[Disseminated varicella-zoster virus infection without vesicles in a patient with malignant lymphoma].

A 76-year-old man was diagnosed as having malignant lymphoma (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, diffuse medium cell-sized, B cell type). He was treated with CHOP therapy but with no response. In the terminal stage, he had continuous high temperature despite the administration of anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agents. Paralytic ileus, liver and pancreas dysfunction, and gastrointestinal bleeding developed. No skin eruptions occurred throughout the clinical course. He died on day 36 of treatment. Postmortem examination revealed foci of hemorrhagic necrosis containing many multinuclear giant-cells some of

Viral diseases involving the liver.

Even though HAV, HBV and HNANB viruses are responsible for most of the viral hepatitis cases, many other viruses have been reported to cause hepatic injury. These viruses may involve the liver, either as part of a systemic illness (e.g. EBV, CMV, HSV) or as the primary target organ (e.g. yellow fever virus, Lassa fever virus, Ebola virus). Clinically overt hepatocellular dysfunction is rare in such viral infections. Biochemical disturbance of hepatic functions shown, for example, by rises in AST and ALT, is a frequent event and indicates hepatic damage. Morphological changes of the liver inclu

The fluorescent antibody technique in the diagnosis of equine rhinopneumonitis virus abortion.

Using two known positive equine viral rhinopneumonitis (EVR) sera, conjugates were prepared with fluorescein isothiocyanate and tested for specificity using EVR infected tissue culture cells. The conjugate was then applied to selected tissues from 32 aborted fetuses and foals submitted during a natural outbreak of EVR. Antigen was detected in various tissues by immunofluorescence in 20 cases (62.5%). In 24 cases bovine fetal kidney cell monolayers were inoculated with a pool of lung and liver and EVR virus was isolated from 15 (62.5%). Histological examination of various tissues from 29 cases

Autonomic dysfunction-dominant phenotype in a Chinese family with biallelic GGC repeat expansions in NOTCH2NLC.

The GGC repeat expansions in the NOTCH2NLC gene are associated with multiple neurodegenerative disorders. Herein, we report the clinical phenotype in a family with biallelic GGC expansions in NOTCH2NLC. Autonomic dysfunction was a prominent clinical manifestation in three genetically confirmed patients without dementia, parkinsonism, and cerebellar ataxia for > 12 years. A 7-T brain magnetic resonance imaging in two patients revealed a change in the small cerebral veins. The biallelic GGC repeat expansions may not modify the disease progression in neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease. Auton

Prevalence of Fragile X-Associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome in Patients with Cerebellar Ataxia in Japan.

The presence of fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) premutation has been linked to patients with a certain type of cerebellar ataxia, the fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). However, its prevalence in Japan has yet to be clarified. The aim of the present study is to determine the prevalence of FXTAS in Japanese patients with cerebellar ataxia and to describe their clinical characteristics. DNA samples were collected from 1328 Japanese patients with cerebellar ataxia, referred for genetic diagnosis. Among them, 995 patients with negative results for the most common spinocereb

Ubiquitin-positive tau-negative intraneuronal inclusions in dementia with motor neuron disease: The 50th Anniversary of Japanese Society of Neuropathology.

We first reported ubiquitin-positive tau-negative intraneuronal inclusions in the hippocampal granular cell layer and entorhinal cortices in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We then found that those inclusions occur frequently in patients with presenile dementia and motor neuron disease. The ultrastructure of the inclusions consists mainly of granules with a few filaments. In 2006, TDP-43 was identified as a major component of the inclusions specific for frontotemporal lobar degeneration and ALS. Here, we review the current knowledge regarding ubiquitin-positive tau-negative

[Clinico-pathological investigation of two patients with dementia with motor neuron disease].

Dementia with motor neuron disease (D-MND) is characterized clinically by frontal and neurological signs, and pathologically by localized atrophy of the fronto-temporal lobes and neuronal ubiquitin(Ub)-positive inclusions. In this study, we compared the clinico-pathological findings of two patients with D-MND. Case 1 (55-year-old male): At the age of 51, he developed personality change and disinhibition, lacking neurological signs. Brain MRI exhibited localized atrophy of the frontal lobes. At the age of 54, he showed dysphagia and died after a disease duration of 4 years. Neuropathologically,

A comparative clinical, pathological, biochemical and genetic study of fused in sarcoma proteinopathies.

Neuronal intermediate filament inclusion disease and atypical frontotemporal lobar degeneration are rare diseases characterized by ubiquitin-positive inclusions lacking transactive response DNA-binding protein-43 and tau. Recently, mutations in the fused in sarcoma gene have been shown to cause familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and fused in sarcoma-positive neuronal inclusions have subsequently been demonstrated in neuronal intermediate filament inclusion disease and atypical frontotemporal lobar degeneration with ubiquitinated inclusions. Here we provide clinical, imaging, morphological

Interferon β induces clearance of mutant ataxin 7 and improves locomotion in SCA7 knock-in mice.

We showed previously, in a cell model of spinocerebellar ataxia 7, that interferon beta induces the expression of PML protein and the formation of PML protein nuclear bodies that degrade mutant ataxin 7, suggesting that the cytokine, used to treat multiple sclerosis, might have therapeutic value in spinocerebellar ataxia 7. We now show that interferon beta also induces PML-dependent clearance of ataxin 7 in a preclinical model, SCA7(266Q/5Q) knock-in mice, and improves motor function. Interestingly, the presence of mutant ataxin 7 in the mice induces itself the expression of endogenous interfe

Clear-cell meningioma: An uncommon aggressive variant of meningioma.

BACKGROUND: Clear-cell meningioma is a rare subtype, representing 0.2-0.8% of all meningiomas. It is classified as grade 2 according to World Health Organization (WHO) classification due to its aggressive clinical course. Morphologically, it can mimic other clear-cell tumors arising in the central nervous system, each having different clinical behavior, therapeutic protocol, and prognostic outcome. AIM: This study aims to describe clinicopathological characteristics of clear-cell meningioma and to discuss the histomorphological features and differential diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The

BK virus-associated nephropathy with hydronephrosis in a patient with AIDS: a case report and literature review.

BK virus is ubiquitous worldwide, with infection usually occurring in early childhood. BK virus replicates prolifically under immunosuppressive conditions, causing inflammation along the genitourinary tract and progressing clinically to hemorrhagic cystitis, ureteral stenosis, and tubulointerstitial nephritis. Most BK virusassociated nephropathy occurs in renal allograft patients after kidney transplantation, although some case reports have described BK virus-associated nephropathy in the native kidney, particularly in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. Here we present the c

Emergence of fowl aviadenovirus C-4 in a backyard chicken flock in California.

Fowl aviadenovirus (FAdV) species D and E are associated with inclusion body hepatitis (IBH); species C, serotype 4 (hereafter, FAdV4) is associated with hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (HHS) in young chickens. Outbreaks of HHS have led to significant losses in the poultry industry in several countries, predominantly in China. In April 2020, FAdV4 was detected in a remote backyard flock in California. In a mixed flock of chickens of various breeds and ages (6 mo to 2 y old), 7 of 30 were found dead within a week without premonitory signs. One additional bird died after the flock was reloca

Neoplasms and novel gammaherpesviruses in critically endangered captive European minks (Mustela lutreola).

The European mink (Mustela lutreola) is a riparian mustelid, considered one of the most endangered carnivores in the world. Alpha, beta and gammaherpesviruses described in mustelids have been occasionally associated with different pathological processes. However, there is no information about the herpesviruses species infecting European minks. In this study, 141 samples of swabs (oral, conjunctival, anal), faeces and tissues from 23 animals were analysed for herpesvirus (HV) using a pan-HV-PCR assay. Two different, potentially novel, gammaherpesvirus species were identified in 12 samples from

IDENTIFICATION AND CORRELATION OF A NOVEL SIADENOVIRUS IN A FLOCK OF BUDGERIGARS (MELOPSITTACUS UNDULATES) INFECTED WITH SALMONELLA TYPHIMURIUM IN THE UNITED STATES.

A flock of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates) was purchased from a licensed breeder and quarantined at a zoologic facility within the United States in 2016. Following 82 deaths within the flock, the remaining 66 birds were depopulated because of ongoing clinical salmonellosis despite treatment. Gross necropsy was performed on all 66 birds. Histopathologic examination was performed on 10 birds identified with gross lesions and 10 birds without. Pathologic findings were most often observed in the liver, kidney, and spleen. Lesions noted in the livers and spleens were consistent with published

Clinical and pathological findings of a newly recognized disease of elephants caused by endotheliotropic herpesviruses.

The unique clinical and pathological findings in nine Asian (Elephas maximus) and two African (Loxodonta africana) elephants from North American Zoos with a highly fatal disease caused by novel endotheliotropic herpesviruses are described. Identification of the viruses by molecular techniques and some epidemiological aspects of the disease were previously reported. Consensus primer polymerase chain reaction (PCR) combined with sequencing yielded molecular evidence that confirmed the presence of two novel but related herpesviruses associated with the disease, one in Asian elephants and the seco

Neurofilament inclusion body disease with early onset frontotemporal dementia and primary lateral sclerosis.

A small number of patients have recently been described with a sporadic neurodegenerative disease, associated with the neuropathological finding of neurofilament-immunoreactive neuronal inclusions. The clinical and pathological spectrum of this new disease entity has yet to be fully defined. We describe an additional case of "neurofilament inclusion body disease" (NIBD) with several unusual features. This young woman, who suffered from rapidly progressive frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and features of primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), died at age 29. Neuropathological examination disclosed numer

Inhibition of Myostatin Reduces Collagen Deposition in a Mouse Model of Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy (OPMD) With Established Disease.

BACKGROUND: Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) is a late-onset muscle disease presented by ptosis, dysphagia, and limb weakness. Affected muscles display increased fibrosis and atrophy, with characteristic inclusion bodies in the nucleus. Myostatin is a negative regulator of muscle mass, and inhibition of myostatin has been demonstrated to improve symptoms in models of muscular dystrophy. METHODS: We systemically administered a monoclonal antibody to block myostatin in the A17 mouse model of OPMD at 42 weeks of age. The mice were administered a weekly dose of 10 mg/kg RK35 intraperiton

NOTCH2NLC GGC intermediate repeat with serine induces hypermyelination and early Parkinson's disease-like phenotypes in mice.

BACKGROUND: The expansion of GGC repeats (typically exceeding 60 repeats) in the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of the NOTCH2NLC gene (N2C) is linked to N2C-related repeat expansion disorders (NREDs), such as neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), essential tremor (ET), and Parkinson's disease (PD). These disorders share common clinical manifestations, including parkinsonism, dementia, seizures, and muscle weakness. Intermediate repeat sizes ranging from 40 to 60 GGC repeats, particularly those with AGC-encoded serine insertions, have been reported to be a

Aluminium co-localises with Biondi ring tangles in Parkinson's disease and epilepsy.

Aluminium is known to accumulate in neuropathological hallmarks. However, such has only tentatively been suggested in Biondi ring tangles. Owing to their intracellular and filamentous structure rich in β-pleated sheets, Biondi ring tangles might attract the adventitious binding of aluminium in regions of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier. The study's objective was to establish whether aluminium co-localises with Biondi ring tangles in the brains of Parkinson's disease donors versus a donor that went on to develop late-onset epilepsy. Herein, we have performed immunohistochemistry for phosp
