Adenocarcinoma of the rectum with associated colorectal adenomatous polyps in tuberous sclerosis: a case report.

The authors present the case of a 17-year-old girl with tuberous sclerosis (TS) who presented with symptoms of intussusception. Although endoscopically diagnosed with multiple colonic polyps, presumed to be hamartomas, and an invasive rectal adenocarcinoma, postoperative pathology findings confirmed the rectal cancer and showed multiple colonic adenomas. Multiple colonic adenomatous polyps in a young girl with tuberous sclerosis is extremely rare. Furthermore, we believe that this is the first report of an invasive adenocarcinoma of the large intestine occurring in a patient with TS.

Histopathological study using computer database of 10 000 consecutive gastric specimens: (1) benign conditions.

Using a computer database, the author investigated the histopathology of 10 000 consecutive gastric specimens, taken in the last 12 years (2002-2013) at the pathology laboratory of a Japanese hospital. Re-observation of the already examined histological sections was done when the histological diagnosis and findings on the computer data base were not very obvious. The gastric specimens were identified as 8579 benign conditions and 1421 malignant lesions. The 8579 benign conditions were comprised almost normal stomach in 74 cases (0.9%), chronic gastritis in 4374 (51.0%), benign gastric peptic u

The chemopreventive effect of withaferin A on spontaneous and inflammation-associated colon carcinogenesis models.

Chemopreventive effects and associated mechanisms of withaferin A (WA) against intestinal and colon carcinogenesis remain unknown. We investigated the chemopreventive effect of WA on transgenic adenomatous polyposis coli (APCMin/+) mouse and chemically induced azoxymethane/dextran sodium sulfate (AOM/DSS) models of intestinal and colon carcinogenesis. Oral WA administration (4 and 3 mg/kg) inhibited tumor initiation and progression of intestinal polyps formation in APCMin/+ mice and colon carcinogenesis in the AOM/DSS mouse model. WA-administered mice showed a significant reduction in both num

Impact of umbilical polyp resection: A report and literature review.

The preferred treatment for this lesion should be the total resection of the umbilical polyp with a mini-laparotomy because residual intestinal mucosa at the umbilicus can be confirmed to eliminate the risk of recurrence.

A Colonic Perineurioma.

Perineurioma is a mesenchymal neoplasm best known in soft-tissue pathology. A colonic perineurioma is a relatively recently described entity and sometimes encountered in specimens from the large intestine, especially distal colon. Without its recognition, a perineurioma can be misdiagnosed as other more common gastrointestinal spindle cell neoplasms. Here, we describe a case of colonic perineurioma with polypoid growth extruding into the intestinal lumen. Case. A woman in her seventh decade of life underwent a follow-up colonoscopy after an uneventful resection of a benign colonic polyp. A pre

Rare cause of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding due to pyogenic granuloma in the ileum detected by capsule endoscopy and treated with double balloon endoscopy.

Pyogenic granuloma is a lobular capillary hemangioma that occurs mostly on the skin, and occasionally on the mucosal surface of the oral cavity, but very rarely in the gastrointestinal tract. We report the case of a 63-year-old woman who suffered from palpitations, and iron deficiency anemia for 5 years. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy could not reveal significant bleeding focus. She had not received medical treatment except for oral iron. Capsule endoscopy revealed a bleeding focus in the small intestine. Afterwards, we carried out double balloon endoscopy to treat the lesion. We f

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. A case report.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an unusual hamartomatous polyposis of the gastro intestinal (GI) tract, with pigmentation around lips and macules on the buccal mucosa. The case of a 10-year-old girl who presented with intussusception is reported. A polyp was found to be the cause of an invagination. Histologically it was a hamartoma. PJS is a rare syndrome inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Most patients have recurrent episodes of polyp induced bowel intussusception which requires repeated laparotomies. In addition, these patients have an increased risk of malignant disease in gastroi

Schistosomiasis manifesting as a colon polyp: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis is a rare disease with a common intestinal involvement. However, colon polyps associated with Schistosoma in the absence of inflammation have rarely been reported, especially in young people; this is the first case with the following presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 20-year-old Ethiopian woman living in Lebanon who presented with nonspecific abdominal symptoms. Her biochemical profile was normal in addition to the results of her stool and urine tests. A colonoscopy showed normal colonic mucosa but surprisingly a large pedunculated polyp

In vivo imaging of Lgr5-positive cell populations using confocal laser endomicroscopy during early colon tumorigenesis.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: A diagnostic molecular marker for pre-neoplastic lesions, particularly before polyposis, is still lacking. Lgr5 has been broadly accepted as a marker for intestinal cancer stem cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the monitoring of Lgr5( + ) cells as a useful tool for the early diagnosis of premalignant lesions before polyp formation. METHODS: In vivo molecular imaging was performed to examine colon tumorigenesis in Lgr5-EGFP mice treated with azoxymethane and dextran sodium sulfate. eGFP( +) Lgr5( +) regions in the descending colon were longitudinally mo

Ileocolic intussusception precipitated by diagnostic colonoscopy: a case report.

Only 5% of all cases of intussusceptions occur in adults. Intussusception complicating colonoscopy is an extremely rare event. Herein, we present a case of a 58-year-old man who developed ileocolic intussusception after a colonoscopy during which an adenomatous polyp was discovered in the terminal ileum. Eight hours after colonoscopy, the patient developed diffuse abdominal pain associated with vomiting and bloody diarrhea. A contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography scan revealed features of mechanical intestinal obstruction and a round soft tissue mass inside the right colon, followed

Novel read through agent: ZKN-0013 demonstrates efficacy in APCmin model of familial adenomatous polyposis.

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a precancerous, colorectal disease characterized by hundreds to thousands of adenomatous polyps caused by mutations in the tumor suppressor gene adenomatous polyposis coli (APC). Approximately 30% of these mutations are premature termination codons (PTC), resulting in the production of a truncated, dysfunctional APC protein. Consequently, the β-catenin degradation complex fails to form in the cytoplasm, leading to elevated nuclear levels of β-catenin and unregulated β-catenin/wnt-pathway signaling. We present in vitro and in vivo data demonstrating that

A large and pedunculated inflammatory pseudotumor with pseudosarcomatous change of the cecum mimicking a malignant polyp: a case report and literature review.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) is a rare benign tumor of unknown etiology that can occur in almost any organ system. It has neoplastic features such as local recurrence, invasive growth, and vascular invasion, leading to the possibility of malignant sarcomatous changes. The clinical presentations of colonic IPT may include abdominal pain, anemia, a palpable mass, and intestinal obstruction. A few cases of colonic IPT have been reported, but colonic IPT with pedunculated morphology is very rare. Furthermore, since it can mimic malignant polyps, understanding the endoscopic findings of colonic I

Association between Dyslipidemia and the Prevalence of Colon Polyps Based on a Health Evaluation of Subjects at a Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Colonic neoplasm is associated with western diet intake and physical inactivity. These life styles are also risk factors for dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between dyslipidemia and the prevalence of colon polyps including colon adenoma as a precancerous lesion of colonic neoplasms. METHODS: We selected subjects undergoing a colonoscopy for health screening at the Health Promotion Center of Eulji General Hospital from January 2006 to June 2010. Subjects with histories of cancers, dyslipidemia treatment, and other intestina

Rectal aberrant crypt foci (ACF) as a predictor of benign and malignant neoplastic lesions in the large intestine.

BACKGROUND: The importance of ACF is not fully explained, however, their number may be a good predictor of synchronous and metachronic adenoma or other polyps whose removal reduces the risk of CRC. Due to the epidemiological and genetic association of ACF with pre-cancer lesions, they may be a potential CRC biomarker. The aim of our study was to show that the number and type of rectal ACF may be a good predictive factor for the presence of polyps located proximally from the splenic flexure and that the type and number of ACF can correlate with the number and specific types of polyps in the lar

[Morphological studies on precancerous lesions of the stomach and large intestine].

Precancerous conditions (high cancer-risk status) in the stomach and large intestine were discussed from a histological point of view. As to the conditions for the stomach, polyps (hyperplastic polyps and atypical epithelial lesions of flatly elevated type, so-called ATP), intestinal metaplasia and chronic ulcer (including ulcer scar), and as to those for the large intestine, adenomas and mucosa with some mucous changes were selected for this study. ATP was considered to be a neoplastic lesion rather than a hyperplastic or regenerative one, appearing with a high risk for a carcinoma of well-di

Standardisation of polypectomy technique.

There are several approaches to polypectomy for sessile polyps <20 mm and for pedunculated polyps. Recent evidence is leading towards standardisation of polypectomy technique. Key recent polypectomy developments include: 1. Use of cold snare polypectomy (CSP) for sessile polyps <10 mm; 2. Use of hot snare polypectomy (HSP) following submucosal injection for sessile polyps sized 10-19 mm; 3. Piecemeal cold snare polypectomy (PCSP), with or without prior submucosal injection, for select sessile polyps sized 10-19 mm, where the potential risk for an adverse event is increased (e.g. polyps in the

[Computed tomographic aspects of intestinal intussusception].

This article describes typical CT findings of intestinal intussusception of different genesis and localisation. It is shown that a characteristic image resembling a target is obtained both in case of an invaginated Meckel's diverticulum, an idiopathic ileocolic intussusception in an infant, and in colorectal invagination in condition after resection of a polyp of the sigmoid. Compared with the conventional imaging methods such as sonography, colon contrast enema or contrast imaging of the small intestine, CT enables not only unequivocal diagnosis of intestinal invagination but frequently also
