The diagnostic value of skin tests was assessed in 35 patients affected by bird breeder's disease by comparing the results with those obtained in a group of 27 symptomless breeders and 10 symptomless unexposed individuals. Sterilised and diluted serum and lyophilised extracts of faeces prepared from the breeder's own birds were injected intradermally. BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine is rare in children. The usefulness of different diagnostic tests for allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to describe a case series of children with hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine and to compare the results of different diagnostic tests.
PATIENTS: Nine children with hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine were included. Only six of these children and their parents consented to a comprehensive allergy assessment, which included the prick test, intradermal test, patch test, and repeated open application test (ROAT).

T-cell function was evaluated in 29 patients with either hepatointestinal or hepatosplenic schistosomiasis by intradermal tests to recall antigens. Immunodepression was detected in 26% of the subjects with hepatointestinal schistosomiasis and in 50% of those with the hepatosplenic form. Cellular immunodepression was related to worm load and spleen size. This non specific T-cell immunodepression may represent a serious constraint to the elimination of intracellular pathogens both in hepatosplenic or hepatointestinal schistosomiasis.

Six patients who developed urticaria, dyspnea, and anaphylactic shock due to topical application of chlorhexidine gluconate solution are described. Chlorhexidine gluconate was confirmed as the causative agent of type I hypersensitivity by intradermal, scratch, and epicutaneous tests. To prevent life-threatening adverse reactions, it seems important to use chlorhexidine gluconate on wound surfaces at a concentration of 0.05%, as recommended by the manufacturer; chlorhexidine gluconate may not be suitable for application to mucous membranes.

One hundred and sixty seven volunteer medical students were exposed to intradermal skin tests for schistosomiasis. 35(21%) were positive. On further screening using routine stool and urine examinations, only 11(6.6%) were found to have eggs of Schistosoma mansoni. We conclude that although a useful procedure, schistosomal skin test should not be used alone for the diagnosis of schistosoma infections but should be complimented with the routine stool and urine examinations.
