agendas and directions. Currently, there are no EGMs within the broad domain of chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain in adults. The aim of this study was to create a contemporary EGM of interventions and outcomes used for research investigating chronic MSK pain. This EGM was based on systematic reviews of interventions published in scientific journals within the past 20 years. Embase, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO were used to retrieve studies for inclusion. The qu

High Molecular Diagnosis Rate in Undermasculinized Males with Differences in Sex Development Using a Stepwise Approach.

Differences of sex development (DSDs) are a constellation of conditions that result in genital ambiguity or complete sex reversal. Although determining the underlying genetic variants can affect clinical management, fewer than half of undermasculinized males ever receive molecular diagnoses. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology has improved diagnostic capabilities in several other diseases, and a few small studies suggest that it may improve molecular diagnostic capabilities in DSDs. However, the overall diagnostic rate that can be achieved with NGS for larger groups of patients with DS

Collaboration Between Endocrinologists and Dentists in the Care of Patients with Acromegaly-A Narrative Review.

Acromegaly is caused by an excessive secretion of growth hormone and the secondary elevation of IGF-1 levels, leading to progressive changes in multiple body systems, including the craniofacial region and oral cavity. Dental manifestations such as mandibular overgrowth, macroglossia, malocclusion, periodontal disease, and prosthetic difficulties represent not only a clinical component of the disease but also a significant therapeutic and diagnostic challenge. The aim of this review is to present the current state of knowledge on the relationship between acromegaly and oral health and to analyz
