Improved muscle and fat segmentation for body composition measures on quantitative CT.

PURPOSE: Body composition analysis on abdominal CT scans is useful for opportunistic screening. It also offers prognostic insights into mortality and cardiovascular risk. However, current segmentation methods for muscle and fat often fail on quantitative CT scans used for bone densitometry. These scans are commonly used to diagnose and monitor osteoporosis. This study aims to develop an accurate segmentation method for such scans and compare its performance with existing methods. METHODS: We applied an nnU-Net framework to segment muscle, subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, and an added 'body' cl

Effect of Lactobacillus sakei OK67 in Reducing Body and Visceral Fat in Lifestyle-Modified Overweight Individuals: A 12-Week, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial.

Obesity is a global health problem that affects the quality of life. It is a multidimensional chronic risk factor for major medical conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer. This clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of Lactobacillus sakei OK67 (DW2010), a lactic acid bacterium, in reducing body and visceral fat in overweight individuals (body mass index ≥25 kg/m2 and <30 kg/m2), aged 20-60 years. A total of 100 subjects placed in a lifestyle modification program were randomly assigned to receive either DW2010 (2.0 g/day, 1.0 × 1010 CFU) or a placebo for 12 weeks. The

Adiposity and Coagulation: Predicting Postinjury Coagulation With Advanced Imaging Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Anatomic distribution of adipose tissue has demonstrated variable associations with hypercoagulability. Utilizing a retrospective analysis of a previously enrolled prospective cohort, we assessed computed tomography (CT) scan-based anthropometric and volumetric measures of adiposity as predictors of postinjury hypercoagulability. METHODS: Segmentation analysis of arrival CT scans in significantly injured patients at a single level-I trauma center enrolled from December 2017 to August 2021 were analyzed for anthropometric indices of waist circumference (WC) and sagittal abdominal

Unraveling the Connection: Visceral Adipose Tissue and Vitamin D Levels in Obesity.

Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are widespread on a global scale, with multiple factors playing a role in their development, such as limited exposure to sunlight, inadequate dietary consumption, as well as obesity and abdominal fat accumulation. Abdominal obesity, assessed with waist circumference (WC), is associated with metabolic syndrome and has been linked to low vitamin D levels. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and vitamin D levels, particularly examining the potential threshold for vitamin D storage and sequestration using adi

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in youth with overweight or obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) has been associated with food intake and weight regulation in response to metabolic stress. In animal models, it has been noted that it may play a role in the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the leading cause of chronic liver disease in children. DESIGN: In the current study, we explored the association of circulating plasma concentrations of GDF15 with NAFLD in youth with overweight/obesity, and whether changes in plasma concentrations in GDF15 parallel the changes in intrahepatic fat content (HFF%) over time. Visceral adipose tissue quality was associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, independent of its quantity.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a serious liver disease. Recent studies have shown that both visceral adipose tissue (VAT) quantity and density (as an indirect measure of quality) are associated with metabolic profiles. Therefore, we investigated the association between VAT quantity and quality, and the prevalence and incidence of NAFLD. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this cross-sectional, retrospective cohort study, the prevalence and incidence of NAFLD were analyzed in 627 and 360 middle-aged subjects, respectively. VAT was evaluated using an unenhanced computed to

Visceral Fat Area (VFA) Superior to BMI for Predicting Postoperative Complications After Radical Gastrectomy: a Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity may impact surgical outcomes of gastrectomy. Whether visceral fat area (VFA) is a better obesity parameter than body mass index (BMI) is still controversial. The aim of this study is to compare the accuracy and effectiveness of VFA and BMI in predicting the short-term surgical outcomes of gastrectomy. METHODS: Patients who were diagnosed with gastric cancer were measured for BMI and VFA preoperatively and then divided into a VFA-H (VFA-high) group and VFA-L (VFA-low) group, at the cutoff point of 100 cm2, and a BMI-H (BMI-high) group and BMI-L (BMI-low) group, at the cutof

Impact of visceral fat volume and fat density on biochemical outcome after radical prostatectomy and postoperative radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: To assess the predictive value of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and adipose tissue density after both radical prostatectomy (RP) and adjuvant or salvage external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We randomly selected 201 patients treated with RP and EBRT between 2005 and 2015. Visceral adipose tissue and subcutaneous adipose tissue volumes were manually contoured and corresponding tissue densities in Hounsfield units (HU) calculated. Time to biochemical recurrence (BCR) was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and comparisons were made using the log-rank test. C

Relationship between epicardial fat tissue and left ventricular synchronicity: An observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Left ventricular (LV) systolic synchrony is defined as simultaneous activation of corresponding cardiac segments. Impaired synchrony has some adverse cardiovascular effects, such as LV dysfunction and impaired prognosis. Epicardial fat tissue (EFT) is visceral fat around the heart. Increased EFT thickness is associated with some disorders, such as LV dysfunction and hypertrophy, which play a role in the impairment of LV synchrony. However, the relationship between EFT and LV systolic synchrony has never been assessed. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the possible relationship between EFT

Effects of chronic treadmill training on body mass gain and visceral fat accumulation in overfed rats.

This study evaluated the effects of chronic treadmill training on body mass gain and visceral fat accumulation in overfed rats. Overfeeding was induced by reducing the litter size to 3 male pups per mother during the suckling period. The litter size of control rats was adjusted to 10 male pups per mother. Seven weeks after birth overfed and normally fed rats were selected and assigned to a sedentary protocol or to a low-intensity treadmill training protocol (60 min, 5 times/week, for 9 weeks). Four groups (overfed sedentary, N = 23; normally fed sedentary, N = 32; overfed exercised, N = 18, an

1. Fatty liver and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Although steatohepatitis can be induced by an excessive intake of alcohol, it can also arise through various other causes, in which case it is known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is classified into two categories:simple fatty liver with a favorable clinical outcome, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which is intractable and progressive. Recently in Japan, there has been an increase in the number of individuals at risk of lifestyle-related diseases, due to increased insulin resistance and visceral fat obesity. The metabolic syndrome (MS) is associated with several

Nutrition, Circadian Regulation, and the Gut-Melatonin-Visceral Adipose Tissue Axis: An Integrative Narrative Review.

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) dysfunction is a major determinant of obesity-related metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and chronic low-grade inflammation. Growing evidence indicates that VAT function is regulated by a complex interplay between nutrition, circadian rhythms, intestinal melatonin secretion, and the gut microbiota rather than by isolated metabolic pathways. The gastrointestinal tract represents an important interface between dietary exposures, microbial activity, immune signaling, and host metabolic regulation. Melatonin

DXA-Measured Visceral Adipose Tissue and Accelerated Biological Aging in Middle-Aged Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity, particularly excess visceral adipose tissue (VAT), may accelerate biological aging; however, few studies have examined this in middle-aged adults. We investigated associations between dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived VAT and two biomarkers of biological aging-phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel) and leukocyte telomere length (LTL)-in 4799 participants (2614 females, aged 45-69 years) from the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study. METHODS: Whole-body DXA (GE Lunar) quantified VAT mass. Phenotypic age was estimated from chronological age and nine biomarkers. I

Neutrophil serine proteases inhibit thermogenic capacity of visceral white adipose tissue.

Neutrophils and neutrophil-derived serine proteases (NSPs), including neutrophil elastase (NE) and proteinase 3 (PR3), are present in visceral fat of individuals and rodents with obesity, yet their roles in energy metabolism remain elusive. Here we show that neutrophil infiltration and NSP activation impair visceral fat browning in response to β-adrenergic receptor stimulation or cold exposure in male mice. Genetic deletion or local pharmacological inhibition of NE with sivelestat rescued visceral fat browning and enhanced thermogenesis. Mechanistically, NE/PR3 directly suppresses beige adipog

The Sex Dependent and Independent Effects of Dietary Whey Proteins Are Passed from the Mother to the Offspring.

SCOPE: The study assesses the metabolic impact of dietary whey proteins across generations. METHOD AND RESULTS: Virgin females are fed 20% energy whey proteins with 70% energy carbohydrates, which reduces body weight gain and visceral adipose compared to controls fed dietary casein. In contrast, the males are unresponsive. The effect is accentuated in reproductive females that also have reduced plasma levels of glucose. The responsive females have increased cecal levels of pyruvic and lactic acid, suggesting a greater catabolism of carbohydrates in the gut. While the male and female offspring

Muscle and visceral fat infiltration: A potential mechanism to explain the worsening of obstructive sleep apnea with age.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Aging is a major risk factor for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and is associated with increased upper airway collapsibility, but the mechanisms are largely unknown. We hypothesized that the increase in OSA severity and upper airway collapsibility with age are partially mediated by upper airway, visceral and muscle fat infiltration. METHODS: Male subjects underwent full polysomnography, upper airway collapsibility determination (Pcrit) after sleep induction with midazolam, upper airway and abdominal computed tomography. Tongue and abdominal muscle fat infiltration were asses

The association of pericardial fat and peri-aortic fat with severity of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is associated with central obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. However, the association of body-site specific adiposity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not been well characterized. We studies 704 consecutive subjects who underwent annual health survey in Taiwan. All subjects have been divided into three groups including normal (341), mild (227) and moderate and severe (136) NAFLD according to ultrasound finding. Pericardial (PCF) and thoracic peri-aortic adipose tissue (TAT) burden was assessed using a non-contrast 16-slice multi-

Assessing the utility of cardiorespiratory fitness, visceral fat, and liver fat in predicting changes in insulin sensitivity beyond simple changes in body weight after exercise training in adolescents.

To examine the utility of changes in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and body composition in response to exercise training in adolescents with obesity beyond simple measures of body weight change. This is a secondary analysis of our previously published randomized trials of aerobic, resistance, and combined training. We included 104 adolescents (body mass index (BMI) ≥85th percentile) who had complete baseline and post-intervention data for CRF, regional body fat, insulin sensitivity, and oral glucose tolerance. Associations between changes in body composition and CRF with cardiometabolic vari
